The plans are for the Rovaniemi round of the WRC to be driven as a three-day event: the action starts on Friday 26 February with a shakedown in the morning. The first special stages of the rally proper will be driven on Friday evening and the competition continues on Saturday 27 February with three stages that will all be driven twice in and around the Rovaniemi area. The Arctic Rally Finland Powered by CapitalBox ends on Sunday 28 February with the rally- closing Power Stage taking place in the afternoon after ten special stages and the total distance of approximately 260 special stage kilometres. It’s the second visit of the season which began in January as Finland hosts two rounds this www.wheelswithinwales.uk year. Finland hosted not just one, but two FIA World Rally Championship events, when in addition to Jyväskylä, the best rally drivers in the world will also be competing against each other in the middle of the Arctic scenery of Rovaniemi in the Finnish Lapland. Extra special attention will be paid to the Coronavirus responsibility practices, and the organisers will strictly adhere to all the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the state, the local authorities as well as the FIA and there will not be any spectator stages but enthusiasts are being encouraged to listen and watch on line or on TV. -

Auckland Transport have announced they will introduce sweeping changes to speed limits as they signalled some time ago. As I have commented before their rationale is that “inappropriate speed” contributes to 20% of deaths and serious injuries in the Super City. So, from June next year the CBD will be saddled with a blanket 30 kph speed limit, and many of the Franklin and Rodney rural roads will reduce from 100 kph to 80 or 60 kph. A record 11722 submissions were received, of which 2503 were in support, 3317 against and the balance had no firm stance. I could point out that 80% of deaths and injuries have no connection with inappropriate speed. I could surmise that the decision largely flies in the face of public opinion. I could wish them luck in getting public buy-in and compliance. I could question how a major regulatory constraint on all rate payers can be decided by unelected bureaucrats rather than the Council. But frankly, why bother? They are Council Controlled Organisation but seem to have an independence that suggests no Council control exists. I sincerely hope I am proved wrong, but I foresee very little change to the accident statistics and very little adherence to the new limits. Enough said... I have been following the MotoGP with interest this season (yes, I know they are missing 2 wheels) and it’s been well worth it. With World Champion Marc Marquez being given a curry up by the rookie Quartararo, privateer teams often out-performing the factory teams and some scintillating racing it has been great to watch. -

The legendary Lancia Stratos HF was without a doubt the most spectacular and successful rally car of the 70s. With its thrilling lines and uncompro- mising design tailored to rally use, the Stratos not only single-handedly rewrote the history of rallying, it won a permanent place in the hearts of its countless fans with its dramatic performance on the world’s asphalt and gravel tracks – a performance which included three successive world championship titles. For Michael Stoschek, a collector and driver of historic racing cars, as well as a successful entrepreneur in the automotive supply industry, the development and construction of a modern version of the Stratos represents the fulfillment of a long-held dream. Back in 2003, the dream had already begun to take on a concrete form; now, at last, it has become a reality: In November 2010, forty years after the Stratos’ presentation at the Turin Motor Show, the New Stratos will be publicly presented for the first time at the Paul Ricard Circuit. Dear Rally family, dear friends, Welcome to issue six of the FIA Rally Newsletter, which we are pleased to send out following last week’s online meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council on October 9, 2020. Inside are details of the new eighth and final round of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship, the planned calendar for the 2021 WRC, plus an update on some of the recent regulation changes. From a Regional Rally perspective, we are happy that the FIA Middle East Rally Championship title will be awarded in 2020 following a change to the points-scoring system. We are also humbled by the efforts of the Rally of Lebanon organisers to keep moving ahead with their event in November, despite the devastating explosion in Beirut in August and the suffering and disruption that it has caused. Continuing the Regional Rally theme, we are enthused by the progress of Rally3 with the first car, a Ford Fiesta Rally3 from M-Sport Poland, coming to life during a summer of test and development. An update on the work undertaken by the Rally Safety Task Force and how it helped with the successful running of three events in Croatia, San Marino and Portugal can be found in this edition. Everyone in the Rally Department is very proud that the Sporting Regulations for FIA Rally Star have been approved with momentum really building up following the publication of a detailed set of guidelines to help ASNs around the world organise the initial talent detection events. FIA Rally Star will help to uncover and nurture future world champions by encouraging mass participation in the sport at grassroots level. -

