Mission GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

Vision We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together. Message from The Co-Presidents

Dear chapter members, friends, and supporters of GlobeMed at the and Build Your Future Today Center (BFT),

We are proud to say that we have achieved another successful year, which we could not have achieved without your contributions and commitment. We have all found a community within the network of people that are a part of GlobeMed that will forever be a part of our lives. We continue to strengthen our relationship with our partner in Siem Reap, Cambodia and consistently meet our fundraising goal, which was $5,500 this year. Without the hard work of each and every one of our members, we could not have achieved this target. Through our annual Benefit Dinner, concessions, and other campaign events, we raised the funds for BFT. We have organized yet another fulfilling GROW trip, in which four or our members met our friends at BFT and worked alongside its founder, Sedtha Long. None of this would have been possible to accomplish without your support and encouragement, for which we have the utmost gratitude. We want to continue growing, providing more for our partner, as well as raising more awareness for GlobeMed as a whole. We hope to successfully lead GlobeMed at UVA next year, surmounting any challenges we face along theway. To BFT, thank you for showing us to be thankful for the little things, to cherish every moment. To our chapter, thank you for bringing a unique perspective to the table, and for always being motivated. And to our friends, supporters, and the rest of the GlobeMed network, thank you for embarking on this journey with us.

Yours Truly, Srujana Yadlapalli and Jaesun Lee Since our founding in September, 2011, our 2014-2015 Co-Presidents chapter has grown from 11 GlobeMed at University ofVirginia members to 60 members. About Us Our Chapter

GlobeMed at the University of Virginia was founded in the Fall of 2011 by a group of 11 students and was partnered with the Build Your Future Today Center (BFT) in SiemReap, Cambodia soon after. As of now, GlobeMed at UVa has raised over $16,000 to help fund BFT's Safe Child and Mother Project. Additionally, GlobeMed at UVa has produced about 60 dedicated chapter members, 20 alumni, and organized four successive GROW trips focused on project development and evaluation. KEY FACT: Infant mortality: 51.36 deaths/1,000 live births. Life expectancy: 63.78 years.

Our Partnership Build Your Future Today Center The Build Your Future Today (BFT) Center was founded in 2006 to improve the lives of the neglected rural villages surrounding Siem Reap. Sedtha Long, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide has changed the lives of hundreds through the comprehensive health, education, family peace--building, and microfinance programs implemented through BFT. Adopting a holistic, sustainable approach, BFT addresses common issues like malnutrition and the lack of life opportunities for disadvantaged families by buildingschools, donating health supplies, providing medical attention, improving nutrition through training community chefs and home gardens, and supplying start-up loans for families to pursue new livelihoods.

Siem Reap,Cambodia Population: 903,030 Cambodia underwent a mass genocide in the late 1970s, which killed off a fifth of the population. Our partner's founder, Sedtha Long, lost 10 of his 14 family members in this conflict. The high cost of health care in Cambodia limits its accessibility and those who can pay for it often accumulate long term debt doing so. Specifically, fewer than 60% of the poor who need healthcare can afford it. Our Project

BY THE NUMBERS:

Key metric: 300 children directly benefit, while over 1000 community members are impacted.

Cost of project:$5,580

What the money directly funded: Health and nutrition programs for the villages of Arak Svay and Sre Robong

We fund health and nutrition programs for children in the rural villages of Arak Svay and Sre Robong, which are located near Siem Reap, Cambodia.

We funded the nutrition and health education programs for the villages of Arak Svay and Sre Robong. Together, these villages have over 300 children and a total population of 1003 people, with 360 people in Sre Robong and 643 people in Arak Svay. The money we raised went directly towards fuel for travel, food supplies for the nutrition programs, hygiene supplies (soap, lotion), educational materials, dining utensils (spoons, bowls, mats, etc.), community health education, and water filters. Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Benefit Night

We hosted a Benefit Night on our university’s grounds with the help of the UVA Center for Global Health. Dr. Richard Guerrant gave a presentation on childhood diarrhea, and there were performances by two a capella groups and a comedy improv club. Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

