Bulldog Scholar-Athletes of the Week Male Derek Long (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) - Men’s Soccer Long scored DSU’s lone goal last week in the Bulldogs two games. He now has seven goals on the season which ranks second on the team. Female Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert-Hamilton East) - Women’s Tennis Sophomore Christine Petrilla had a terrific week advancing all the way to the championship match int he #2 singles flight at the MAS- CAC Individual Championships over the weekend. She won three matches before falling in the final to Katrina ynL of Wilkes . Petrilla finishes the fall season with a 9-10 singles record on the year. DeSales - 3, Manhattanville - 0 Purchase, NY (October 20, 2009) – The DeSales University volleyball team continued its winning combination as the Bulldogs rolled past Manhattanville College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-15), for their 12th straight victory in Freedom Conference action on Tuesday night. The win improves the Bulldogs to 17-6 overall and 5-1 in the Freedom Conference. DSU clinches its third straight Freedom Conference playoff berth with the win but still has work to do, needing a win over King’s College next week in its final regular season match of the season to clinch the #2 seed and a home playoff match in the first round of the Freedom Conference playoffs. All 14 players saw action in the win on Tuesday night including junior Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) who led the attack with 13 kills and a .444 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) added eight kills and senior Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) added six kills. Freshman Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) totaled 21 assists and 10 digs, sophomore Katie Dziuma (Bronx, NY/Preston) finished with seven assists and 10 digs, freshman Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) led the way with seven service aces, senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and junior Alyssa Poplaski (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) each had 12 digs for the Bulldogs.

DeSales - 3, Albright - 0 Reading, PA (October 22, 2009) – The DeSales University volleyball team tied a team record winning its 13th straight match with a 3-0 win over Albright College (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) in non-conference action on Thursday evening on the same day it received news that it was ranked eighth in the first edition of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings. DSU (18-6 overall) will get a chance to break the team record for consecutive wins on Wednesday, October 28th when they return to action in a critical Freedom Conference game vs. King’s College in Billera Hall beginning at 7:00 pm. Earlier in the day the NCAA released its regional rankings used by the organization to seed and select teams for the NCAA Tournament and the Bulldogs were ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region. It is believed this is the first time since the 1995 season that DeSales has been ranked in the NCAA Regional Rankings. In the win on Thursday night several Bulldogs contributed. Seniors Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) each totaled 10 kills to lead the offensive attack, while junior Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and freshman Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) each added six kills. Fehnel also had 15 digs and three blocks and Horrigan had a team-high seven blocks. Freshman Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) totaled 32 assists and 11 digs, freshman Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) fin- ished with four aces and eight digs, junior Alyssa Poplaski (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) added 10 digs, and senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) finished with a team-high 14 digs, moving within 23 digs of becoming the first-ever player to record 2,000 digs in a career. Joining the Bulldogs in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings were Juniata (#1), Haverford (#2), Eastern (#3), Salisbury (#4), Lebanon Valley (#5), Frostburg State (#6), Mary Washington (#7), and the Bulldogs at #8.

Field Hockey - 6-11 (Freedom - 0-5)

Manhattanville - 3, DeSales - 1 Purchase, NY (October 21, 2009) – The DeSales University field hockey team gave up three goals over a five minutes stretch in the first half and was never able to recover falling to Manhattanville College, 3-1, in a Freedom Conference game on Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in the Freedom, while the Valiants earn their first Freedom Conference win of the season and improve to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in the Freedom. MC had a 10-6 edge in shots, while DSU held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners. A scoreless game over the first 25 minutes of the game was broke over a span of five minutes and 10 seconds as the Valiants scored three times. The first goal came at the 25:59 mark on a marker from Jen Ascencio. Just 2:05 later, Kayla Meenan scored unassisted to make it 2-0 and Alyssa Coughlin got into the act just 3:05 after Meenan’s goal to give MVille a 3-0 lead. DSU pulled it within two goals at the 56:23 mark of the second half when sophomore Katie Martin (Bangor, PA/Bangor) scored her first goal of the game on a penalty stroke. Freshman Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) made five saves in the loss.

