N. 210404c Sunday 04.04.2021 Telegram of condolence on the death of His Eminence Cardinal Christian Wiyghan Tumi The following is the telegram of condolence from the Holy Father to Archbishop Samuel Kleda of Douala, Cameroon, on the death on Friday 2 April of His Eminence Cardinal Christian Wiyghan Tumi, of the Titular church of Santi Martiri dell’Uganda a Poggio Ameno, archbishop emeritus of Douala: Telegram of the Holy Father His Excellency Samuel KLEDA Archbishop of Douala DOUALA On learning with sorrow of the death of our brother Cardinal Christian Tumi, I wish to express my condolences and my joining in prayer with the College of Cardinals, the family and friends of the deceased as well as with all those touched by this bereavement. Appointed bishop of Yagoua, then archbishop of Garoua and Douala, Cardinal Tumi left an unforgettable mark on the Church as well as on the social and political life of his country, always committing himself courageously to the defence of democracy and the promotion of human rights. In later years, he was always available to serve peace and reconciliation. Created Cardinal by Saint John Paul II in 1988, he was a faithful collaborator with the Popes, assuming various offices within the Roman Curia. May the Lord welcome his Servant in his peace and joy! As a token of comfort, in this Easter season, I impart to you, Your Excellency, my Apostolic Blessing, as well as to the family and friends of the deceased Cardinal, especially to those who were with him in recent years, and to all those who will take part, in the hope of the Resurrection, in the celebration of the funeral. KHONDLO MTSHALI & CO-SUPERVISOR: MS. SBUSISIWE PHILILE GWALA DECEMBER 2017 ii ABSTRACT This study examines the roles of the Church and its models of peace effort in the DRC from 2001 to 2016. The main objective is to identify and analyze the impact of the role of the church on the conflict; to evaluate the success of the Church in Peacebuilding from 2001- 2016; to examine the key challenges and opportunities facing the Churches in its intervention, and; to identify how the church could maximize its peacebuilding potential in the DRC. Thus, the following questions were set forth to guide the research: 1) what role has the church played in DRC conflict from 2001 to 2016? 2) What successes has the church achieved? 3) What obstacles has the Church faced in its peace efforts? 4) How can the church deal with these obstacles to maximize its potential of achieving a sustainable peace in the DRC? Therefore, the qualitative approach is found appropriate for these research questions, because it grants valuable understanding of the issues through a careful examination of historical data. So, the non-empirical study makes use of secondary sources of data collection.Also, John Paul Lederach’s “peacebuilding pyramid” is opted for as the conceptual framework.

The Constitution and Governance in Cameroon This book provides a systematic analysis of the major structural and institutional governance mechanisms in Cameroon, critically analysing the constitutional and legislative texts on Cameroon’s semi-presidential system, the electoral system, the legislature, the judiciary, the Constitutional Council and the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms. The author offers an assessment of the practical application of the laws regulating constitutional institutions and how they impact on governance. To lay the groundwork for the analysis, the book examines the historical, constitutional and political context of governance in Cameroon, from independence and reunification in 1960–1961, through the adoption of the 1996 Constitution, to more recent events including the current Anglophone crisis. Offering novel insights on new institutions such as the Senate and the Constitutional Council and their contribution to the democratic advancement of Cameroon, the book also provides the first critical assessment of the legislative provisions carving out a special autonomy status for the two Anglophone regions of Cameroon and considers how far these provisions go to resolve the Anglophone Problem. A minimum of 12,000 people have lost their lives and more than a million internally displaced persons in the Ambazonia as well as Francophone part of Cameroon. United Nations Refugee records over 300,000 Ambazonian refugees in their camps in Nigeria while the same numbers may be found in private homes in the same country. As the military commit arson and human right abuses of different natures, richer families have sent their family members to West Africa, South Africa, Asia, Europe and America the United States where they are seeking asylum. The immediate cause was a peaceful protest organized by teachers and lawyers that the government reacted with extra force. After negotiations failed, Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium (CACSC) composed of teacher, lawyers and transporters trade union was formed to address the pertinent issues tabled before the government. The government banned CACSC and sent their leaders to dungeons. Cameroonians in the diaspora and the few leaders who escaped detention formed the Southern Cameroon Consortium United Front (SCACUF) was a nonviolent movement seeking a greater autonomy.
