GOV 1029 Feminist Political Thought TIMES TO BE CONFIRMED: provisionally, Tuesday 1:30-2:45, Thursday TBC Fall Semester 2020 Professor Katrina Forrester Office Hours: TBC E-mail: [email protected] Teaching Fellows: Celia Eckert, Soren Dudley, Kierstan Carter, Eve O’Connor Course Description: What is feminism? What is patriarchy? What and who is a woman? How does gender relate to sexuality, and to class and race? Should housework be waged, should sex be for sale, and should feminists trust the state? This course is an introduction to feminist political thought since the mid-twentieth century. It introduces students to classic texts of late twentieth-century feminism, explores the key arguments that have preoccupied radical, socialist, liberal, Black, postcolonial and queer feminists, examines how these arguments have changed over time, and asks how debates about equality, work, and identity matter today. We will proceed chronologically, reading texts mostly written during feminism’s so-called ‘second wave’, by a range of influential thinkers including Simone de Beauvoir, Shulamith Firestone, bell hooks and Catharine MacKinnon. We will examine how feminists theorized patriarchy, capitalism, labor, property and the state; the relationship of claims of sex, gender, race, and class; the development of contemporary ideas about sexuality, identity, and gender; and how and whether these ideas change how fundamental problems in political theory are understood. 1 Course Requirements: Undergraduate students: 1. Participation (25%): a. Class Participation (15%) Class Participation is an essential part of making a section work. Participation means more than just attendance. Remarks by Redstockings speaker Marisa Figueiredo Shulamith Firestone Memorial September 23, 2012 In 1978, at the age of 16, while In high school, I lived in Akron, Ohio. I went to to the public library on weekends and on one shelf were three books in a row that changed my life forever and are the reason I am here today: Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex, Shulamith Firestone's The Dialectic of Sex The Case for Feminist Revolution, and Redstockings' Feminist Revolution. With my consciousness raised to the point of passionately identifying myself as a radical feminist in the tradition each book represented, I ardently wanted to connect with Shulamith Firestone and Redstockings , so I wrote to both. I heard back from Redstockings, not Shulamith, and since 1984, I have been active in Redstockings. On May Day in 1986, Redstockings organized a Memorial for Simone de Beauvoir and I felt deeply honored when asked by Kathie Sarachild to read Shulamith's Firestone's tribute she had sent to the Memorial. It was several sentences in Shulamith's beautiful handwriting saying that Simone de Beauvoir had fired her youthful ambitions at age 16 and my heart was pounding as I read it, because Shulamith had fired my youthful ambitions at age 16, too! In the early 1990s, Kathie Sarachild introduced me to Shulamith Firestone, and I remember immediately feeling Shulamith's intensity of observation and perception of details unnoticed by others. All this despite her physical vulnerability that overwhelmed me, which I soon learned from her, resulted from side effects of her medication and a recent hospitalization. -

THE UNHAPPY MARRIAGE OF MARXISM AND FEMINISM TOWARDS A MORE PROGRESSIVE UNION Heidi I . Hartmann This paper argues that the relation between marxism and feminism has, in all the forms it has so far taken, been an unequal one . While both marxist method and feminist analysis are necessary to an understanding of capi- talist societies, and of the position of women within them, in fact femi- nism has consistently been subordinated . The paper presents a challenge to both marxist and radical feminist work on the "woman question", and argues that what it is necessary to analyse is the combination of patriarchy and capitalism . It is a paper which, we hope, should stimulate considerable debate . The 'marriage' of marxism and feminism has been like the marriage of husband and wife depicted in English common law : marxism and feminism are one, and that one is marxism (1). Recent attempts to integrate marxism and feminism are unsatisfactory to us as feminists because they subsume the feminist struggle into the 'larger' struggle against capital . To continue our simile further, either we need a healthier marriage or we need a divorce . The inequalities in this marriage, like most social phenomena, are no accident . Many marxists typically argue that feminism is at best less impor- tant than class conflict and at worst divisive of the working class . This political stance produces an analysis that absorbs feminism into the class struggle . Moreover, the analytic power of marxism with respect to capital has obscured its limitations with respect to sexism . We will argue here that while marxist analysis provides essential insight into the laws of historical development, and those of capital in particular, the categories of marxism are sex-blind . -