FDU-Florham - 2, DeSales - 1 Madison, NJ (October 25, 2009) – The DeSales University field hockey team took a 1-0 lead but was unable to find the back of the cage the rest of the game in a 2-1 loss at FDU-Florham in overtime of a Freedom Conference game on Sunday afternoon. DSU falls to 6-11 overall and 0-5 in the Freedom, while the Devils fall to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the Freedom. FDU-Florham had a 14-8 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners in the game. The Bulldogs will conclude its 2009 schedule this week when they host King’s College and Misericordia University in Freedom Conference games beginning at 4:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Junior Kelsey Strowhouer (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead 23:19 into the game when she scored off an assist from freshman Alyssa Knappenberger (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton). That lead lasted just 2:24 as the Devils’ Kelsey Kistle scored at 25:43 to tie game at one and that scored stood into the half. The second half saw both teams struggle to get anything going offensively as only six shots were recorded as the game went into overtime. FDU needed just 3:58 into the first overtime to score the game-winner as Lauren Guenther found the back of the cage handing the Devils the win. FreshmanVictoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) made six saves for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Manhattanville - 2, DeSales - 0 Purchase, NY (October 21, 2009) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team was shutout for just the second time all season as the Bulldogs fell at Manhat- tanville College, 2-0, in a Freedom Conference game on another gorgeous afternoon. DSU falls to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the Freedom with the loss, while the Valiants stay unbeaten in the conference with a perfect 5-0 mark and are 10-4 overall. MVille controlled play, out-shooting DSU, 23-7, in the game but had to make two teams saves to keep the game scoreless and earn the win. A scoreless game at the half remained scoreless into the 69th minute when MC broke the tie when Keston George scored off a rebound of a saved shot at the 68:55 mark. Just 2:56 later, Sebastian Chica, scored on a one-timer to the top corner, giving Manhattanville its insurance goal as the Bulldogs were unable to find the back of the net. SeniorKevin Lawrence (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) made six saves in his third straight start.

Misericordia - 2, DeSales - 1 Dallas, PA (October 24, 2009) – A free kick from about 50 yards out nine minutes into the second half proved to be the difference as the DeSales University men’s soccer team dropped its second straight Freedom Conference game, 2-1, on another rainy Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs fall to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the Freedom Conference, while Misericordia improves to 8-4-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference standings. DSU finishes its Freedom Conference schedule on Saturday, October 31st when they host Wilkes University at 2:00 pm in a game that will likely have major playoff implications. Misericordia struck first just 2:15 into the game when Andy Bush scored off a pass from Nick Ferguson in the lower left corner of the net. The Bulldogs wasted very little time tying the score when sophomore Derek Long (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) took a cross from junior Aaron Gildner (Slatington, PA/Parkland) and scored his seventh tally of the year just 2:21 after the Cougar goal. The game remained tied into the half and thru the first nine minutes of the second half before a DSU foul gave Misericordia what was thought to be a harm- less free kick from about 50-yards out. Ferguson however had other ideas and hit a rocket towards the goal that beat the Bulldogs keeper into the far corner with what proved to be the game-winner. Misericordia enjoyed a 13-11 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. Senior Kevin Lawrence (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) made five saves for the Bulldogs. Women’s Soccer - 6-9-1 (Freedom - 2-3-1)

Manhattanville - 2, DeSales - 1 Purchase, NY (October 20, 2009) – For the first seventy minutes on Tuesday the DeSales University women’s soccer team had Manhattanville College on the ropes but two late goals by the Valiants spoiled DSU’s upset bid as the Bulldogs fell 2-1 in a Freedom Conference game on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. DSU falls for the second straight game for the second time in the Freedom Conference as they drop to 6-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Freedom. The Valiants improve to 13-1-1 overall and 5-0 in the Freedom. DSU jumped out to a one-goal lead just prior to the thirty minute mark when sophomore Haley Vollmer (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) scored unassisted, her fifth goal of the year. That lead held up into the half as the Bulldogs hung tight on the defensive end, despite the Valiants enjoying an 8-5 lead advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. DeSales continued to lead thru the first 25 minutes of the second half as Manhattanville turned up the offensive pressure. The Valiants continued to pepper the DSU net with shots and broke thru to tie the game at one at the 71:41 mark on a goal from Morgan Rebollal. MVille continued pounding the offensive zone and took its first lead just 4:14 after it tied game on Rebollal’s second goal, which proved to be the game-winner. SophomoreMelissa Millili (Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) played well once again, keeping DSU in the game with 10 saves in between the pipes.

