garcin de tassy Origin and Diffusion of Hindustani [translator’s note: Presented here is the translation of a memorandum entitled ìOrigine et Diffusion de líHindoustani Appelé Language Générale ou Nationale de líIndeî (Origin and Diffusion of Hindustani, Called the Common or National Language of India) by Garcin de Tassy (1871) published in the transactions of the Royal Academy of Science, Arts, and Belles-Lettres of Caen, France. Written in the last decade of his life, this brief memorandum contains some of his observations and conclusions based on over half a century of involvement with Indian languagesóespecially Urdu, which was gener- ally called Hindustani during his time. Most of his peer academy members, to whom this communication was directed, probably did not know much about Urdu. Consequently, he includes some explanations and background information that would seem too elementary nowadays. Nevertheless, some of his remarks still seem fresh and surprising. Even his digressionary remarks, which are dispersed throughout the note and which often seem factitious, contain much information about the historical and cultural factors influencing the development of Urdu. The note also reveals de Tassyís passionate at- tachment to Urdu and his angst over the Urdu-Hindi controversy which, he thought, was going to lead to disastrous religious and political strife in India.] We can only make conjectures about the exact dates of Indiaís invasion by the Aryans and the diffusion of their language; the language was called Sanskrit (well-formed), in contrast to the language of the natives and its various dialects that were together given the name Prakrit (ill-formed) by the scornful victors. -

These forms of antiquity incorporate the milieus from which short story developed.It is still a developing branch of literary study.A critical enquiry is made in this paper to trace out the development of short story as a special genre of literature. Keywords: Short story,Genre, Short Fiction, Tale, Folktales, Exemplum Before going to analyse the development of it, it must explode and finish before short story it is convenient to examine the very interruption occurs on fatigue sets essence of short story. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh http://drsirswal.webs.com Life Introduction • The good life is one in which what someone does and feels leads to and is constitutive of their fulfillment, also called happiness. Such happiness is neither primarily an experience; nor is it found as a consequence of following moral laws. • Rather, happiness is fundamentally an activity: it is the state of the person who is living without hindrance the life that becomes a human being Human as Social Beings • To be human is to be social, that is to say it is to live in a community. As Aristotle put it: “That which is genuinely and not just nominally a community (polis or city-state) must concern itself with virtue. Otherwise, the community (koinonia or solidarity) is a mere alliance... The community (polis) is intended to enable all to live well, meaning by that a perfected and independent life.” Individual and Society • To put it even more strongly, individual people do not make a society: society makes the individual. It is society that gives someone the language, rationality and symbols that make their individuality possible; it is these things that enable them to make themselves, possess themselves and be free. Their Relations • This is also to say that a healthy society is one that establishes the right path between radical individualism (there is no such thing as society) and totalitarianism (there is only society); and it is one that encourages critique from its citizens since that is part and parcel of its ability to feed the life of those who live in it. -

Dr. J. Radhika, the Principal of the college welcomed the gathering. The meeting was presided over by Mr. N.Kasturirangan, the secretary of the college who was also the patron of the conference. Dr. S. Ramamurthy, Dean of Academics and Director of the conference introduced the theme of the conference and said that the conference seeks to take stock of the pedagogical developments in Comparative Literature all over the world in order to map the Indian context in terms of the same. He added that the conference proposes to discuss the state of Comparative Literature today and will explore how the discipline has responded to the pressures of a globalised educational matrix. Dr. Dorothy Fegueira in her keynote address referred to some theoretical and ethical concerns in the study of Comparative Literature and inaugurated the conference. Dr. Chandra Mohan, General Secretary, Comparative Literature Association of India & Former Vice-President International Comparative Literature Association, presided over the plenary session of the first day and traced the activities of Comparative Literature Association of India. Prof. Seighild Bogumil, Eminent Professor in French and German Comparative Literature from Ruhr University at Bochum delivered her special address on the Comparative Literature Scenarios in Europe with reference to France and Germany. -

In analyzing this German Romantic self-representation through India within the context of the Romantic critique of European modernity, the Dissertation considers this phenomenon as a case of the Romantic re-integration project. The Dissertation juxtaposes four figures – Friedrich Schlegel, Otmar Frank, Joseph Goerres, and Arthur Schopenhauer – who are particularly representative of those German Romantic thinkers who were influenced by Indian culture and who applied the Indian models to their interpretations of world history. These interpretations were rooted in the models developed by the missionaries and the Enlightenment thinkers who looked for the original monotheism outside the biblical tradition. The Romantics, however, highlighted not only the religious but also the national dimension of the connection between the original home of the Urvolk and its descendants in the modern German-speaking realm. In tracing the Urvolk ’s migration from India to the West, Friedrich Schlegel used as his explanatory model the Brahmanic narrative of the degenerated warriors becoming barbarians due to their failure to observe the dharma.