From 1991 until 1996, the state and civil society signed a series of Peace Accords that promised to better meet the needs of the Maya, Xinka, Garífuna and non-Indigenous groups living there. In this context, how does the current educational system meet the varied needs of these groups? My research investigates the philosophy and praxis of Maya Indigenous knowledge (MIK) in broadly defined educational contexts through the stories of 17 diverse Maya professional women and men involved in educational reform that currently live and work in Guatemala City. How do they reclaim and apply their ancestral knowledge daily? What possible applications of MIK can transform society? The findings reveal that MIK promotes social change and healing within and outside institutionalized educational spaces and argues that academia needs to make room for Indigenous theorizing mainly in areas of education, gender, knowledge production, and nation building. I analyze these areas from anticolonial and critical Indigenous standpoints from which gender and Indigenous identities weave through the text. -

A Chingona in this newly reclaimed use means a woman who embodies confidence, acceptance of self, reclamation of sexuality, siguiendo le adelante por su propio camino sin importarle lo que digan los demás, rejects social and cultural norms/expectations of women, and uses her strengths to empower and uplift others. Through the reclamation of this identity, these mujeres are moving beyond being hijas de la chingada to being Chingonas. This research showcases the Chingona identity through interviews and photo elicitation with nine participants to get an in-depth view of how participants make sense of their identity. This research highlights the reasons why this identity is being claimed, what it takes to be a Chingona, and the challenges faced when claiming this identity. Participants navigate the multiple identities and cultures they hold through the creation of their Chingona identity, and are able to break past challenges, barriers, norms, and expectations. Through this identity, Chingonas are being empowered to be the best version of themselves, are supporting and uplifting each other, and serving as role models for their community. -
Libertarianism, Feminism, and Nonviolent Action: a Synthesis
LIBERTARIAN PAPERS VOL. 4, NO. 2 (2012) LIBERTARIANISM, FEMINISM, AND NONVIOLENT ACTION: A SYNTHESIS GRANT BABCOCK* I. Introduction MURRAY ROTHBARD’S CONTRIBUTION to libertarian ethics was to outline a theory prohibiting aggressive violence (1978, p. 27-30). The influence of Rothbard’s ethics,1 combined with a decades-long political alliance with conservatives based on anticommunism, has produced a debate within libertarian circles about whether libertarians qua libertarians must take positions against certain forms of repression that do not involve aggressive violence. The non-aggression principle is as good a libertarian litmus test as has been suggested. Often, the voices who levy allegations of non-aggressive (or at least not exclusively aggressive) oppression come from the political left, and have un-libertarian (read: aggressive) solutions in mind, even if they do not conceive of those solutions as violent. Despite these considerations, I do believe that libertarians qua libertarians are obligated to say something about the kind of non-aggressive oppression that these voices from the left have raised regarding issues including, but not limited to, race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. Chicana Feminist Critical Analysis in the Twenty-First Century Ellie D
The FutuRE PERfect: Chicana Feminist Critical Analysis in the Twenty-first Century Ellie D. Hernández This essay reviews Chicana feminist criticism at the millennial turn. Using an interdisciplinary and cultural studies analysis, the essay addresses changes in the historical, material, and social development of knowledge production by Chicanas over the last few decades leading up to the new century. Set within the grammatical of a “future perfect,” the essay also takes aim at the antiessentialist and antiutopian academy as it moves into a global and transnational frame. Chicanas have situated their analysis in cultural studies because of its interdisciplinary framing and intersectional concerns with feminist studies. Chicanas have developed a prodigious feminist approach that incorporates many unique elements that resist both the nationalist and foundationalist claims made by Chicanos and American feminists during the 1960s and 1970s. This essay also utilizes a polemical style that is provocative and features some insights into the location of Chicana feminist critical analysis. [Key words: Chicana/o studies, feminist theory, feminist criticism, cultural studies, feminist critical analysis] Chicana feminism derives its interdisciplinary framing of critical analysis from activist, academic, and sociopolitical practices. Among the myriad of dispositions is a general response to systemic exclusion, silence, and divisive institutional politics (Alarcón 1989a/b; González 1997; Pérez 1999; Segura 1993, 1994). And while the last forty years have seen the elaboration of the field of feminist studies with a list of major publications and changes in pedagogical practices, Chicana feminist critical analysis has been widely recognized in other venues, such as contemporary leftist theory, cultural studies, sexuality studies, and queer studies.