Misericordia - 2, DeSales - 1 Dallas, PA (October 24, 2009) – The DeSales University women’s soccer team dropped its third straight Freedom Conference game, falling at Misericordia University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon on another dreary day for a soccer game. The Bulldogs are now 6-9-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Freedom Conference, while the Cougars improve to 7-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference standings. DSU has one game left on its regular season schedule on Saturday, October 31st (Halloween), when they host Wilkes University beginning at Noon. A scoreless game late in the first half saw MU score first when Kim Suchoski scored off a corner on assists by both Sam Helmstetter and Lauren Payne at the 38:38 mark. That lead into halftime as the Cougars enjoyed a 10-1 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks over the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Miseri tallied its insurance goal, a goal they would need, at the 58:29 mark as Kristen Gedon scored unassisted on a blast from about 15 yards out. DSU countered just 3:25 later when sophomore Amanda Fink (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) scored her team-leading sixth goal on a penalty kick. That goal however ended the scoring as the Bulldogs were unable to come up with a tying marker. Sophomore Melissa Millili (Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) made three saves in the loss.

Alvernia - 7, DeSales - 2 Reading, PA (October 20, 2009) – The DeSales University women’s tennis team concluded the team portion of its fall schedule with a 7-2 setback at Alvernia University in a non-conference match held on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. The loss moves DeSales to 3-10 overall for the season, while Alvernia improves to 12-2 overall. Leading the way on Tuesday was junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) who continued her fine season with two more wins. Steiner teamed with sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert-Hamilton East) to win, 8-3 at the No. 1 doubles position and then earned a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) win at the No. 1 singles spot.

MASCAC Individidual Championships Wilkes-Barre, PA (October 25, 2009) – Sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert-Hamilton East) had a terrific weekend reaching the Champion- ship match of the #2 singles flight as the DeSales University women’s tennis team competed at the MASCAC Individual Championships on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Rain forced most of the weekend matches indoors on Friday and Saturday as the tournament finished up on Sunday on a beautiful fall afternoon. In the singles matches Petrilla led the way winning three matches to reach the finals where she fell to Katrina Lynn of Wilkes University, 6-2, 6-0. In the opening round she defeated Stacey Clark of Messiah College, 8-5, topped Nell Kucich of Manhattanville College, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) in the quarterfinals and was a 6-3, 6-4 winner of Shayna Heintzelman of in the semifinals. Junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) also had a strong weekend as she advanced to the semifinals of the #1 singles flight with a first round win over Lisa Archibald of King’s College, 8-0, and a quarterfinal win over Abby Searfoss of Misericordia University, 6-2, 6-2. Steiner dropped her semifinal match-up to Melanie Nolt of Wilkes University, 6-2, 6-4. In the #3 singles flight, sophomoreKrista Damirgian (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) lost in the opening round, 8-3, to Christy Rossowski of King’s College, while freshman Ariane Cain (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) was an 8-6 first round winner over Kelly Drinkard of Lebanon Valley College in the first round before falling in the quarterfinals to Annie Gotchel of Messiah College, 6-4, 6-4. In the #5 singles flight junior Amelia Lloyd (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) was a first round winner, 8-6, over Caitlin Bedford of Lebanon Valley College, but was defeated in the quarterfinals to Lauren Breen of King’s College, 6-3, 6-2. FreshmanMarissa Williams (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) rounded out the singles action with an 8-1 loss in the first round to Joeliza Valdez of Manhattanville College at the #6 flight. In doubles action Steiner and Petrilla teamed for an 8-4 first round over Cynthia Darby and Jillian Talarico of King’s College but fell in the quartefinals, 8-2 to Jess Russell and Emily Swarr of at the #1 flight. In the #2 flight, Damirgian and Cain fell to Kristen Chen and Gotchel of Messiah College, 8-2, while Lloyd and Williams dropped a first round match-up in the #3 flight, 8-0, to Melissa DeBello and Irina Samson of .
