Inside are details of the new eighth and final round of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship, the planned calendar for the 2021 WRC, plus an update on some of the recent regulation changes. From a Regional Rally perspective, we are happy that the FIA Middle East Rally Championship title will be awarded in 2020 following a change to the points-scoring system. We are also humbled by the efforts of the Rally of Lebanon organisers to keep moving ahead with their event in November, despite the devastating explosion in Beirut in August and the suffering and disruption that it has caused. An update on the work undertaken by the Rally Safety Task Force and how it helped with the successful running of three events in Croatia, San Marino and Portugal can be found in this edition. Everyone in the Rally Department is very proud that the Sporting Regulations for FIA Rally Star have been approved with momentum really building up following the publication of a detailed set of guidelines to help ASNs around the world organise the initial talent detection events. FIA Rally Star will help to uncover and nurture future world champions by encouraging mass participation in the sport at grassroots level.

Before I underline the team’s hopes and expectations for this event, I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that’s gone into putting on this rally in such a short amount of time. The efforts of AKK Sports and all the volunteers, particularly in the context of COVID-19, has really impressed me so a big thank you to them. It’s fair to say we showed our limits on Rallye Monte-Carlo and found ourselves licking our wounds and trying to get ahead. Unfortunately, it didn’t work there and after making some changes to our approach we start the second round of the season hoping it will be much better than the first. Having wished a fond farewell to Carlos del Barrio after Monte as he prepared for the next chapter of his career, we are pleased to welcome back Craig and Paul for the start of their half-season campaign in a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. We know very well their ability and determination as they try to make a strong start to their season. As well as our regular World Rally Car drivers, we are giving a big chance to a really promising youngster, Oliver Solberg.

Innanzitutto sar`asviluppata un'attenta attivit`adi modellizza- zione, con differenti livelli di complessit`aper quanto riguarda i modelli di veicolo e i tracciati percorsi. Il problema verr`aquindi trascritto, mediante il software GPOPS-II, nella formulazione tipica di un problema NLP. La soluzione `edun- que ottenuta grazie all'utilizzo di un codice di ottimizzazione, ovvero IPOPT, che permette di risolvere problemi con un numero molto elevato di variabili. Succes- sivamente sar`aconsiderata la validazione del modello numerico con riferimento ai test su strada, oltre ad un'analisi dei risultati e delle peculiarit`aderivanti da di- verse strategie di modellizzazione. Infine verr`asviluppata un'analisi parametrica relativa ai principali parametri che influenzano la prestazione della vettura. vi vii Abstract The work investigates minimum lap time problems of race cars. A careful mod- elling activity is carried out first, with different levels of complexity both in the vehicle and road models. The problem is then transcribed in a form suitable for the solution as an NLP problem, using the software GPOPS-II. The solution is then achieved by means of an optimizer used for large scale problems, namely IPOPT. A validation of the numerical model against road tests is provided, together with a focus on the results and peculiarities resulting from the different modelling ap- proaches.

From 2020 Motorsport UK introduced a requirement for all competitors to hold a new RS Clubman licence as a minimum, which is free of charge. If you compete, but don’t currently hold a licence you will need to apply for this. These changes will affect Autotests,Trials, Cross Country, Road Rallying, 12 Cars and Scatters. Passengers will also now be required to hold an RS Clubman licence. The RS Clubman licence can be applied for online and aims to encourage more grass roots participation, as well ensuring all Motorsport UK event competitors are covered by comprehensive insurance. Additionally, licence holders will have access to Motorsport UK’s Member Benefits Programme that includes the new upgraded personal accident cover. Starting from July 25th and running until October we have now had confirmation that our monthly Breakfast meet will take place at Dean Forest Railway. Steam meets petrol. Breakfast baguettes will be available but if possible we would like a rough idea of numbers. I’ve just had a lovely scorching hot day at Thruxton. Andy & I went up in the Mustang which has excellent air con so we were nice and cool when we arrived.
