It is the only museum of its kind in that exhibits authentic slavery artifacts which include hundreds of shackles, chains, coffles, branding irons and other forms of punishing ironware.

Learn about American History from the House that lived it! Many escaped slaves found Philadelphia to be a sanctuary. Our interactive tour continues the journey along the Underground Railroad into the home of Abolitionist William , his wife Mary, their son Judge , and their indentured slave Cornelia Wells. It was here at the historic Belmont Mansion that many escaped slaves were able to hide safely, and so the mansion became a well-known stop on the Underground Railroad. Cornelia Wells was able to buy her freedom and the freedom of her daughter Jane. Additionally, she became a very successful business woman, selling her famous ginger beer to weary travelers. Cornelia continued to work for the Peters family and was instrumental in helping many runaways find a safe passage into Freedom.
