When Ted Walker and I set out to record the history of Lister using Ted’s Ferret Fotographics archives as the basis, we certainly didn’t realise that what began as a relatively simple photo-book would turn into the major work that it did. But when I approached Brian Lister and told him of our intentions, he soon became personally interested in the project, and began to uncover all sorts of fascinating documents and pictures. Augmented by more period photographs from his former chief mechanic Edwin ‘Dick’ Barton, the book grew into a full- blown history of Lister, covering all Brian’s cars and telling the story of the family company, George Lister Engineering (which still flourishes today, incidentally, though it ceased to have any connection with cars after the team retired in 1959). The final cog in the mechanism, as it were, was John Pearson. As I say in the book’s introduction, John has had a longer continuous relationship with Listers than anyone else, and when I first came onto the scene around 1966, John was one of the first Jaguar racing people I met. I soon learned that for several years from 1962 he had been mechanic to John Coundley, that prolific owner and driver of Lister-Jaguars, and before that had seen the earliest Listers perform and watched Lister works driver Archie Scott Brown in his prime. From the 1970s onwards John has owned many Lister-Jaguars, and raced them to good effect too, and in his garage today is one of the ‘Centenary’ editions of the car produced in 1990. The Lister story is surprisingly complex, but John steered me through the minefield and added unique insights into both cars and drivers. For the launch of the book, I chose the Race Retro historic motorsports show r at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire as the venue. The organisers immediately showed interest, and generously arranged for us to have a four-car stand. With Brian Lister and John Pearson, a cross-section of Listers were chosen e for display, and when contacted all the owners involved unhesitatingly t agreed to loan their vehicles for the three-day show. t It was especially good to see a number of those who took the Lister-Jaguar back into the fray as historic racers in the late 1960s (the time I first encountered the cars), or were campaigning them in the 1970s and 1980s. e It was John Harper (along with Anthony Hutton) who really got me into the l Lister scene, while my erstwhile editor when I was on the staff of Thoroughbred & Classic Cars, Michael Bowler, was a multiple Lloyds & s Scottish/FIA championship winner in the late 1970s and early 1980s. David Ham was with us too, and David’s driving of his very original Lister-Jaguar was something I always admired in the 1970s (his son Simon drives the car w today). Tony Dron has raced a huge variety of historic cars and his main association with Listers came when he drove (and won) for Syd Silverman in the United States during the mid-1990s. e The book is in stock for immediate delivery. n 3 Standing behind YOB 575 during the book launch are (from left) John Coundley, Dick Barton, Paul Skilleter, Colin Crisp, Brian Lister, Stephen Bond, David Ham and Jack Sears. It is a personal story of passion, struggle and courage in the constant shadow of death, the tale of motor racing when the man behind the wheel made all the difference — the story of a man who showed no fear, on the track, in the air as a WW2 bomber pilot, or as a POW. It is a gripping account of how a man went to the top of motor racing with very little money behind him, and who through sheer determination and skill made the transition from the amateur to the professional in motor racing — and helped to create a new marque, HWM, along the way. Highly evocative of the period from the 1930s to the 1950s, the life and times of George Abecassis are brought vividly to life not only by unparalleled access to the family archives and interviews with all the surviving friends and associates of George, but also by a photographic feast. No expense has been spared to bring the reader the very best in motor racing photography from the masters of the art — 50 images by Klemantaski, 50 by Geoffrey Goddard, 30 by Guy Griffiths, and many others by Rodolfo Mailander and other fine photographers of the day. This exclusive book may never be reprinted and those interested are advised to obtain their copy now by placing an order. George Abecassis was one of the last of the amateur drivers whose experience and dedication to the sport made him a semi-professional, and whose successes and efforts both before and after the War made him a e household name. His accomplished and courageous driving of his own cars, such as Altas and Bugattis, and in the Aston Martin, HWM and Austin Healey teams, made him an important figure in British racing in its own right. u g o l a t SIZE:225x297mm,412pp STDEdition:£65.00+P&P a ISBN:978-0-9nnnnnn-n-n LTDEdition:£150.00+8.50UKP&P ShippingExtraOverseas–pleasecheckwithusorourwebsite c Productinformation The HWM marque embraced sports cars (including the HWM-Jaguar) and 5 Formula Two. It includes a vast amount of new material which came to light while the book was being researched – much from people who knew Mike and who have provided us with first-hand descriptions of the man at work and play. This book primarily concentrates on Mike's personal life together with full details of his racing career, the latter introduced by respected journalist Doug Nye. We have much input from many who actually knew him in daily life and have come forward with their stories. It also includes some relevant articles that have been previously published only in specialist magazines. Mike's motor racing career is covered with many photographs, and the book singles out for close examination his special relationship with Jaguar – the cars and the company. This includes a detailed examination of Mike’s role in the 1955 Le Mans disaster, for which many believe he was unfairly blamed, and the circumstances surrounding his death in VDU 881, the 3.4L saloon he fatally crashed on the Guildford by-pass on 22 January 1959. His many personal cars that he owned and also in some cases, raced, are covered in as much detail as possible. Existing owners have been interviewed worldwide for period photos and facts from the time of Mike's ownership. There are also specially-commissioned drawings of Mike’s cars, and even overhead photographs of key locations. Along with this new material, the book also reveals extraordinary fresh evidence relating to his death. It has full details of his racing career with a never-before attempted listing of all his e race-car numbers. u g o l a t SIZE:225x297mm,447pp STDEdition:£34.95 a ISBN:978-0-9550102-4-8 LIMITEDEdition:£150.00 Shipping Extra – please check with us or our website c Productinformation JaguarXK140Explored 7 byBernardViarteditedbyRogerPayne This really quite extraordinary book from Bernard Viart Edited By Roger Payne records every detail of this popular Jaguar sports car of the mid-1950s.
