May 4-6, 2007 Quakertown Memorial Park Hosted by DeSales University Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation The Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation, formerly called the Middle Atlantic States Col- legiate Athletic Conference, and commonly known as the MAC, originated in 1912 as a loose confederation of colleges. It was unified into an actual all-sports playing conference in 1952, and is the oldest and largest Division III conference holding NCAA associate membership. In 1999, spurred by changes in the NCAA championship structure, the Corporation formed as an umbrella for three conferences - Freedom (Delaware Valley, DeSales, Drew, Farleigh Dickinson - Madison, King’s, Lycoming, Scranton, and Wilkes), Commonwealth (Albright, Elizabeth- town, Juniata, Lebanon Valley, Messiah, Moravian, Susquehanna, and Widener), and Middle Atlantic (all sixteen institutions). The earliest records indicate that the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Association was organized on Dec. 11, 1912. The first annual meeting was held on May 16, 1913, followed by the first conference track meet at the following day. In subsequent years, the association grew, and many Leagues sprang up under its umbrella. The Middle Atlan- tic Association, formed in March 1925, was the first to name a Middle Atlantic champion. The first conference, formed as three-divisions (North, West and South) had the winners join an at-large selection for a four-team playoff. The three-section alignment eventually dissolved, but the Southern Di- vision remained intact. Alignments were further altered when the NCAA created Divisions I, II and III. The MAC added women’s athletics in 1978-79. Soon women’s teams within the Conference earned the respect of all Division III members. The steady incorporation of Senior Women’s Adminis- trators into the MAC hierarchy reached its zenith when Dr. Carol Fritz, associate athletic director at Western Maryland College, was elected president in 1986. During the first 76 years, a number of Athletic Directors served as conference coordinator on a part-time basis. David B. Eavenson, a MAC legend, served as President, Publicity Director and/or Exec- tive Director from 1972-1988. The Conference entered a new era in 1988 with the selection of Nathan Salant as its first full-time Executive Director. Major changes were made for the 1993-94 year. Ten schools left to form their own association; their depar- ture served as a catalyst for the remaining sixteen schools whose Presidents and athletic administrators formed a streamlined, efficient, dual-league organization. This “new look” was part of a national movement to consolidate similar institutions for competitive athletic opportunities while increasing presidential involvement in the setting of athletic policy. It was also the year the MAC hired its first female executive director, Linda Hopple, who began her duties Oct. 1, 1993 and served through May 8, 2000. At the current time, Kenneth W. Andrews is the Executive Director. The Conference office, housed at from 1988-93, was moved to the campus of when Hopple was hired, and remains there. A moratorium on new membership ended in June 1995; in December of that year, the Board accepted Allentown College (DeSales University as of January 1, 2001) as a new member of the Middle Atlantic Conference, starting in the 1997-98 academic year. DeSales University, a member of the Freedom Conference, replaced Upsala Col- lege who closed its doors at the end of the 1994-95 academic year. Currently, the Conference sponsors competition in 12 men’s sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, , indoor and outdoor track and field, lacrosse, soccer, , , and wrestling. The eleven women’s sports are: basketball, cross country, , indoor and outdoor track and field, lacrosse, soccer, , swimming, tennis and . In addition to Andrews, Katie Imes, Assistant to the Executive Director, staffs the Conference office. 2007 Freedom Conference Baseball Standings Standings thru games played on April 30, 2007 League Overall Freedom W L T Pct.
