ITINERARY - High Andes Adventure 2016

Meals Included: B= Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner

01 September. (D1) Arrive into Cochabamba, Bolivia. Mike & Angela will be there to greet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in Cochabamba.(Overnight, Cochabamba)

02 September. (D2) Misicuni loop. An easy four-hour ride through the mountains surrounding Cochabamba. Everyone gets a chance to get comfortable on his or her bike, as well as the riding conditions in Bolivia. It is also a chance to experience some high altitude, as we will climb above 3600metres. End the day with a group dinner. (Overnight, Cochabamba) B,L,D. 60km

03 September. (D3) Cochabamba – . We’ll set out directly from the hotel and head out on the highway. Climb the first of many passes at 4000m above sea level and the highest being 4735mtrs. Over high passes with the snow capped Andes surrounding. Descend to Quime, through the steep glacial valley to our overnight stay. (Overnight, Quime) B,L,D. 313km

04 September. (D4) Quime – . Continue our descent, now on 100% dirt/gravel roads, down into the Amazon Basin. Our journey will ascend and descend several valleys with steep drop offs – a pre curser for tomorrow!. We overnight at 1600metres above sea level. (Overnight, Chulumani) B,L,D 200km

05 September. (D5) Chulumani – . Traversing the mountain, by gravel and dirt roads, to our overnight destination of Coroico. They make good pizza here and it is a lively tourist town. You might spot some descendants of the African slaves who stand out due to their very dark complexion. We should arrive around 1.00pm - leaving time for those keen to try out one of the world’s longest zip-lines (aka -flying fox) or just a stroll around this pretty town. 06 September . (D6) Coroico – Oruro. Enjoy the awesome winding and twisting "Death Road" road as we climb back up to the Altiplano / La Cumbre. We'll skirt around then it's an easy ride cruising along the Altiplano (High Plains) on tarmac to the town of Oruro. We remain at 3700m above sea level. During the following days we will continue to climb to higher elevations so it's a good reminder to keep taking your high altitude pills. (Overnight, Oruro) B,L,D. 325km

07 September. (D7) Oruro – Tahua. A long day, the first 150km on sealed road then the rest along a rough but spectacular road. There will be Llama, Alpaca, and their shy relative, Vicunya to see and Wild West looking towns along the way. Eventually we’ll catch a glimpse of the Salar de Uyuni (Salt Plains) the world's largest salt flats at 10,000 square kms. It contains 50-70% of the worlds Lithium reserves and is a breeding ground for several species of Pink Flamingos. Spend the night at the "Salt Hotel" which is constructed from solid blocks of salt. 08 September. (D8) Tahua - Uyuni. Ride across the spectacular salt plains, with endless photo opportunities, and experience the sensation of freedom. Picnic lunch on the salt plains. Visit the historic train cemetery on the outskirts of Uyuni town. (Overnight Uyuni) B,L,D. 110km.

09 September. (D9) Uyuni – Tupiza. A full day’s ride on a remote road enjoying a change in scenery, from the flat Altiplano to a countryside of canyons, gorges, and cactus tress which are typical of the wild west in Bolivia. Take note of the varying colours of the surrounding hills, which indicate the rich and varied mineral deposits. This is Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid country. (Overnight, Tupiza) B, L, D. 215km

10 September. (D10) Tupiza – Potosi. A full day’s ride on a remote road enjoying a change in scenery, from the flat Altiplano to a countryside of canyons, gorges, and cactus tress which are typical of the wild west in Bolivia. It's a easy ride, at high altitude, on paved roads to Potosi. Potosi has some great stuff to see and do. The city’s grand churches and the ornate colonial architecture make any visit is a real delight. Potosi is the highest city in Bolivia at an altitude of 4090mts above sea level. We'll have a late lunch in Potosi then there's the optional silver minting museum tour. (Overnight, Potosi) B,L,D. 250km

11 September. (D11) Potosi – Sucre. A late start allowing us to see more of Potosi, or an optional tour into the "depths of hell" - also known as the tin mines. Lunch in Potosi before our early afternoon departure and short ride to Sucre. Enjoy “The White City” of Sucre in the afternoon. Sucre is a World Heritage Site and is the constitutional capital of Bolivia. (Overnight, Sucre) B,L,D. 160km

12 September. (D12) Sucre - Torotoro. Canyons, Caves , Waterfalls and Dinosaur relics feature in Torotoro National Park one of Bolivia's most beautiful. Torotoro town still maintains its colonial charm and architecture. A longer day riding due to the gravel roads and dry river beds which we need to ride to get to this remote location. (Overnight, Torotoro) B,L,D. 200km

13 September. (D13) Torotoro - Cochabamba. Our final day on the bikes. We’ll start with a quick look at what Torotoro is most famous for – dinosaur footprints and steep sided canyons that look like they’ve been cut with a skil saw. We’ll follow an amazing cobblestone road that winds its way down the mountainside to the river valley. Ride through a desert like landscape filled with thorn trees and cactus plants. Once we cross the river we’ll begin to climb again until we are up and out in the Cochabamba valley again. We expect to arrive in Cochabamba by mid afternoon. Enjoy a well deserved Pisco Sour cocktail and a sumptuous group dinner. Overnight in Cochabamba. B,L,D. 160km.

14 September. (D14) Bolivia - Home. Breakfast in Cochabamba, then catch the morning flight to La Paz/Santa Cruz and continuing to your final destination.
