Rally Directions, September 2011 3 Shannons Eastern Creek Classic CMC Day The Classic Rally Club was again well represented at the Shannon's Eastern Creek day run by the CMC, Council of Motor Clubs. Our location was back on the main side after last year's allocation and was a reasonable position on the concrete skid pan. Ten cars represented our Club with a array of different rally cars, my XD falcon dirt rally car, Greg Yate's Mercedes, Amir Shushtarian's BMW, Geoff Mill's Mustang, Garth Taylor's Jag accompanied by Paul Martin, Tim McGrath's Mini, Steve Friend's Mercedes, Chris Hallam's Jag XK 120, Ross Warner's MGA, Danny Castro's Morris Minor and Vince & Kaye Harlor's Datsun 240Z. Thanks for all those who helped make the display so good and the new windscreen banners set the cars off a treat. There were just as many other CRC cars scattered around on display with other clubs. Congratulations to Doug & Xanthea Barbour who had their MGA in concourse with the MG Club and got first place in their category. John Cooper XK120 - CHAMPION RALLY CAR OF THE 1950s History While Jaguar’s racing history is well known, its success in rallying is less known. I casually mentioned to Gary Maher over dinner one night in Kurrajong that I wanted to write an article on Jaguar’s success in rallying, to be told “Oh I did that last year, to drum up interest in the 2009 Mountain Rally”.

A RENAULT ‘FAMILY’ Jean Rédélé was the first-born son of Madeleine Prieur and Emile Rédélé, a Renault dealer based in Dieppe and a former mechanic of Ferenc Szisz – the first Renault Frères ‘factory driver’, winner of the Grand Prix de la Sarthe in 1906 at Le Mans and runner-up in the Grand Prix de l'A.C.F. in Dieppe in 1907. Louis Renault himself had hired Emile Rédélé right at the beginning of the 20th Century. At the end of the First World War, at the request of Louis Renault, the young Emile Rédélé settled in Dieppe and opened a Renault dealership there in rue Thiers. Two years later, Jean-Emile- Amédée Rédélé was born on May 17, 1922. After completing his studies in Normandy, Jean Rédélé took his Baccalauréat exam during the Second World War and came into contact with people as diverse as Antoine Blondin, Gérard Philipe and Edmond de Rothschild. He chose to be a sub-prefect before settling on a career direction and enrolling at the H.E.C.

The car had been developed from the Alpine A108, but was more stylish and more dynamic, with an even lower engine cover, a larger glazed area and the rear lights from the Renault 8. The new engine demanded changes to the air intakes: with the radiator mounted at the rear, cooling exits were opened in the resin bodywork behind the rear wheel arches, disguised with four chrome strips.

    PADDY HOPKIRK GENTLEMAN, LEGEND IN THE CLASSIC MINI AND FIFTH BEATLE. His tour-de-force at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964 transformed the racing driver from Northern Ireland into the United Kingdom’s most illustrious rally driver and propelled the classic Mini to the status of motor-sport icon. Driving fun typical of the brand is still the passion of the racing driver, now 87 years old. And he continues to relish the challenge of winding country roads. Munich. Paddy Hopkirk had stowed a can of caviar in the toolbox of his Mini Cooper S and he had just mastered the “Night of the Long Knives” in a rumbustious drive. In 1964, the Monte Carlo Rally was still a genuine adventure for all the competing racing drivers and the spectacle was broadcast live on television. This was the era when automobile manufacturers all over the world discovered rally sport as the perfect stage for presenting their models. And consequently, vehicles from different weight and performance classes competed against each other with a handicap formula providing appropriate compensation when allocating points. When Hopkirk, now 87 years old, talks about his tour-de-force driving the classic Mini with start number 37, the fascination of classic motor sport immediately comes alive. Today, Hopkirk can still get excited about the driving characteristics of the classic Mini. “The Mini was a very advanced motor car. Its front-wheel drive and the transversely mounted engine at the front presented significant advantages, just like the fact that the car was small given that the roads had lots of bends and were narrow,” explained the rally driver from Northern Ireland as he recalled his greatest triumph.
