UNIFORM HANDBOOK 2019 - 2020 ELC & RECEPTION - YEAR 12 UPDATES TO THE WILDERNESS PE - SEPTEMBER 2019 After consultation with staff and , Wilderness PE , track pants and polo tops are being updated for all year levels.

There will be no changes to the rugby , PE , spray , fleece jacket, fleece vest, house polo tops or bathers.

A transition period of just over 2 years will apply for all new PE uniform items and the discontinued PE uniform may be worn until the end of 2021.

All girls should be wearing the new PE uniform from Term 1, 2022.

SHORTS AND BIKE SHORTS • New grey stretch microfibre shorts, will replace our existing blue shorts for all girls, ELC to Year 12. These shorts may be worn as an alternative to the current blue PE skirt. Junior sizes will be available Term 1 2020. • Grey bike shorts, will replace black bike shorts. Grey bike shorts are to be worn under the existing blue PE skirt, and are also used for athletics.

TRACK PANTS • A new slim legged grey stretch microfibre track pant with elastic ankle will replace the existing blue microfibre track pant. The new microfibre track pants will be available in children’s size 8 - 14 and women’s sizes 8 - 24. • A new grey track pant in a thick durable fabric with double knee and elastic ankles (children’s size 2 - 8) will replace the current ELC and Lower Junior blue track pants.

POLO TOPS Due to the introduction of grey shorts and track pants, the blue polo (Reception to Year 2) and white polo top (Years 2 to 12) will be updated to include grey piping and a grey stripe on the collar.

SECOND HAND UNIFORM As a result of these changes, the Uniform Shop will no longer accept discontinued PE uniform items.

2 UNIFORM LIST - EARLY LEARNING CENTRE Uniform is compulsory for all girls in the Mamie House (3 year olds) and Annie House (4 year olds). The uniform described below is also worn as the PE uniform for Reception and Year 1.

SUMMER (Terms 1 and 4) • Grey PE shorts with white crest • Blue short sleeve polo with grey piping (ELC-Year 1) • Wilderness Rugby jumper • Blue sun • Brown school (worn without ) • Predominantly white joggers (no brightly coloured trim or glitter) or • Wilderness PE socks or plain white socks

WINTER (Terms 2 and 3) • Blue long sleeve with grey piping (ELC-Year 1) • Wilderness grey track pants with white crest • Rugby jumper • Fleece jacket (optional) • Plain white skivvy - ELC only (optional) • Predominantly white joggers (no brightly coloured trim or glitter) • Wilderness PE socks or plain white socks

OTHER ITEMS • Blue sun hat (all year round) • Library bag (also needed for Reception to Year 2) • Own small back pack or Wilderness blue PE bag (optional) but no school bags please • Hair should be tied back with hair coloured elastics and ribbon should be white or blue (available from the Uniform Shop)

6 UNIFORM CODE • School uniform is compulsory at Wilderness School and all students are expected to take pride in their appearance and grooming. The correct uniform is to be worn in its entirety to and from School. No additional items are to be worn at any time during the School day. All uniform items are expected to be named and in good condition. • In general, summer uniform is worn during Terms 1 and 4 and winter uniform during Terms 2 and 3. Girls may choose to wear their summer uniform in the first and last two weeks of Term 2. There is no restriction on temperature.

UNIFORM • The length of the summer dress, winter skirt and pinafore must be worn to the knee or longer. Girls will be required to lengthen or replace their uniform with one of correct length if it is too short. • Summer Uniform: Summer dress, white hat and black school shoes with long or short white socks, (Reception to Year 12), or (brown sandals Reception to year 6). Wilderness blazer (Years 3 to 12) is optional in summer unless required for a School excursion or other formal occasion. Girls in Reception to Year 2 do not require a blazer. • Winter Uniform: Reception to Year 3: Pinafore, Peter Pan blouse, tab tie, plain brown jumper and black Mary Jane style school shoes with chocolate brown socks or tights. Years 4 to 6: Wilderness blazer, skirt, plain brown jumper, over blouse and crossover tie. Years 7 to 12: Wilderness blazer, skirt, cable jumper, over blouse and regular tie.

