EAGLE NAVIGATOR AMERICAN SCHOOL 2016-2017

EAGLE NAVIGATOR 2016-2017

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Community,

Welcome to SAS! We are excited that you are a part of our school community!

The Eagle Navigator is meant to serve as a quick reference when you have questions about school policy, school leadership, or simply whom to contact with an issue or need. If you are new to SAS, please take the time to page through it carefully. We have worked to keep the Eagle Navigator focused and concise for ease of use.

I do have some requests:

Participate in school life! One hallmark of an American-style education is the variety of events in which students and parents can participate. Performances, athletic contests, events hosted by our PTSA—all of these help create a sense of community and belonging, but only if we come together to either help out or simply enjoy the moment.

Follow school communications. We work hard to communicate regularly and clearly. Please keep informed by reading the weekly “A Look Ahead” from our Communications office as well as communications from academic leaders in the division in which your child is enrolled.

Guard your school ID. We work very hard to create both a welcoming and a safe environment for our community. The school ID is the way we know you are a part of our school. Guard it with care and have it replaced quickly if it is lost.

Support the SAS PTSA! Our parent leaders work hard to plan or support school events, raise money to support school en- deavors, and build a bridge between parents and school leaders. They also hold monthly meetings to provide information and programs important to parents. Please seek to support the PTSA events and play a role in our school community!

Ask! Don’t guess. There will be times when you will not understand a choice made by the School or you will simply wish to learn more about an aspect of your child’s education or school life. Please reach out to school leadership to know the facts. Miscommunication or misunderstanding can be avoided in this way.

Revel in our diversity! SAS is a school which supports many different nationalities, hopes and dreams. We honor and celebrate that fact and hope you will too.

Become familiar with our Mission and Core Values. We are a school that is mission-inspired. We honor a set of values and expectations that underlie all that we do at the School. Become familiar with them and celebrate them with us.

Know that as a non-profit institution—rare in Shanghai—we commit all of our resources to supporting our students and our programs. We are here to build futures and take great pride in doing so with reflection and care.

I do hope I will have the opportunity to talk with many of you in the months ahead. Have a wonderful year!

Sincerely,

Marcel G. Gauthier Head of School Shanghai American School

GUIDELINES FOR MANAGING FOOD ALLERGIES Shanghai American School is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students. Although we cannot guarantee a com- pletely allergen free environment, our goal is to minimize the risk of exposure, encourage self-responsibility in children to make healthy choices, and have a plan in place for possible emergencies. Because peanuts and tree-nuts comprise over 90% of all serious allergic reac- tions, SAS has guidelines banning peanuts and tree nuts from both campuses. Furthermore, the school cafeteria does not serve foods that contain nuts. Students who have allergies to other foods will be managed on an individual basis.

ATHLETIC TRAINERS SAS has a certified athletic trainer for each campus. They assist players and coaches during on campus sporting practices and games. Each athletic trainer is available throughout the school day and at sporting events on campus. Athletic trainers offer support to school nursing staff, are accessible for immediate medical care and can provide follow-up care that is essential for contact and collision sports.

AIR QUALITY INDEX (AQI) In order to keep students and staff in the safest and most comfortable environment possible, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is checked three times a day. If the AQI is between 151-200, there is modified outdoor activities and PE classes. In the circumstance that the AQI reaches above 200, there will be no outdoor recess or PE class. If your child has any special condition that requires special consideration in regards to outdoor activity, please contact your school nurse. The Heat Index is checked during hot summer weather. Outdoor restrictions start to be enforced when the outdoor temperature reaches 90F/32˚C. There are no outside activities when the Heat Index reaches 104F/40˚C.

PHONE CALLS FROM SCHOOL At times the school nurse may need to phone you. If you see the school number (021 3402-4530) appear on your phone please answer.
