05 Preface Seas and Oceans 06 Programme 18 Profiles of Participants 26 Organisation (DAAD / Tour Guide) The seas and oceans form the largest habitat on our planet. They influence our global 27 Index of Participants climate and hold valuable resources. How can these ocean resources be used in a sustainable manner? What are the effects of rising sea temperatures and acidification? 28 Hotels & Important Telephone Numbers What is the potential of deep-sea mining and what are the risks? And how can such 29 Restaurants an intricate ecosystem be kept in balance? Highly specialised research institutes work on questions like these in Germany. 30 Notes 34 Imprint Focusing on the German Science Year 2016*17 “Seas and Oceans”, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has invited a delegation of international jour- nalists on a press tour in October 2017. This one-week excursion through , to the Baltic and the , includes visits to research institutes and universities that are engaged in marine, polar and coastal research. The journalists will have the opportunity to debate with experts and to see state-of-the-art infrastructure such as research vessels, sea floor drill rigs and other equipment up-close.

This press tour is part of the initiative to “Promote Innovation and Research in Germany” which was launched by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in 2006. Since then various processes and events have been organised under the brand “Research in Germany – Land of Ideas” to present German innovation and research worldwide. The initiative also seeks to build strategic partnerships with institutions out- side Germany.
