Your grace in my life is astounding, may you be glorified. iv Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to establish the meaning and definition of postfeminism along with an assessment of whether it accurately represents the current era of thinking. It is an historical, descriptive, qualitative analysis of the feminist movement from its inception with the central focus on the newest strand of feminist thought, postfeminism. The progression toward these conclusions entails an outlining of the waves of feminism and the strands of thought within these eras as well as a discussion of third wave feminism, modern feminism and generational differences between the waves. The focus on postfeminism begins with an exploration of the meaning of “post” as well as a look at postfeminism’s strong ties to popular culture and the theoretical underpinnings of this concept. The postfeminist issues of victimhood, work, femininity, sexuality, marriage, men, family and generational collaboration are reviewed in order to determine the definition of postfeminism, assess whether the current era is postfeminist, consider if postfeminism is anti-feminism and measure postfeminism as it relates to the third wave. What is most interesting about this, however, is not the longevity of its tenets, but rather the constantly changing nature and face of feminism itself. There is not a comprehensive definition for the term partly because of varied meanings but also because such a venture has been avoided. Nonetheless, feminism in the twentieth century has given way to discussions of postfeminism for many different reasons. It is the intent of this dissertation to discuss and trace feminism in broad terms to assess and make sense of the elusive and confusing references to postfeminism which dot an ever-increasing volume of feminist literature. It is necessary to discuss the eras of feminism to assess whether there is indeed a new era and whether this era is postfeminist. Feminism as a movement has seemingly ‘stalled’ in recent decades in that it appears to be neither widely recognized nor relevant to the average American woman.1 While American women enjoy many of the hard-won victories of feminism such as improved wages and hiring practices, there is arguably little now that appeals widely to women who are busy climbing corporate ladders or raising families or both. In addition, the term postfeminism, which was originally invented by pop culture media, has now begun to creep into feminist literature with none too hearty an acceptance. The most interesting aspect of this emergence is that it appears to be unaccompanied by self- proclaimed postfeminist writers. The vague, confusing and at times contradicting uses of 1 This is evidenced by several indicators which will be discussed at a later point. A striking example is the existence of a “no,…but” feminism which will also be discussed in later chapters. 1 the term postfeminism in pop culture melded with its sketchy introduction into academia has further ensured that postfeminism remains undefined even to those who reference it. It is this gaping hole in feminist thought that this dissertation seeks to fill. The study of postfeminism is vital to an understanding of the modern American political landscape yet it is not without roadblocks not only because of the difficulty in definition, but also because of the heated conversation currently surrounding the idea. This dissertation will be an historical, descriptive, qualitative analysis of the feminist movement from its inception with the inclusion of the splits typical of social movements.

By the mid-1930s, a group of distinctly Western Australian writers was emerging, dedicated to their own writing careers and the promotion of Australian literature. In 1938, they founded the Western Australian Section of the Fellowship of Australian Writers. This first detailed study of the activities of the Fellowship in Western Australia explores its contribution to the development of Australian literature in this State between 1938 and 1980. In particular, this analysis identifies the degree to which the Fellowship supported and encouraged individual writers, promoted and celebrated Australian writers and their works, through publications, readings, talks and other activities, and assesses the success of its advocacy for writers’ professional interests. Information came from the organisation’s archives for this period; the personal papers, biographies, autobiographies and writings of writers involved; general histories of Australian literature and cultural life; and interviews with current members of the Fellowship in Western Australia. These sources showed the early writers utilising the networks they developed within a small, isolated society to build a creative community, which welcomed artists and musicians as well as writers. The Fellowship lobbied for a wide raft of conditions that concerned writers, including free children’s libraries, better rates of payment and the establishment of the Australian Society of Authors.

Female interpersonal relationships are complex – women often work to motivate, encourage and transform one another but can just as easily use tactics like intimidation, manipulation, and exploitation in order to save their own jobs and reputations.     JUDITH LORBER The Variety of Feminisms and their Contribution to Gender Equality Introduction My focus is the continuities and discontinuities in recent feminist ideas and perspectives. I am going to discuss the development of feminist theories as to the sources of gender inequality and its pervasiveness, and the different feminist political solutions and remedies based on these theories. I will be combining ideas from different feminist writers, and usually will not be talking about any specific writers. A list of readings can be found at the end. Each perspective has made important contributions to improving women's status, but each also has limitations. Feminist ideas of the past 35 years changed as the limitations of one set of ideas were critiqued and addressed by what was felt to be a better set of ideas about why women and men were so unequal. It has not been a clear progression by any means, because many of the debates went on at the same time. As a matter of fact, they are still going on. And because all of the feminist perspectives have insight into the problems of gender inequality, and all have come up with good strategies for remedying these problems, all the feminisms are still very much with us. Thus, there are continuities and convergences, as well as sharp debates, among the different feminisms. Any one feminist may incorporate ideas from several perspec- tives, and many feminists have shifted their perspectives over the years. I myself was originally a liberal feminist, then a so- 8 JUDITH LORBER cialist feminist, and now consider myself to be primarily a so- cial construction feminist, with overtones of postmodernism and queer theory.

Yet fascinating discussions around gender and sexuality were also happening in the early- and mid- 1970’s, ones that illuminate not only the evolution of movements and ideas during these decades, but also our own historical moment. This paper, which relies on primary sources, situates questions of sexual object choice, gender non-conformity, racialization, and “bisexuality” in the historical moment(s) of the 1970’s. These histories also have important connections to the contemporary moment of LGBT identities. I argue that today both bisexuality and transgender, while certainly acknowledged as labels that fit with lesbian and gay in a certain sense, are treated discursively and materially differently than the latter two, so often violently. For this reason, the last section of my paper draws connections between the 1970’s and the present. A fresh perspective from the (alleged) margins What is work? The question chosen as a title for this volume is an ambi- tious one. We are obviously aware that a huge body of literature on work exists, and we certainly do not pretend we can give a defi nite answer to the question,1 which may not even be possible.2 Instead, we will use this question as a tool to interrogate history, the social sciences, and also pol- itics. Such a question prompts us in fact to adopt a critical and diversifi ed view of work and, consequently, of economic and social policies, too. On the other hand, establishing the boundaries, implications, and stakes of a new characterization of work is a crucial issue in the contemporary de- bate, and is obviously also motivated by the ongoing dramatic economic, technological, organizational, social, and cultural changes affecting the world of work. Let us start with a telling example. “Italy is a Democratic Republic, founded on work,” article 1 of the Italian Constitution, written after the Second World War and enforced in 1948, authoritatively states3: this implied and still implies a kind of overlap between enjoying citizenship and working. When the Italian Constitution was enforced, according to the Italian population censuses as many as three-quarters of adult Italian women were not working or, more precisely, were economically “inac- tive.” What did they do?
