Her ties with the world are keen and powerful. Various names and reasons can be acquired for the same, like trade, politics, religion or social causes, etc. The history regarding is not much known or is so deeply forgotten that these relations are almost unbelievable and are mere fairytales, while they were being elaborated by the historians. As in the middle-ages the narrow-minded social beliefs ruled the Indian society, nobody was allowed to travel across the seas. If anyone tried it, the penalty was severe. Even in the years of colonial rule the self-confidence was totally lost and Indians were made to believe that they cannot be having any enriched civilisation ages before. According to great philosopher Hegel, India was rich in natural wealth, natural resources and especially it was a treasury of knowledge and wisdom.1 At the same time, India’s geographical centre position in the Indian Ocean was matched by her spiritual stature. Hence there was a competition amongst the countries to experience this wealth of India. Therefore many businessmen, historians, religious travellers and diplomats visited India. Thus she was never aloof from the world, but exchanged various types of relations with rest of the nations and cultures. In India meet the opposites, the abstract and the all-too elemental. The mathematical symbol of the zero was gifted by Indian mathematicians, which turned out revolutionary. At the same time it provided food for the people’s nostalgic yearnings with its legends and fairytales. For a long time the people of the West regarded India as an entity serving generations of the Indologists as the inspiration source. These Indologists were co-operating each other in their research. India became the goal of scientific pilgrimage for them. 1 vide Leifer, Walter. The ancient Indians carried their civilized culture, wherever they went. Though they never used any force to acquire new followers for their culture, their civilized culture and noble behaviour attracted many followers. Another speciality of this culture is that it allows everyone to follow his/her own culture, religious beliefs and rituals instead of forcing Indian culture on them. They believed in co-operation and tolerance. Thus, if you examine closely the theory of the good secular Muslim/Christian/Marxist, versus the bad/dangerous/fundamentalist Hindu, you are bound to come-up against several deep contradictions. Firstly, historically, Hindus have been the least fundamentalist people in the world : Never trying to impose their creed upon others by the sward, like Christianity or Islam, or even by the non-violent means of preaching, like Buddhism. Hinduism has also proved over the ages is infinite tolerance towards other religions giving refuge to all persecuted minorities in the world whether Parsis, Syrien, Christians, Jews or Tibetans today.2 Famous french journalist ‘Francois Gautier’ of ‘Asian Age’ has expressed his opinions in this manner, while explaining he specialities of Indian culture and religion. Historical traces of Indian culture in the world :3 The architectural remains in the world narrate the history. Same is the case of Lothal in Saurashtra, Gujarat. Lothal was a rich, well planned port since 2450 B. C., approximately at the same scale as Harappa or Mohenjodaro. 2 Gautier, Francois. Hindus and India. The first announcement of the present "International Seminar on Indology: Past, Present and Future" contains some challenging questions, which I would like to cite in context. We read there: Indology is, of recent, being looked at as an East-West encounter; philosophers of this century express their view that the time has come to reach beyond ‘occident’ and ‘orient’. In his study, India and Europe, W. Halbfass observes: In the modern planetary situation Eastern and Western ‘cultures’ can no longer meet one another as equal partners. They meet in a westernized world, under conditions shaped by Western ways of thinking. ... If this is true, is ‘European’ or ‘Western’ discourse the destiny of Indology? Will the Neo-Hindu attempts to ‘actualize’ ancient Indian teachings for the present succeed in establishing a stronger alternative? Will there ever be an ‘Indian discourse’ in Indology? Could such a discourse serve as the best solution for the present predicament? There is of course no way of denying that Indology was initially a European enterprise, carried out by European scholars, either in India or in Europe, either with the help of Indian pandits or without them. In this sense, Indology originally was characterized by ‘European’ or ‘Western’ discourse. Many of its themes and preconceptions were determined by the European context.     The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa Translated into English Prose from the Original Sanskrit Text. By Kisari Mohan Ganguli [1883-1896] TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE The object of a translator should ever be to hold the mirror upto his author. That being so, his chief duty is to represent so far as practicable the manner in which his author's ideas have been expressed, retaining if possible at the sacrifice of idiom and taste all the peculiarities of his author's imagery and of language as well. In regard to translations from the Sanskrit, nothing is easier than to dish up Hindu ideas, so as to make them agreeable to English taste. But the endeavour of the present translator has been to give in the following pages as literal a rendering as possible of the great work of Vyasa. To the purely English reader there is much in the following pages that will strike as ridiculous. Those unacquainted with any language but their own are generally very exclusive in matters of taste. Having no knowledge of models other than what they meet with in their own tongue, the standard they have formed of purity and taste in composition must necessarily be a narrow one. The translator, however, would ill-discharge his duty, if for the sake of avoiding ridicule, he sacrificed fidelity to the original. He must represent his author as he is, not as he should be to please the narrow taste of those entirely unacquainted with him. Mr. Pickford, in the preface to his English translation of the Mahavira Charita, ably defends a close adherence to the original even at the sacrifice of idiom and taste against the claims of what has been called 'Free Translation,' which means dressing the author in an outlandish garb to please those to whom he is introduced.