FORMAL OCCASIONS/EXCURSIONS • Girls are expected to wear the full School uniform, including the Wilderness blazer with shoes (not sandals) and long socks (not tights) when representing the School at formal occasions. Crossover ties (Years 4 to 6) must be worn on all formal occasions during winter. On formal occasions the jumper is not worn under the blazer. Excursions are viewed as a formal occasion. Girls will not be allowed to attend excursions unless the correct uniform is worn. Long socks should be pulled up.

BLAZER • Wilderness blazer (Years 3 to 12) is optional in summer unless required for a School excursion or other formal occasion. The School blazer must always be worn to and from School with winter uniform, on School excursions and formal occasions. Girls in Reception to Year 2 do not require a blazer though may purchase one for warmth if they so wish. Other and are not permitted. A blazer is not required to be worn to and from School with summer uniform.

JUMPER • The plain brown and brown cable jumpers are worn all year round. The jumper may not be worn as the outer garment to and from School, but may be worn under the blazer. However, on formal occasions, the jumper is not worn under the blazer. The jumper may be worn as the outer garment within the School grounds. • The plain jumper is worn from Reception to Year 6. The cable jumper is worn from Years 7 to 12. Year 6 is a transition period from plain jumper to a cable jumper. Girls in year 6 may wear the cable jumper if they out grow their plain jumper.

PINAFORE OR SKIRT (YEAR 3) • Generally, girls in Year 3 wear the pinafore until the end of Term 3 of that year. However, if she outgrows her pinafore, needs to pass it on to a younger sibling or is a new to the School, a skirt with over blouse and crossover tie may be worn. The skirt, over blouse and crossover tie are worn from Year 4. The Peter Pan blouse is worn with the pinafore only, and not worn with the skirt.

7 TIES • The fabric tab tie is worn with the Peter Pan blouse and pinafore from Reception to the end of Year 3. Cross-over ties are worn with the skirt and over blouse to Year 6. The standard tie may be worn as an alternative to the cross-over tie for girls in Years 4 to 6. Standard ties are worn for Years 7 to 12 with winter uniform. Year 12 girls may wear the Year 12 tie as an alternative to the brown standard tie.

RAIN COATS • Rain coats are required for Reception to Year 2 and may be worn as the outer garment to and from School in Terms 2 and 3. Other rain coats, coats or parkas are not acceptable.

HATS • The white summer hat must be worn to and from School with the summer uniform and on excursions during summer. Girls in ELC to Year 6 are expected to wear the blue sun hat during play periods and blue sun hat or blue ‘Wildy’ PE cap during PE lessons. Our policy is ‘No Hat, No Play’ for all girls in the junior School. Girls will be asked to sit in the shade if they do not wear their hat. • Girls in year 7-12 are required to wear the ‘Wildy’ PE cap during Physical Education or sport.

HEAD AND SPECIAL UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS • A Head scarf may be worn if it is required for religious reasons. Head scarves worn with summer uniform must be in either Wilderness Blue or White; and head scarves worn with winter uniform, must be Wilderness blue or dark brown. Please speak to the Uniform Shop Manager for further details. • Students wearing headscarves must wear the official school sunhat (R-Year 6) over their head scarf when outdoors during Term 1 and 4, or the Wilderness cap as required during Physical Education or Sport (Years 7 to 12). • Please discuss any other special uniform requirements with the Uniform Shop Manager.

LONG-SLEEVED ALTERNATIVES • Requests for the checked long-sleeved alternative summer dress or white polo shirt must be made in writing to the Principal, outlining the exceptional circumstances for consideration and approval. The checked long-sleeve summer dress and polo incurs additional costs and time frames which will be confirmed by the Uniform Shop.

PE UNIFORM • PE lessons: All girls from Reception to Year 10 attend PE lessons. Girls in Years 11 and year 12 will not require a PE uniform unless they are participating in competition sport or studying SACE PE. PE shorts may be worn by all students to Year 12 and are compulsory from Reception to Year 4. The PE skirt or shorts may be worn from Year 5 onwards. Grey, short leg bike shorts are worn under the skirt and are not to be worn on their own. Girls in Reception to Year 2 wear their PE uniform to School all day on the days they have PE lessons. • Sport Practice: Girls in Years 4 to 12 may not arrive at School or leave School at the end of the day in sport uniform except when they have sport practice before or after School. If girls in Years 4 to 12 have PE after recess and sport practice after School they may change into their sport uniform at recess time and remain in their sport uniform for the rest of the day.

SCHOOL BAGS • Wilderness School bags are compulsory. The Uniform Shop stocks back packs in three sizes and one size trolley bag. School sport bags are also available but not compulsory.

