In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the majority of Honours degrees are 3 years in duration with specialisation from the outset, or 4 years for undergraduate integrated Masters
In Scotland, the majority of degrees are one year longer, i.e.
4 years (Bachelors degree with Honours) or 5 years for the Integrated Masters MChem, MEng, MEarthSci, MInf, MMath, MPhys
This is because Scottish high schools do not follow an A-Level system; school students can go to university one year sooner.
This means that Scottish degrees have lots of flexibility and choice of subjects to study in early years, with specialisation by third year. Often this gives students the opportunity to sample several subjects before choosing in which to specialise
