Official Race Card October 16-18, 2020 OCTOBER 16-18, 2020 OFFICIAL RACE CARD FOREWARD BY THE DUKE OF RICHMOND WELCOME TO SPEEDWEEK FOREWARD BY Welcome everyone to Goodwood SpeedWeek THE DUKE OF presented by Mastercard. Now, at last, we RICHMOND can fire up those engines and go racing, and so bring our motorsport season spectacularly back to life. Of course, I am very sad and disappointed that you cannot be at the circuit with us but, let me assure you, it’s going to be an utterly unique and memorable event and you won’t miss a minute of the action on all three days. Ironically, because we have to stage the event behind closed doors, we are able to create a spectacle that we would normally never dream of doing. As a live and interactive TV show, SpeedWeek will be brought to you in a way that has never been seen before in motorsport broadcasting. The live stream, and the ITV coverage, will be free to air and will take you right into the heart of the event with all the race action, interviews with the drivers and coverage of the new rally stages, the Shootout for the fastest lap of the circuit, and a sensational celebration of 70 years of Formula 1. SpeedWeek combines many of the best elements of the Members’ Meeting, the Festival of Speed and the Revival, plus some new and exciting content that will see the cars using parts of the circuit that are way beyond the track limits. The Shootout for fastest lap will see modern machinery on the circuit, something we’ve never been able to do before. I am very excited about all the new things we’re doing to bring a ground-breaking show to your homes and to race fans right around the world. We had to bring our season out of hibernation and, in many ways, this has given us an opportunity to create a whole new show that will embrace all of you who cannot be here with us this weekend. I would like to thank all our fantastic partners who have helped us create SpeedWeek for you and stood by us so loyally during the pandemic. I hope you will all be tuned in at home and be part of this unique moment in Goodwood’s motorsport history.     First victory at the First Grand Prix in Monaco in 1929 MOLSHEIM 15 04 2019 RETROSPECTIVE: NINETY YEARS AGO BUGATTI WON THE FIRST GRAND PRIX IN MONACO. When the start flag lowers at 13:30, the racing cars roar. Among others, a Bugatti Type 35 B stands at the front. A familiar image for years. But this time something is different, even though Bugatti and motorsports have been inseparable for ten years. Nevertheless, 1929 marks a special year for Bugatti. This is the year the French manufacturer wins the first Grand Prix in Monaco. After almost four hours, the racing driver William "Williams" Charles Frederick Grover is the first one to cross the finish line in a Bugatti Type 35 B at the Grand Prix Monaco – the start of a new era. Today, with its tight city circuit, the Monaco GP is the highlight of any Formula1 season, and is one of the most famous car races in the world alongside the 500 miles in Indianapolis and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Everything started very small 90 years ago. The idea of beginning a race in the middle of Monaco came in the mid-1920s when Monaco's General Commissioner for the Monaco Automobile Club, Anthony Noghès, arrived. But it took a few years for his idea to be put into action. At the beginning of April 1929, 20 drivers registered and 16 actually started on 14th of April 1929. Eight drivers relied on models from Bugatti, such as the Type 35 C and Type 35 B, the latter being the choice of William Charles Frederick Grover.

Power came from the Jaguar V-12 petrol engine with a choice of a manual or automatic transmission, but the manual was soon dropped. V-12 automobiles were unusual at the time, with notable others coming from Italian luxury sports car makers Lamborghini and Ferrari. The specifications of the XJ-S compared well with both Italian cars; it was able to accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.6 seconds (automatic) and had a top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h).[4] The first series of XJ-S cars had a Borg-Warner Model 12 transmission with a cast-iron case and a bolt-on bell-housing.

    Sebring, 18 March 2001 Audi repeats last year’s Sebring victory Audi had a successful dress rehersal for the 24 Hour Race at Le Mans: For the second time in a row Team Audi Sport North America took a 1-2 victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring (USA). Michele Alboreto, Laurent Aiello and Rinaldo Capello finished the race just 0.482s ahead of their team mates and last year’s winners Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro. The Audi customer teams of Champion and Johansson even made it the first 1-2-3-4 victory of Audi in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) finishing 3rd and 4th. In front of a record crowd of 168,000 spectators, the two Infineon Audi R8s were setting the pace from the start on a track which is famous for being very demanding. The two customer R8s, however, stayed close making the pace among the leaders extremely fast. The two Infineon Audi R8s were fighting for victory for the whole twelve hour distance. Despite the enormous strain, the cars did not suffer from any severe difficulties. The Infineon Audi R8 #1 just had its front brake discs replaced shortly after half distance, the companion car had two pit stops because of a malfunction in the engine’s electrics. For the Audi crew the dress rehersal for Le Mans, however, is not completely over: On Monday and Tuesday the torture of another full 12- hour-distance is on the schedule for one of the two successful Infineon Audi R8s.
