'Racing Is Life. Anything Before Or After Is Just Waiting.'
Steve McQueen’s 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso recently went under the hammer at Christie’s in Monterey, offering another reminder of a man whose motoring exploits mirrored some of his most famous onscreen performances. Once Upon a Wire Wheel
Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region. -

February7, 2019 Toyota Motor Corporation GAZOO Racing Company TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Outlines 2019 Motorsports Activities TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is a racing company positioning motorsports activities as the basis of our quest to create ever-better cars. From products developed through these activities to the establishment of the GR Garage, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s motorsports activities have been promoted as a comprehensive method of increasing numbers of car fans. At last month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, we unveiled the new “Supra,” which is set to become the first global model in the GR series line-up. The new Supra incorporates the knowledge and know-how that TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has accumulated thus far, and has been developed with the goal of enabling customers to fully experience the joy of driving. We have positioned the new Supra as our flagship model and, by feeding back knowledge gained through motorsports activities into the development of new products, we intend to further expand the GR series line-up. In 2018, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing achieved the long-desired goal of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans and also secured the WRC manufacturers’ title, demonstrating that the challenges we have embarked on are leading to concrete results. However, we will not rest on our laurels. In order to deliver the anticipation and excitement of driving to a wider audience, we will engage in the motorsports activities listed below in 2019. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing will compete in the 2019-2020 WEC season. (The driver line-up will be announced at a later date.)With team line-ups, we will also compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours Endurance Race and other races in Japan respectively. -

1 MYSTERIES IN THE ARCHIVES Lesson Plan by Louise Sarrasin, educator Commission scolaire de Montréal (CSDM), Montreal, Quebec Objective To help students discover or learn more about famous or lesser-known media images that capture key events of the 20th century so they can situate the events on a timeline, better understand them and analyze certain aspects. Target audience Students age 14 to 20 Connections Arts and Culture Languages Social Sciences Films needed for the lesson plan Films in the Mysteries in the Archives collection headed by Serge Viallet (10 x 26 min) Summary of the lesson plan This lesson plan will enable students to discover or rediscover media images that capture key events in the history of the 20th century. It will help them see how the images were used by the filmmakers, journalists or the media to present this history in a certain way. In viewing films directed by Serge Viallet, Julien Gaurichon and Alexandre Auque in the Mysteries in the Archives collection, students will examine and question the footage presented so as to better understand the role that such images can play in interpreting history. In so doing, they will hone their analytical skills and critical judgment in order to develop a well-founded opinion (see Note 1). Preparatory activity: Images and facts Approximate duration: 60 min Begin by writing the following words by Serge Viallet on the board or a flipchart: “Images tell stories, and we tell the story of the images.” Get your students to comment on this quote by asking them the following questions: -

When Ted Walker and I set out to record the history of Lister using Ted’s Ferret Fotographics archives as the basis, we certainly didn’t realise that what began as a relatively simple photo-book would turn into the major work that it did. But when I approached Brian Lister and told him of our intentions, he soon became personally interested in the project, and began to uncover all sorts of fascinating documents and pictures. Augmented by more period photographs from his former chief mechanic Edwin ‘Dick’ Barton, the book grew into a full- blown history of Lister, covering all Brian’s cars and telling the story of the family company, George Lister Engineering (which still flourishes today, incidentally, though it ceased to have any connection with cars after the team retired in 1959). The final cog in the mechanism, as it were, was John Pearson. As I say in the book’s introduction, John has had a longer continuous relationship with Listers than anyone else, and when I first came onto the scene around 1966, John was one of the first Jaguar racing people I met. I soon learned that for several years from 1962 he had been mechanic to John Coundley, that prolific owner and driver of Lister-Jaguars, and before that had seen the earliest Listers perform and watched Lister works driver Archie Scott Brown in his prime.
