2017-2018 Parent-Student Handbook excerpt School Uniform and Standards for Personal Appearance and Grooming As authorized by state law and the LPS charter, students are required to wear uniforms to school. Leadership Prep’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, to prevent disruption, and to minimize safety hazards. Students must come to school cleanly and neatly groomed, and wearing clothing that will not be a health or safety hazard to the student or others and that will not distract from the educational atmosphere of the school. Students are required to arrive in a proper school uniform every day. Parents must provide their student(s) with the required uniform, except in the case of educationally disadvantaged students as provided in the Texas Education Code. LPS may provide a uniform for economically disadvantaged students. A request for school assistance for purchasing uniforms must be made in writing to the Principal and include evidence of the inability to pay. Further details are available in the Principal’s office. A parent may choose for his or her student(s) to be exempted from the requirement of wearing a uniform if the parent provides a written statement that, as determined by the Board of Directors, states a bona fide religious or philosophical objection to the requirement. Uniform Information and Policy To maintain a consistent appearance among students, LPS has selected certain acceptable types of clothing which may be purchased through Academic Outfitters, Wal-Mart, Target, Old Navy, Land’s End, JC Penney, or a variety of other sources. Please see the Academic Outfitters information and pictures on our website to see approved styles even if you don’t purchase through them. A few pictures are included here to help. Short and long sleeve shirts must be white or navy collared shirts. Shirts must be solid in color with NO Shirts K-4 insignia or logos except for the LPS logo. If a long sleeve undershirt is worn under a short sleeve shirt, it must be solid white or navy. Short and long sleeve shirts must be white, navy or forest green collared shirts. Shirts must be solid in color Shirts 5-10 with no insignia or logos except for the LPS logo. If a long sleeve undershirt is worn under a short sleeve shirt, it must be solid white, navy or forest green. Pants and shorts for all students (and capris for girls) are to be khaki-colored or navy and made of cotton twill material (no yoga, cargo, joggers, or athletic-type Pants pants). A solid black or brown belt must be worn if there are belt loops. Girls’ shorts must be no shorter than four inches above the floor when kneeling. 2017-2018 Parent-Student Handbook excerpt Girls may also wear khaki or navy skirts/skorts, and girls in K-4 may wear khaki or navy jumpers as well. The Skirts/Skorts/ length must be no shorter than four inches above the Jumpers floor when kneeling, and solid navy modesty shorts are to be worn underneath skirts/skorts/jumpers at all times. If socks are worn, only solid white or navy socks may be Socks/Tights worn. Girls may also wear solid white or navy tights or leggings to the ankle underneath skirts/skorts/jumpers. Shoes must be worn at all times. Only closed-toed, closed-heel shoes are allowed. Shoes must be predominantly white, black, brown, grey/silver or navy. Shoes No light up shoes are allowed. Shoes with shoelace holes must have shoelaces. Shoelace color must be white, navy or neutral. No flip-flops, clogs, crocs or sandals are allowed. Tennis shoes must be worn in PE. Sweaters or jackets worn indoors must be in keeping with the school’s color scheme – solid white, navy or Outerwear khaki (or forest green in grades 5 and up) - or black. They must not have any lettering or logos other than the LPS logo. Hair must be clean and neat. Hairstyles or unnatural hair colors that in the judgment of the Principal cause a disruption are not allowed. Clothes must be in good repair and clean. Clothing that is torn, ragged, frayed or pants with holes are not permitted. Head coverings, including hats, caps, visors, bandannas, and stocking caps, are not to be worn indoors. Sunglasses also are not to be worn indoors. Appropriate undergarments must be worn at all times. 2017-2018 Parent-Student Handbook excerpt Girls: a. Make-up must be modest if worn. b. Nail polish must be modest. c. Earrings must be modest. d. Shirts/blouses must be tucked in. Boys: a. Hair must be kept trimmed and no longer than the top of the shoulders in the back. b. Earrings may not be worn during the day or at school functions. c. Shirts must be tucked in. Uniforms may not be embellished with sequins, rhinestones, sparkles, etc. The only customization allowed will be an embroidered name or monogram in navy, white, black, or gray thread only on the left front pocket area of jackets. Students in grades 5-10 are allowed to wear an LPS t-shirt each Friday with their uniform pants. The Principal may occasionally designate casual clothing days (uniform free). Guidelines for such days will be communicated in advance. The Principal possesses final discretion in determining appropriate dress and appearance. Failure to adhere to established dress and grooming codes will result in disciplinary action. Secondary students not in dress code will be loaned sweat pants, shirts and/or belts to wear by the school for the day so they will not miss instruction. 5th-10th Grade PE Uniform Middle School and High School students will dress out for PE class. They should have black gym shorts and a gray t-shirt that is long enough to be tucked in. These can be purchased by parents at any store. LPS may provide PE clothes for economically disadvantaged students.
