Reflexive (Present Tense) Notes

Review: Direct In a previous lesson we learned about when to use DIRECT Object Pronouns. We learned that Direct Objects RECEIVE the action and SUBJECTS do the action.

Let’s look at a quick review:

Bob et Sue mangent le sandwich.  Ils le mangent. (They eat it.)  Nicole et toi regardez la télé.  VOUS LA REGARDEZ (Y’all watch it.)

Present Tense Reflexive Verbs: Today we are going to look at actions that are REFLEXIVE. This means that the person RECEIVING the action is also the person DOING the action. Reflexive

Verbs are a special group of verbs where the action is usually done to SELF and

NOT someone ELSE. These verbs require a RELEXIVE to describe the action.

Let’s take a look at some examples and translate: Je me regarde.  I’M LOOKING AT MYSELF.

Tu te brosses les dents.  YOU ARE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH.

Il se réveille à 7h.  HE WAKES UP AT 7 O’CLOCK.

What are Reflexive Pronouns / Reflexive Verbs?

Notice that these reflexive pronouns are like Direct Object Pronouns except that they have to

MATCH the person. You can think of it as a “DOP” that is acting like a

MIRROR reflecting back at the person. Some verbs are ALWAYS reflexive and some verbs can be turned into reflexive verbs. You can USUALLY know if a is reflexive when you look it up because it will have a SE or S’ before the .  se réveiller  TO WAKE UP s’amuser  TO HAVE FUN

There are 3 groups / types of reflexive verbs:

1. HABITUAL action reflexives: Describe one’s DAILY ROUTINE a. Je m’habille à 9h.  I GET DRESSED AT 9 O’CLOCK. 2. IDIOMATIC reflexives: Describe how one is FEELING or DOING.

 Je m’amuse aujourd’hui.  I’M HAVING FUN TODAY.  NOTE: idiomatic means: NATIVE TO THE LANGUAGE so it’s hard to literally translate.

3. RECIPROCAL reflexives: Describe actions one does with SOMEONE ELSE.

a. Nous nous aimons.  WE LOVE EACH OTHER.

4

Using Reflexive Pronouns / Reflexive Verbs: Present Tense

Reflexive Verbs are conjugated like all verbs except the has to go in front of the conjugation to MIRROR / MATCH the person (SUBJECT).

Below, is the chart of reflexive pronouns.

ME/M’ myself __NOUS__ ourselves

__TE/T’__ yourself _VOUS___ yourselves / yourself

__SE/S’___ himself __SE/S’___ themselves

__SE/S’___ herself __SE/S’___ themselves

*NOTE: The pronouns ABOVE the line are UNIVERSAL pronouns.

This means that they never change as we learn different types of pronouns.

Practice: Look at the the chart below carefully to see a reflexive verb conjugated in all its forms.

I’m looking at myself.  Je me regarde.  We are looking at us. Nous _nous__ regardons.  You’re looking at yourself. Tu _te_ regardes.  You all are looking at yourselves. Vous _vous_ regardez.  He’s looking at himself. Il _se__ regarde.  They are looking at themselves. Ils _se__ regardent.  She’s looking at herself. Elle _se_ regarde.  They are looking at themselves. Elles _se_ regardent.

Practice Conjugating Reflexive Verbs in the PRESENT TENSE: se laver: TO WASH UP *INSERT THE REFLEXIVE PRONOUN THAT MIRRORS THE SUBJECT.

Je ______LAVE Nous ______LAVONS

Tu ______LAVES Vous ______LAVEZ

Il ______LAVE Ils ______LAVENT

Elle ______LAVE Elles ______LAVENT

*Notice that the pronoun MATCHES the person talking. This is how we know that the action is NOT being done to SOMEONE else.

Reflexive Verbs in the NEGATIVE: Present Tense

Because Reflexive Pronouns are placed BEFORE the conjugated verb, when you make the sentence negative, you place the pronoun within the “ sandwich”.

PRONOUN CONJUGATED VERB
