INDIANA’S MERCEDES-BENZ “FOREIGN AGENT”

Mercedes Benz USA had advised me over a year ago that there was no one in the organizaon that had worked with or had knowledge of Max Hoffman as the first Mercedes Cars arrived in the US aer the war. They were pleasantly surprised that I was the sole survivor known in the country represenng Mercedes Benz outside West Germany.

Sixty years ago, at the age of 26, I was one of a few hundred proud "Foreign Agents" world-wide. In the 1950's I worked with Max Hoffman, the United States Mercedes Benz distributor, with my company, Auto Imports Ltd. which was the first agency for the state of Indiana.

Before there were Mercedes Benz factory offices in America, our firm was well aware of this decade's proudest achievement in world-wide sporng events. The sales and service of Mercedes Benz automobiles in the heart of America was my job!

June 15, 1955 was a tragic day at Le Mans, France. It became apparent that Daimler Benz would disconnue factory sanc- oned motor sporng events. It was difficult for our firm to understand the impact of the decision (which lasted nearly 30 years) but Mercedes Benz would connue to lead the world with research and development for this new era of great auto- move products for the world's highways.

A few months before Le Mans, I had the pleasure of meeng with Mr. Srling Moss at the "12 hours of Endurance" race in Sebring, Florida. We had a mutual interest in the success of Mercedes, Jaguar, and Ausn Healy sales in Indianapolis. Even then, Le Mans was not his favorite motor sporng event. Most recently, in 2014, I met with Sir Srling Moss at Pebble Beach and we discussed his career in internaonal racing. I was able to meet with Juan Fangio on a few occasions, most recently at the "100th year of the automobile" celebraon at Pebble Beach in 1986.

Early examples of technological advances were at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway including the first use of the rear-view mirror. Mercedes Benz has been on the forefront of improving safety and performance of the automobile today. The oldest automove firm in the world connues to fulfill their moo, "The Best or Nothing."

It was nearly 60 years ago on June 15,1955 that the leer from Daimler -Benz was sent to my office at Auto Imports Ltd. on 422N. Capital Ave. Indianapolis. The tragic accident had occurred and we as "Foreign Agents" had to be nofied. Anyone that represented Mercedes-Benz outside of West Germany was considered a Foreign Agent. We were within Max Hoffman's distribuon of the United States, and was responsible for the State of Indiana, as you might recall. A day later a follow-up leer was sent from Hoffman's New York offices. - R. Kent Emigh 7