Received: 10 April 2017; Accepted: 16 May 2017; Published: 24 May 2017 Abstract: This paper problematizes the prevalent model of studying the “Neo-Vedanta”¯ of Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) principally in terms of an influx of Western ideas and nationalism. In particular, I demonstrate how scholarly constructions of “Neo-Vedanta”¯ consistently appeal to a high culture, staticized understanding of “traditional” Advaita Vedanta¯ as the alterity for locating Vivekananda’s “neo” or new teachings. In doing so, such studies ignore the diverse medieval and early modern developments in advaitic and Advaita Vedantic¯ traditions which were well-known to Vivekananda and other “Neo-Vedantins”.¯ Redressing this discursive imbalance, I propose that close attention to the way in which Swami Vivekananda drew from Indic texts opens up a wider frame for understanding the swami and the genealogy of his cosmopolitan theology. White calls the “practical past” (White 2014); that is, readings of the past that are ideologically pursued in the service of the present.

    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE SPANISH SHAHRAZ D AND HER ENTOURAGE: THE POWERS OF STORYTELLING WOMEN IN LIBRO DE LOS ENGAÑOS DE LAS MUJERES Zennia Désirée Hancock, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation Directed By: Associate Professor Carmen Benito -Vessels Department of Spanish and Portuguese The anonymous Libro de los engaños e asayamientos de las mugeres (LEM ) is a collection of exempla consisting of a frame tale and twenty -three interpolated tales. It forms part of the Seven Sages/Sindib d cycle , shares source material with the Arabic Alf layla wa layla (A Thousand and One Nights ), and was ordered translated from Arabic into Romance by Prince Fadrique of Castile in 1253. In the text, females may be seen as presented according to the traditional archetypes of Eve and the Virgin Mary; however, the ambivalence of the work allows that it be interpreted as both misogynous and not, which complicates the straightforward designation of its female characters as “good” and bad.” Given this, th e topos of Eva/Ave as it applies to this text is re -evaluated. The reassessment is effected by exploring the theme of ambivalence and by considering the female characters as hybrids of both western and eastern tradition. The primary female character of the text, dubbed the “Spanish Shahraz d,” along with other storytelling women in the interpolated tales, are proven to transcend binary paradigms through their intellect, which cannot be said to be inherently either good or evil, and which is expressed through speech acts and performances. Chapter I reviews the historical background of Alfonsine Spain and the social conditions of medieval women, and discusses the portr ayal of females in literature, while Chapter II focuses on the history of the exempla, LEM , and critical approaches to the text, and then identifies Bakhtin’s theory of the carnivalesque and Judith Butler’s speech act theory of injurious language as appropriate methodologies, explaining how both are nuanced by feminist perspectives.

    13 ARYAN PAST AND POST-COLONIAL PRESENT The polemics and politics of indigenous Aryanism Lars Martin Fosse It is legitimate to search for the Indo-Europeans on protohistoric ground, but this is a prolongation of the hypothesis, not a verification of it. The truth of the idea of “Indo-European” lies in the language and the religion, not in archaeology. (Bernard Sergent)1 On October 16, 1996, the Indian newspaper The Economic Times published an article, quoted on the Internet, about a conference entitled “Indologists discount Aryan influx theory.” The first paragraph reads: A conference of over 300 Indologists here has rejected the Aryan Invasion Theory. The conference on “Revisiting Indus-Saraswati Age and Ancient India,” attended by scholars all over the world, was aimed at correcting the “dis- torted Hindu history,” according to Ms Reeta Singh, one of the organisers. “Recent archaeological discoveries have fully established that there was a continuous evolution of civilization on the Indian subcontinent from about 5000 BC, which remained uninterrupted through 1000 BC. This leaves no scope whatsoever to support an Aryan invasion theory,” a resolution at the conference said. It explained that the term Arya in Indian literature has no racial or linguistic connotations. It was used in the noble sense. (The Economic Times, October 16, 1996) This remarkable plebiscite shows to what degree the question of Indo-Aryan origins has become politicized. Normally scholarly questions are not made the subject of popular vote.
