Degree awarded December 2014 ii © 2014 Kristin Joy Wilkes iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Kristin Joy Wilkes Doctor of Philosophy Department of English December 2014 Title: God and the Novel: Religion and Secularization in Antebellum American Fiction My dissertation argues that the study of antebellum American religious novels is hindered by the secularization narrative, the widely held conviction that modernity entails the decline of religion. Because this narrative has been refuted by the growing field of secularization theory and because the novel is associated with modernity, the novel form must be reexamined. Specifically, I challenge the common definition of the novel as a secular form. By investigating novels by Lydia Maria Child, Susan Warner, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Hannah Bond, I show that religion and the novel form are not opposed. In fact, scholars’ unexamined and unacknowledged definitions of religion and secularity cause imprecision. For example, the Marxist definition of religion as ideology causes misrepresentations of novels with evangelical purposes, such as Warner’s The Wide, Wide World and Bond’s The Bondwoman’s Narrative. Both novels feature protagonists who submit—one to patriarchy and the other to slavery—a stance that appears masochistic to feminist scholars and critics of slave narratives, respectively. However, attending to the biblical allusions, divine interventions, and theological arguments that saturate these texts places them in another framework altogether and reveals that they are commenting not on one’s relationship with other humans but with God. iv Likewise, unexamined definitions of the secular are problematic because critics often conflate two definitions: the etymological sense of “earthly” and the modern sense of “anti-religious.” This slippage underlies the view that religious literature of the nineteenth century became less religious, when it simply became more grounded in daily life. Therefore, to label as “secular” an author like Stowe, who promoted an earthly, lived Christianity, is only accurate if one means “mundane.” Finally, my dissertation demonstrates that literary criticism itself relies on the secularization narrative, perceiving itself as modern and progressive. This reliance obscures the role literature has played in constructing this narrative. For example, colonial novels like Hobomok and The Scarlet Letter rewrite American religious history to exclude Calvinism. She married at age 19 and defined herself primarily as a wife and mother for the next 20 years. Inspired by Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique, Nelson returned to college in the mid-1960s and began to participate in the radical political movements of that decade. She graduated from the University of Akron with a B.A. in 1966 and an M.A. in Social Psychology in 1968. She was awarded a Ph.D. in Sociology from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1976, having completed a dissertation which examined the National Woman’s Party, and was instrumental in the founding of Women’s Studies at both SUNY-Buffalo and at Antioch College in Ohio. Nelson has been involved in peace, civil rights, feminist, and lesbian activism; her most notable political activities include lobbying for the ERA in Congress, organizing to free Joann Little and the Wilmington Ten, and co-founding the Women’s Building in San Francisco. Her articles and essays have appeared in a wide variety of feminist publications including Sinister Wisdom, Sojourner, Off Our Backs, and many others. Since the 1980s Nelson has lived in San Francisco where she works as a feminist therapist and a lesbian feminist activist.

Shaw This research summarizes the cumulative efforts of in-depth research, extensive participant observation, and archival analysis focused on Southern Oregon lesbian lands. This community of womyn has persisted in rural Southern Oregon for nearly 30 years. The intention of this study is to examine both the accumulation of knowledge of issues pertaining to the maintenance of "womyn-centered" spaces as well as the future of both the lands and the visions they embody. While most participants believe in the importance of perpetuating the vision of lesbian lands, they are experiencing difficulties in finding new residents. As womyn on rural lands in Southern Oregon discuss the success and challenges, the value of ensuring the future becomes evident. Documenting these rich experiences provides a foundation for womyn seeking alternatives to patriarchy. Thus, womyn on land are interested in sharing their vision with future generations of womyn. Holmes 2010 Abstract This dissertation considers the state of environmentalism in feminist studies in the American academy. I propose that ecofeminism, the branch of feminist philosophy that concerns itself with environmentalism, is limited by disciplinary divides and geographical exclusions that appear in its historiography—these limit what counts as ecofeminism as well as what it could be. “Ecofeminism” describes many things, including how the domination of women may be linked to the domination of nature and an examination of women’s environmental activism. While ecofeminist theories criticize the historically negative image of women and nature that exists in patriarchal cultures that measure nature by its market value, ecofeminism also posits a positive identification of women with nature. Some point to women’s greater contact with the environment through farming and conservation, reproduction and care work, or a spiritual connection with “mother nature” to describe woman-nature identifications and argue that women are well-positioned to protect nature. Though ecofeminist theory is useful for understanding the nature of oppression and strategies for resistance, it has also been marginalized in feminist studies due to criticisms of gender essentialism. It has also been marginalized because of its exclusions, including what appears to be a white, middle-class bias.
