The percentage paid by the College is subject to change by the College at its discretion, and varies depending upon the benefit plan. Children of employees are eligible to participate in the medical and vision plans up to age 26, provided they have no other means of coverage. Children of employees are eligible to participate in the dental plan up to age 19, unless the child is certified as a full-time student, then they may be covered up to graduation or age 23, whichever comes first. A change in an employee’s choice of health insurance plan may be made at the annual open enrollment period or at the time of an IRS qualifying event. The design of the College’s health plans is reviewed annually and is subject to change by the College. Costs are also subject to provider rate setting. Coverage, co-payments, deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses are outlined in the benefit information found on the HR@hand website. It is the responsibility of each employee to immediately advise the Office of Human Resources of any change in information that may affect an employee’s benefits including name, address, marital status, number of dependents, or beneficiary.     St. Francis de Sales Feast Day: January 24th Today we celebrate St. Francis de Sales, who was born on August 21, 1567 in the province of Savoy, France. He is the patron saint of writers, journalists, authors and deafness. He grew up, as the eldest of six brothers, in a wealthy family. His parents, François de Sales de Boisy and Françoise de Sionnaz, belonged to old Savoyard aristocratic families. His father intended for Francis to be a lawyer in order to take his place as a senator. He received his doctorate at law school but decided to join the priesthood and eventually became the bishop of Geneva. He was called, “Gentleman Saint,” because of his gentle spirit, and dedication to preaching through compassionate means. While working in the diocese of Geneva, he volunteered to evangelize Le Chablais, where the Genevans had imposed the Reformed Faith, by preaching constantly with zeal, kindness and holiness. He authored many publications (books, pamphlets, etc.), such as The Art of Loving God, Introduction to the Devout Life and Finding God’s Will for You. Many writings were addressed to lay people regarding the universal call of all Catholics to be saints. He was blessed in his ability to return Calvinists to the faith through his simple and clear explanation of Catholic doctrine. Furthermore, he used sign language to convert the deaf and helped found the Order of the Visitation, with Jane de Chantal. He had a stroke on December 27th during a journey, back to the diocese of Geneva. There he received the last sacraments and made his profession of faith, repeating constantly the words: "God's will be done! Jesus, my God and my all!" He died the next day, on December 28th, 1622; he was 55 years old.

    Driving Truman Capote: a Memoir

    Theron Montgomery Driving Truman Capote: A Memoir On a calm, cool April afternoon in 1975, I received an unexpected call from my father on the residence First Floor pay phone in New Men’s Dorm at Birmingham-Southern College. My father’s voice came over the line, loud and enthused. “Hi,” he said, enjoying his surprise. He asked me how I was doing, how school was. “Now, are you listen- ing?” he said. “I’ve got some news.” Truman Capote, the famous writer of In Cold Blood, would be in our hometown of Jacksonville, Alabama, the next day to speak and read and visit on the Jacksonville State University campus, where my father was Vice-President for Academic Affairs. It was a sudden arrangement Capote’s agent had negotiated a few days before with the school, pri- marily at my father’s insistence, to follow the author’s read- ing performance at the Von Braun Center, the newly dedicat- ed arts center, in Huntsville. Jacksonville State University had agreed to Capote’s price and terms. He and a traveling companion would be driven from Huntsville to the campus by the SGA President early the next morning and they would be given rooms and breakfast at the university’s International House. Afterwards, Capote would hold a luncheon reception with faculty at the library, and in the afternoon, he would give a reading performance at the coliseum. My father and I loved literature, especially southern liter- ature, and my father knew I had aspirations of becoming a writer, too. “You must come and hear him,” he said over the phone, matter-of-fact and encouraging.
