ANTHONY DAVIS has received interna­ tional recognition for his compositions as well as for virtuoso performances, both as a solo pianist and leading his ensemble Episteme. Dear'Friends: The once-bustling theater district at the eastern edge of downtown Brooklyn is coming back to life agaIn, bringing a very· different kind of arts and entertainment to' the area.· In an exciting project sponsored and facilitated by the Brooklyn Academy of Music-Local Development Corporation, now-abandoned 'structures in'the neigh- borhood anchored by·· the'Brooklyn Academy-known as' "The Academy District"- will undergo renovation and rehabilitation in order to provide new and necessary work space for a number of established' arts groups. In the spring of 1986, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians will become ~ne of the first tenants of the Strand Performing Arts Studio, a new arts complex which is being created at the site of the old Strand Theatre, two blocks from BAM. The historic' movie theatre Was 'built in 1911 in'the grand and lavish tradition of the time. And now, an effort has begun to renovate the Strand once again to its place as a center for the arts. WhenNew York City's :Public DevelopmentCorporationcompletes its structural.work on the building's exterior and common areas,. the,Dean Dance and Music Foundation will begin extensive reconstruction of our section of the complex to meet the requirements of a vital and expanding dance company. When our re,!~v~ti0!1sarecompleted, the new space,··.will house a much needed 50' by 50' rehearsal studiowitfi seating for 99 for.informal showings, ·as well as expandeQ, o(ficeand conference'areas, two separate and fully-equipped dressing rooms and 'bathrooms for the"artists, an archival/video room, and' a storage space for technical and costume materiflls. The Dean Dance and Mu'sic Foundation is proud to be a part of the effort to, culturally re-vitalize this once-thriving area.