8 COMMEMORATIVE TOPS • Tops that have been designed for a School trip or sporting event, for example, are not to be worn beyond the particular event for which they were designed. • The cream Year 12 jumper may be worn at any time with the formal School uniform as an alternative to the brown jumper. • Year 12 ‘’ may be worn at School only with agreement from the Principal. These tops may not be worn to and from School or outside the School at any time with School uniform. They must not be worn to PE lessons or to sport practices. However, they may be worn with casual clothes at any time.

HAIR • Hair below the collar in length should be tied back. Hair styles must be kept simple and tidy and should be age appropriate. Whilst the School recognises that hairstyles are a matter of individual style and taste, all students are required to keep their hair neat and clean and unobtrusive (e.g., no dreadlocks). Hair accessories for winter uniform are blue, brown or uniform fabric, and for summer uniform, blue, white or uniform fabric. Hair coloured elastics or combs are acceptable. A wide range of hair accessories is available from the Uniform Shop. Hair colouring is not acceptable for primary aged students. Hair colouring, if used by older students, should be natural looking and subtle, i.e., no more than two (2) shades different from its natural colour.

JEWELLERY/COSMETICS/TATTOOS • : No jewellery is to be worn with School uniform. However, one pair (one in each ear lobe) of plain silver, gold or pearl studs no larger than 5mm in diameter or standard size sleepers are permitted. Body Piercing is not permitted. Watches are encouraged and must be plain with a silver/gold or neutral band. Makeup: (including, but not limited to, blush, eyeliner, eye shadow, foundation, lipstick, and mascara) is not permitted. On written advice from a medical practitioner, a student will be allowed to wear a light covering of prescribed foundation that matches her skin tone. Nail Polish: Coloured nail polish is not permitted. Tattoos: Permanent and temporary tattoos are not permitted. Smoking and the chewing of gum are forbidden at School, and in School uniform.

CYCLING TO SCHOOL • Girls cycling to School must wear an approved safety . A girl cycling to School will be excused from wearing her blazer but will require a parental note in her diary, to be signed by her Head of School. If there is an excursion she will be required to bring her blazer.

NAMING YOUR UNIFORM • It is a requirement of the school that all uniform items are clearly named. Iron-on labels, stitched on labels and permanent marker are all acceptable.

9 INTERSCHOOL SPORT • SPORT TRAININGS and MATCHES. Girls may not play sport in track pants, Wilderness logo black leggings, spray jacket, rugby jumper, fleece vest or jacket. These garments are worn before or after matches. Captains and coaches should ensure this high standard of presentation of our teams. Other items of ‘Special ’ e.g. Realise, Boarders, Year 12, Generations in Jazz, Lacrosse or Rowing tops are not to be worn, unless it is for that specific sport or event. • Junior School girls up to Year 6, should wear their regular PE uniform for inter school sport and trainings. • All girls must wear the following uniform to all Wilderness School sports trainings; • White PE polo, Blue PE skirt/shorts or Wilderness leggings (no other leggings permitted) or Blue PE tracksuit pants. • Rugby jumper and/or spray jacket. • White Wilderness visor or Blue Wilderness cap for on water rowing sessions. • Blue Wilderness cap is encouraged for all outdoor summer sports. • For warm-up, and cool down activities, the School rugby jumper, fleece vest, fleece jacket or spray jacket and tracksuit pants/ Wilderness Logo Back Leggings are the only acceptable forms of additional clothing to be worn.

10 SUMMER SPORTS ATHLETICS & CROSS COUNTRY • Wilderness white PE shirt and blue PE skirt/shorts. Girls can wear grey bike shorts when competing.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL • Wilderness School bathers or water polo bathers which can be purchased from the uniform shop.

WATER POLO • Wilderness Water Polo bathers which can be purchased from the uniform shop. • Girls are to wear white PE top and blue PE skirt or summer dress to and from the pool. • Wilderness Water Polo will be supplied for games.

BASKETBALL • Senior AB and Middle AB teams Wilderness School playing top and shorts - supplied by the Sport Department. (returned at the end of season). • Senior C and Middle C teams are to wear white PE shirt and blue PE skirt/shorts.

TENNIS • Wilderness white PE shirt and blue PE skirt/shorts.