Total number of chapter members in 2014 – 2015: 20 Number of community-building events: 1 community building event, 2 officer retreats Many attempts were made to have decent community building events (dinners, pregames, ect.), but we as officers ran into an issue with finding space to host such gatherings. The one officer with an apartment in which to hold get-togethers stopped participating altogether by the start of the second semester. Likewise with officer retreats and community outreach, it was extremely difficult to organize alone especially given the time constraints of all involved. To be frank, staff structure was weak and staff dynamic was close to non-existent. Going forward, community building officers should a) have space to host events, b) begining community building process early, and c) continue to put on events frequently in order to build a cohesive sense of community. globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health . This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

One of the primary aims of ghU this year was to bring the chapter closer together through more involved and fun activities. We moved away from articles and lectures into more engaging games and videos with discussions. We also tried to relate the content of ghU as much as possible with our partner and what was happening on our campus. Adding a personal touch to the activites helped people to relate more to the topics at hand. One of our favorite events was preparing for WDSJ. We had lots of productive discussion on the importance of social justice but also got to act plain silly folding swans to adorn our message. World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2015

The chapter constructed a colorful sign filled with ideas and concepts that we, as students of the UVA community, support. Our university had been dealing with racial and sexual issues around grounds and we originally thought it was a good idea to expand on students' opinions on these issues. We ended up changing our specific focus to more positive aspects but wanted to make our message more noticeable around grounds. 2015 Summit Facing Injustice: Partnering for Systemic Change

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

GlobeMed's 2015 Summit is a weekend I will never forget. After attending Summit, I came back to UVa with my eyes opened to the injustice people face every single day, why it happens and what we can do to stop it. There was an incredibly moving race panel, discussing systematic racism in our society, which was followed by another panel that showed how many forms of professions and majors come together to fight for social justice through collaboration. Afterwards, we were given time to talk one on one with many of the speakers and I was able to talk to several who put my mind at ease about what major I want to pursue. Seeing how diverse the fields are of people working in social justice related work, I felt less inclined to put myself into a box and follow a set path. I also met many fellow GlobeMedders who were just as passionate as I am about human rights, linking me to students from all around the country with similar interests and one corresponding goal: to fight for social justice. Overall, attending the 2015 Summit has fueled my love for GlobeMed and what it aims to do. I'm so glad I was able to attend Summit on my first year and can only hope I'll be able to attend the next threeyears!

LENGTH OF STAY:

DATES OF TRAVEL: GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

At BFT, the interns visited the villages where projects are taking place most mornings and lent a hand if needed. BFT's village projects are under the categories: Community Education, Child Support Center, Community Health Care, Nutrition development, Peace Building, and Community Capacity and Livelihood building. Thus at thevillages, the interns volunteered by helping the BFT staff teach health and sanitation lessons, measure children's BMI, plant trees and more. Then in the afternoons, some of the interns helped teach English lessons at the BFT center for local children trying to improve their English skills. GlobeMed at University of Virginia Our Future

Dear Friends,

Internally, the chapter seeks to bolster our member count and increase retention for the upcoming school year. We will plan for two major events per semester and enhance communication amongst the different committees. We want to forge strong social bonds together early on to serve as the "glue" to hold our chapter together and to foster a supportive, fun environment. We will embrace a blend of tradition and creativity, keeping events that have worked in past years while also starting up new fundraisers and initiatives. Help us reach our promise to BFT by donating here: https://www.razoo.com/story/Globemedatuva Also include where/how/why to donate!!

Sincerely, "Globemed has truly changed the way I view the world. It has taught me the Srujana and Jaesun value of empathy and cultural 2015-2016 Co-Presidents awareness. It showed me that through GlobeMed at University ofVirginia understanding others' values and opinions, we are able to better collaborate effectively and work towards goals together. I also learned that dealing with cultural differences may often be challenging and require patience, an open mind, and some ingenuity. Ultimately, working with a multitude of various voices and opinions makes us a tigher-knit, more innovative, and more compassionate community.” – Steve Qian, 2015 Finances In 2014-2015, GlobeMed at University of Virginia raised $5,395 for Build Your Future Today Center] to support projects in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
