STOCKS TO WATCH by Erik Ipsen Markets await verdict on AIG’s vault-load of subprime securities THIS WEEK, investors will find out if the globe’s biggest insurer will lay the world’s largest egg. Analysts predict American International Group will show a 6% gain in third-quarter profit. But there is a chance the company, which also has the downright dangerous distinction of ranking as one of the largest holders of subprime-related assets, will have to write down their value. Estimates of the hit range as high as $10 billion. With its hapless shares trading about where they did four years ago, Time Warner needs to come up with something a bit meatier than its expected posting this week of a 25% jump in quarterly profits. A departure date for CEO Richard Parsons would be nice. So, too, would news of a spinoff of AOL, or maybe the company’s cable-TV unit. All have been rumored in recent days. Stay tuned. Last week, the shares fell 3%. Sure, is a heck of an institution, able to pull huge profits out of the jaws of the meanest markets, as it did in the third quarter. But with conditions worsening and analysts forecasting a string of earnings declines into next year, the logic of Goldman hitting a new 52- week high last week looked shaky. Keep in mind that five years ago, in the last bear market, Goldman’s shares traded for less than $70. charts: grange paul

JOE TORRE ON THE ART OF MANAGING “Trust. I couldn’t manage without it.”

“Management styles run the gamut. From intimidation to compliments to coddling. You have to know your people. I learned long ago what motivated me. It was tossing me a glove and trusting I’d do the job. It’s the same in any business. Give talented people an opportunity, and trust they’ll take advantage of it.” Trust. It’s one of the reasons J.H. Cohn excels in long-term client relationships. Trust us.