Victory and podiums finishes in Sydney At the fourth round of the Australian GT Championship, Christopher Mies and Ryan Millier produced the best performance in an Audi R8 LMS ultra. At the Sydney Motorsport Park, the duo fielded by Audi customer team Jamec PEM Racing headed an Audi one-two finish. Second was Audi driver Nathan Antunes (Skwirk/Beechwood), who was third in race two ahead of Mies/Millier. There was also an Audi victory in the Trophy classification to celebrate: in race two, Mark Griffith won from his stablemates Greg Taylor/Barton Mawer. In the first race, Taylor/Mawer made the podium in third place. Tom Kristensen with Danish crown prince at golf tournament Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen was delighted about receiving an invitation to the European Tour with royal participation. The former professional racing driver competed in the Pro-Am class in the golf event ‘made in Denmark’ with two celebrity competitors – the Danish Crown Prince Frederik and the most successful Danish golfer Thomas Bjørn. Jacob Brunsborg, the son of Himmerland Golf Resort owner Lars Larsen, completed the team. Around 6,000 spectators attended the competition in Farsø in northern Denmark. -

L’exposition a lieu sur le parking pour la journée du samedi où quelques dizaines d’automobiles de toutes marques et de toutes les époques se réunissent ainsi que quelques motos. Cela permet de se revoir et de passer une bonne journée entre passionnés. Un café/croissant accueille les participants dès le matin et un casse-croute est offert à partir de 13 heures, après bien sûr un apéro commun aux deux clubs. 2 Une bonne ambiance règne sur le parking Une nouveauté au club, la nappe officielle US.CARS 78 ! 3 Un habitué des sorties, notre Barnum fétiche Elle est arrivée sans le moindre bruit, à la surprise de tout le monde, la Ford 1929 de notre ami Jean 4 Orgeval le 24 juin : La fête de la Saint-Jean à Orgeval (Yvelines) sera célébrée ce samedi 23 et ce dimanche 24 juin. -

In 1902 a Renault Type K won its first victory in the Paris-to-Vienna road race, propelled by a four cylinder engine producing slightly more than 40 horsepower. It beat the more powerful Mercedes and Panhard racers because they broke down, proving very early on that to finish first, first you have to finish. In that same year Renault patented the turbocharger, something it had not forgotten in 1977 when it was the first manufacturer to race a turbocharged Formula One car. The RS01 was initially nicknamed the 'Yellow Teapot' by amused rival teams, but intensive development eventually saw it scoring fourth place in the 1978 US Grand Prix, and a pole position the following year. Within three years of the Yellow Teapot’s arrival most rival teams were also using turbochargers. Although today’s Renaultsport RS27-2013 engine is a normally aspirated V8, as required by the regulations, from 2014 it will be replaced by a highly advanced, downsized 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 featuring a pair of powerful energy recuperation systems that feed twin electric motors. These include an Energy Recovery System (ERS-K) that harvests Kinetic energy, and a second Energy Recovery System (ERS-H) that captures Heat. -

2021 MEDIA GUIDE Arctic Rally Finland February 26 - 28, 2021 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Arctic Rally Finland February 26 - 28, 2021 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Given the freezing temperatures outside, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Arctic Rally Finland and for the first of what we hope will be two visits by the WRC and Hyundai Motorsport to the country in 2021. Before I underline the team’s hopes and expectations for this event, I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that’s gone into putting on this rally in such a short amount of time. The efforts of AKK Sports and all the volunteers, particularly in the context of COVID-19, has really impressed me so a big thank you to them. It’s fair to say we showed our limits on Rallye Monte-Carlo and found ourselves licking our wounds and trying to get ahead. Unfortunately, it didn’t work there and after making some changes to our approach we start the second round of the season hoping it will be much better than the first. Having wished a fond farewell to Carlos del Barrio after Monte as he prepared for the next chapter of his career, we are pleased to welcome back Craig and Paul for the start of their half-season campaign in a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. We know very well their ability and determination as they try to make a strong start to their season. As well as our regular World Rally Car drivers, we are giving a big chance to a really promising youngster, Oliver Solberg.
