Say What? 18 EAGLE NAVIGATOR 2015-2016

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Shanghai American School Community,

Claire and I would like to extend a warm welcome to both new and returning families. We hope you had a chance for good family time this summer. We ourselves were fortunate to spend time with our two sons and their families in Colorado and San Francisco. We enjoyed time with our five grandchildren especially our two newest granddaughters – Allison and Gillian – born just this past May. This issue of the Navigator is designed to provide useful information to help you settle into the SAS community. Let me make a few suggestions for both new and returning members. I hope you will: • Learn about our approach to education and why we offer the programs we do. Our professional educators are experienced and hold high standards. Feel free to ask them why we do what we do. Take advantage of opportunities to attend meetings with faculty, principals and visiting speakers. • Learn about our Mission Statement and Core Values. They will give you insight into who we are and what we value. Read our Themes and Priorities document on pages 5 to understand some of our priorities as a school in the coming years. It will help to explain our focus on Build- ing Educational Excellence, Building Our Community and Building Our Future. • Learn who does what. SAS is a large school. This year we are including a document as an aid to understand where to go to ask questions. This has been included on pages 14 and 15. • Develop your “cross-cultural understanding” skills. Learn about Chinese culture, history, eco- nomics, and the city in which we live. Spend some time studying (Puton- ghua – the common language) and make sure you learn the correct pronunciation of Chinese names and key words. Travel within to appreciate the many differences among the regions of the country. • Be gentle on yourself as you settle into a new environment. It takes time to learn your way around and feel comfortable. The rewards ultimately will justify the effort.

Lastly, and importantly, please take to heart the important advice of Professor Roland Barthes, a noted educator, about the importance of adults working well together and how such collaboration can be a critical component of a constructive atmosphere for student learning: “The nature of relationships among the adults within a school has a greater influence on the character and quality of that school and on student accomplishment than anything else.” Claire and I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming weeks and sharing the rich experiences offered by our community and the city in which we live.

Warm regards,

Richard W. Mueller Head of School Shanghai American School
