n December 6, 2020,atruncated 48th WRC concluded in Monza a mighty 319 days after it started, such was the impact of the first, Ofrightening wave of Covid-19 cases. In the French city of Gap today (January 21), the 49th season gets underway 46 days after Sebastien Ogier celebrated making it world title number seven, as hisToyota team-mate Elfyn Evans was left to reflect on what might have been. Welshman Evans had fought Ogier, arguably rallying’s best driver, from the Monte opener to the Monza closer. He aced the Frenchman for an age on round one, outpaced him in Sweden, took advantage inTurkey before handing him a 14-point deficit to overcome at the venue just last month. But Evans came unstuck on a particularly slippery section of LombardyTarmac on the penultimate afternoon of the season before rushing, heroically, from his strickenYarisWRC to warn his chasing colleague of the danger ahead. It was the most selfless of selfless acts but ensured the wait for a third BritishWRC champion driver would continue. Evans, who turned 32 last month, hasn’t had to wait long to have another crack at the crown and, as he tells Motorsport News on these pages, nothing else will do in 2021 when a 12-round campaign is on the cards, Covid-19 permitting. However, calling what will be Ogier’s last season before WRC retirement is the tallest of tall orders. New-for-all Pirelli tyres provide the unknown quantity, new events pepper the schedule, while the competition has raised its collective game. Ott Tanak, whom Ogier dethroned last term, can count on the continuity of a second Hyundai stint. Team-mate Thierry Neuville will, for his sake, be back on the kind of form that made him a Monte winner in 2020. Kalle Rovanpera, meanwhile, was mighty during his first year in the top flight and can only get better and better still in the third worksYaris. and Ireland’s Craig Breen also have what’s required to take points away from Evans and co-driver Scott Martin, although sharing Hyundai number three rules out a title tilt from either driver. There are others on the permanent driver list but Pierre- Louis Loubet, Takamoto Katsuta and M-Sport-run Brit Gus Greensmith aren’t yet ready to fight Evans for rallying’s Ogier will want to sign off top prize, although Greensmith has ambitions to change that as with a winning season he tells MN (right).
