Author: Henrik Janné Number of pages: 52 Abstract: The research for this thesis tries to find out how the Buddhist jātaka stories are used in the classroom in Benares, Uttar Pradesh India. The subjective also incorporates an aspect of evaluation of Buddhist ethics and a presentation of it. This study project is conducted with an inductive empirical qualitative methodological orientation. This research has found that the Buddhist jātaka tales are a beneficial tool to use in the classroom by teachers when teaching ethics and moral to students. Introduction
1 Introduction A jackal who had fallen into a vat of indigo dye decided to exploit his mar- velous new appearance and declared himself king of the forest. He ap- pointed the lions and other animals as his vassals, but took the precaution of having all his fellow jackals driven into exile. One day, hearing the howls of the other jackals in the distance, the indigo jackal’s eyes filled with tears and he too began to howl. The lions and the others, realizing the jackal’s true nature, sprang on him and killed him. This is one of India’s most widely known fables, and it is hard to imagine that anyone growing up in an Indian cultural milieu would not have heard it. The indigo jackal is as familiar to Indian childhood as are Little Red Rid- ing Hood or Snow White in the English-speaking world. The story has been told and retold by parents, grandparents, and teachers for centuries in all the major Indian languages, both classical and vernacular. Versions of the collec- tion in which it first appeared, the Pañcatantra, are still for sale at street stalls and on railway platforms all over India. The indigo jackal and other narratives from the collection have successfully colonized the contemporary media of television, CD, DVD, and the Internet. I will begin by sketching the history and development of the various families of Pañcatantra texts where the story of the indigo jackal first ap- peared, starting with Pu–rnabhadra’s. recension, the version on which this inquiry is based. -

DOI: 10.2478/aa-2020-0004 West – East: The semiotics of axiological convergences and divergences1 Ľubomír Plesník Professor Ľubomír Plesník works as a researcher and teacher at the Institute of Literary and Artistic Communication (from 1993 to 2003 he was the director of the Institute, and at present he is the head of the Department of Semiotic Studies within the Institute). His research deals primarily with problems of literary theory, methodology and semiotics of culture. Based on the work of František Miko, he has developed concepts relating to pragmatist aesthetics, reception poetics and existential semiotics with a special focus on comparison of Western and oriental epistemes (Pragmatická estetika textu 1995, Estetika inakosti 1998, Estetika jednakosti 2001, Tezaurus estetických výrazových kvalít 2011). Abstract: This study focuses on the verbal representation of life strategies in Vetalapanchavimshati, an old Indian collection of stories, which is part of Somadeva’s Kathasaritsagara. On the basis of the aspect of gain ~ loss, two basic life strategies are identified. The first one, the lower strategy, is defined by an attempt to obtain material gain, which is attained at the cost of a spiritual loss. The second one, the higher strategy, negates the first one (spiritual gain attained at the cost of a material loss) and it is an internally diversified series of axiological models. The core of the study explains the combinatorial variants which, in their highest positions, even transcend the gain ~ loss opposition. The final part of the study demonstrates the intersections between the higher strategy and selected European cultural initiatives (gnosis). 1. Problem definition, area of concern and material field Our goal is to reflect on the differences and intersections in the iconization of gains and losses in life between the Western and Eastern civilizations and cultural spheres. -
An Analysis of the Vānarinda Jātaka
THE PROMISE OF INTERPRETATION: AN ANALYSIS OF THE VĀNARINDA JĀTAKA by VISHMA KUNU (Under the Direction of Glenn Wallis) ABSTRACT My contention is that the Vānarinda Jātaka (VJ) is a specifically Buddhist narrative, being a strategic reworking of situations and characters common to Indian oral tradition. By way of a fluid, triple-layered construct that is experimental in nature, I support this claim by exploring the interpretive possibilities of the text. Chapter one functions as a philological groundwork, and is a translation of the Pāli text that highlights terminology with distinctive resonances in the Buddhist tradition. The second chapter reveals the ways in which the VJ is marked by generality, drawing out pan-Indian elements through an examination against excerpts from the Pañcatantra, considered nīti literature, and the Sundarakāa in Vālmīki’s Rāmāyaa, a Hindu work, all having pre-literate roots. In the third chapter, I offer a creative explication of the VJ, bringing to light the abundance of Buddhist allusions, and doctrinal references embedded within the narrative. Jataka Tales: Layers of Meaning from the Universal to the Personal Grade Level or Course Type: English, Social Studies, adaptable for grades 6 through 10 Overview of the Lesson Jataka Tales: Birth Stories of the Buddha are among the world’s oldest collection of stories. Many, about endearing animals who misbehave – and then learn to behave better – are appealing to children throughout the world. In this lesson students compare an Aesop’s fable to a Jataka Tale to see what they share in common. Students then learn about the Buddhist context of the tales, through which they deepen their appreciation of what makes a Jataka Tale unique. Finally, students approach a Jataka Tale through the meaning it held in the life of Noor Inayat Khan (1914-1944), whose classic collection Twenty Jataka Tales is still in print. She was a Muslim who worked as a covert agent for the British in Occupied France. She died at Dachau in 1944. In all three activities, students gain insight into what makes stories important in our lives. Learning Outcomes: • Identify stories by genre as fable, parable, folktale and fairy tale. • Decipher the moral of a story. • Understand Buddhist concepts (Ten Perfections, cycle of death and rebirth) • Learn about the life and appreciate the artistry of Noor Inayat Khan. They are aware of the space surrounding them. They are capable of self and non-self recognition and can take defined actions to mitigate and control diverse environmental stimuli. Ancient sages, who lived in an environment of trees and mountains perceived this truth of plants, precisely choose a few among them for their meditation, enlightenment and also actively promoted conservation of them. N,N-DMT is a psychoactive drug related with mysticism is present in both plants and humans. The study of plants associated with faith and tradition is known as Divine Botany. Lord Buddha was under Saraca asoca (Roxb.) De Wilde, Ficus religiosa (L.) and Shorea robusta (Gaertn.f.) during birth, enlightenment and liberation respectively. ‘Kshudraka Nikaya’ is a collection of minor Buddhist discourses which contains a book by name Buddhavamsha. It was translated into English as ‘The Great Chronicle of Buddhas’ by Ven. Bhadanta Vicittasarabhivamsa in 1992. Trees of enlightenment were termed as Wisdom trees. ‘The Great Chronicle of Buddhas’ listed wisdom trees of 25 past Buddha’s and future Maitreya Buddha. Wisdom trees of Tanhankara Buddha, Medhankara Buddha and Sharanamkara Buddha Bhagavan were not quoted in Buddhavamsha. -

LỊCH SỬ PHẬT VÀ BỒ TÁT (Phan Thượng Hải) Lịch sử Phật Giáo bắt đầu ở Ấn Độ. Từ Phật Giáo Nguyên Thủy sinh ra Phật Giáo Đại Thừa. Đại Thừa gọi Phật Giáo Nguyên Thủy là Tiểu Thừa. Sau đó Bí Mật Phật Giáo (Mật Giáo) thành lập nên Đại Thừa còn được gọi là Hiển Giáo. Mật Giáo truyền sang Trung Quốc lập ra Mật Tông và sau đó truyền sang Nhật Bản là Chơn Ngôn Tông (Chân Ngôn Tông).
