PEEFACE. This Catalogue of the Bengali Printed Books acquired by the Library of the British Museum during the years 1886—1910 has been prepared by Mr. Blumhardt as a supple- ment to the volume compiled by him and published by order of the Trustees in 1886. In the present catalogue a classified index of titles has been added ; in other respects the methods employed in the earlier volume have been closely followed in this work. L. D. This Catalogue of Bengali l)ooks acquired during the last 24 years forms a supplement to the Bengali Catalogue published in 1886. It has been prepared on the same principles, and with the same system of transliteration. The editions of the Bible, and portions of the Biiile, which are entered in the Catalogue of 188G have l)een embodied in the present volume, in order to make this article quite complete. All the entries under this heading have been carefully revised with the help of the " Historical Catalogue of the printed editions of Holy Scripture in the Library of the British and Foreign Bible Society," by T. H. Darlow and H. F. Moule. As no Subject-Index was prepared for the former catalogue, the titles of all the Works in that catalogue have been included in the Subject-Index of this volume, those of works entered only in the catalogue of 1886 being indicated by an asterisk, and those of editions of the same work which appear in both catalogues being marked by a dagger. The English, or other European, title of a liook is entered in the General Index when it has no Bengali title. Works with both Encflish and Bengali titles are shown under the Bengali title only, except newspapers and other periodicals. In the case of a work having an alternative title, both are entered in the General Index, and only the principal title in the Subject-Index, with the other printed in brackets. J. F. BLUilHARDT. It is, perhaps, the first attempt that has been made to arrange Bengali writings under authors' names ; and the principles on which this has been done are fulh stated in the Preface. GEO. PEEFACE In submitting to the public the present Catalogue of Bengali books contained in the Library of the British Museum the compiler finds it necessary to explain the general principles of cataloguing adopted by him, and the special rules laid down for the treatment of Oriental names of authors and books. He has tried to observe throughout one consistent plan of transliteration, based on intelligible principles of etymology, yet rejecting alike the popular mode of writing names according to their modern pronunciation, and the pedantic system of referring everything back to its original Sanskrit form ; thereby making unnecessary deviations from proper Bengali idiom.

    The Bhakti Cycle of Assamese Lyrics: Bargits and After Maheswar Neog --- www.atributetosankaradeva.org presents before the readers a pioneering paper on the Vaisnava music of Assam, authored by Dr. Maheswar Neog. It covers virtually every aspect of the devotional lyric of the Sankaradeva Movement (and also traces its progress through time). This paper was written in the early part of the latter half of the 20th century when Bargit research was still at a nascent stage. Editing note(s):- Diacritics has been used sparingly; generally only the long diacritic (macron) pertaining to a/A has been highlighted and that too, depending upon the context. --- Introduction In the latter half of the fifteenth century Sankaradeva (1449-1568 A.D.), a Kayastha by caste, founded a school of neo-Vaisnavism in Assam. This religion has a monotheistic doctrine based on the Bhagavata Purana and is called Eka-Sarana Nama- Dharma. It enjoins the worship of the one Supreme Deity or Visnu, specially in His incarnation as Krsna and interdicts its followers from the worship of any other god or goddess. The Radha-Krsna cult is not acknowledged in his system of Vaisnavism. Of the different modes of bhakti or devotion, the dasya (servile) mode was insisted upon by Sankaradeva. (Dr. B. Kakati, The Mother Goddess Kamakhya, 1948, pp. 75-77). The attitude of the votary is to look upon Krsna - not as a play-mate as in sakhya (friendship), not as one’s child as in vatsalya (filial love), not as the male lover as in madhura (conjugal love), nor as an impersonal Being as in santa rasa (calm sentiment) - but as the master demanding love and veneration of the devotee as of a servant.

    garcin de tassy Origin and Diffusion of Hindustani [translator’s note: Presented here is the translation of a memorandum entitled ìOrigine et Diffusion de líHindoustani Appelé Language Générale ou Nationale de líIndeî (Origin and Diffusion of Hindustani, Called the Common or National Language of India) by Garcin de Tassy (1871) published in the transactions of the Royal Academy of Science, Arts, and Belles-Lettres of Caen, France. Written in the last decade of his life, this brief memorandum contains some of his observations and conclusions based on over half a century of involvement with Indian languagesóespecially Urdu, which was gener- ally called Hindustani during his time. Most of his peer academy members, to whom this communication was directed, probably did not know much about Urdu. Consequently, he includes some explanations and background information that would seem too elementary nowadays. Nevertheless, some of his remarks still seem fresh and surprising. Even his digressionary remarks, which are dispersed throughout the note and which often seem factitious, contain much information about the historical and cultural factors influencing the development of Urdu. The note also reveals de Tassyís passionate at- tachment to Urdu and his angst over the Urdu-Hindi controversy which, he thought, was going to lead to disastrous religious and political strife in India.] We can only make conjectures about the exact dates of Indiaís invasion by the Aryans and the diffusion of their language; the language was called Sanskrit (well-formed), in contrast to the language of the natives and its various dialects that were together given the name Prakrit (ill-formed) by the scornful victors.