ROWING • Wilderness Rowing Zootsuit and Compression top, which can be purchased from the uniform shop. • Wilderness white visor or Wilderness blue cap. • For training only the Wilderness Rowing may be worn to and from trainings and regattas.

VOLLEYBALL • Wilderness PE short and plain grey shorts or bike shorts.

TOUCH FOOTBALL • Wilderness touch singlet supplied be the Sports Department (returned at the end of season) and Wilderness grey shorts or bike shorts.

11 WINTER SPORTS FOOTBALL • Wilderness and shorts supplied by the Sport Department (returned at the end of season). • Long blue socks, which can be purchased from the Wilderness Uniform Shop.

HOCKEY • Wilderness School playing top and skirt supplied by the Sport Department (returned at the end of season). • Long blue socks, which can be purchased from the Wilderness Uniform Shop. • The School rugby jumper or spray jacket can be worn over the top for warm up activities.

LACROSSE • Wilderness School playing top supplied by the Sport Department (returned at the end of season) and blue PE skirt, with wilderness short white PE socks. • The School rugby jumper or spray jacket can be worn over the top for warm up activities.

NETBALL • Wilderness School netball dress, which can be purchased from the Wilderness Uniform Shop. • The School rugby jumper or spray jacket can be worn over the top for warm up activities.

September 2019 SALE OF SECOND HAND UNIFORM • Second Hand Uniform is accepted on a consignment basis and is processed four times per year. Once goods are sold, 60% of the selling price will be credited to school fees accounts for current families. Former families will receive a direct deposit into their nominated bank account, or a cheque will be posted. Payments for the sale of second hand goods for split families with current students will be credited to school fees accounts, unless otherwise requested on the second hand form. • The Uniform Shop accepts summer uniform from Week 5 in Term 3 until Week 5 in Term 1, and accepts winter uniform from week 5 in Term 1 until week 5 in Term 3. PE uniform, ELC uniform, and jumpers are accepted at all times. • We do not accept; discontinued uniform, shoes, socks, tights or bike shorts. Please note, the Uniform Shop no longer accepts DZ brand fleece and ‘Scuttle’ or ‘Scuttle by Marie Brereton’ labelled , with the exception of blazers or in excellent condition. • The Second Hand Uniform form can be downloaded from the Uniform Shop page on the Wilderness web site, http://www.wilderness.com.au/school-services/uniform-shop or collected from the Uniform Shop. Please complete the Second Hand Uniform form with your signature and date, and leave it with the garments you would like us to sell for you. Second Hand garments may be left at the Uniform Shop or at the school’s Front Office. • Families leaving the school and former families may bring second hand goods in at any time throughout the year. • Please ensure that all garments are freshly laundered, and blazers, skirts and tunics are dry- cleaned. • We will not accept any garments that are very thin, frayed, worn, or with stains, tears, holes or with obvious repairs. A good way to judge is to send garments that you would be happy to purchase. • The Uniform Shop Manager reserves the right to dispose of any garments considered unsuitable for sale. Uniform Shop staff will determine a selling price for all goods. • You may choose to donate the proceeds of the sale of your second hand goods to the School, donations are gratefully accepted. • After 12 months, second hand goods that have not sold will be considered a donation to the School.

BOARDERS UNIFORM SHOP PURCHASES • Boarders can purchase items from the Uniform Shop on account. Itemised accounts from the Uniform Shop will be posted to parents on a monthly basis and are separate from your School fees account. • Payment of Uniform Shop account is 30 days; the shop accepts Visa Card, MasterCard, cheques and direct deposit. Details are included on your monthly statement. • Accounts more than 60 days overdue will attract a fee of $20. No account purchases may be made while an account is overdue. • If desired, parents may determine a financial limit for their daughter’s account. Please discuss this with the Uniform Shop Manager. • Parents may also choose to leave credit card details with the Uniform Shop for payment of uniform purchases. These details are stored in the safe. • The Uniform Shop is unable to offer credit if accounts remain outstanding for 90 days or more.

HOLIDAY TRADING The Uniform Shop is closed for normal trading during the school holidays. However, holiday opening times will be published on the uniform shop page of the Wilderness School website.

PHONE SALES If you are unable to get into the Uniform Shop during opening hours, purchases may be made over the phone with your credit card. Please give the Uniform Shop a call to discuss your requirements.

NEW STUDENTS All new students will be invited to make an appointment for a uniform fitting in November.
