The First Word My blood is red… and gold! Well the season reaches a pivotal point today as it’s our last home game for three matches until we return on the 29th June… we face University and Island Bay away in the league and a juicy tie with Wharfies on Queens Birthday Monday to look forward to.

Hutt Park has been a happy hunting ground this season with three wins out of three starts and 10 goals in the process. Today our visitors are Olympic and they are an attack minded club so hopefully today we’ll see a few more “in the auld onion bag!”

The club’s had a successful period with our Men’s 1st team equal top of Premier League and our Women’s Premier League team sitting first in their league.

And also in the last two weekends we’ve seen thousands of mums Skipper ‘JT’ dads and young footballers descend on Hutt Park for the Annual Wynton Rufer tournament. Over 85 teams participated and the event keeps getting bigger and better every year. Next year it’s the 20th anniversary so expect an even bigger festival of football. Thanks to our major sponsors revera for their continued support!

Last weekend also saw the official opening of the artificial at Memorial Park. For us it was a day of missed opportunities. A 2 –2 away draw versus Petone felt like a loss after a failed clearance was smashed against a hapless Brandon Tai who was given an automatic red, conceding a penalty in the process an subsequently the equaliser. Brandon at least gets to play this weekend with the double header League and Cup double.

Back to today and our battle with Olympic at Hutt Park… Our last home defeat was on the 28th April 2012 well over a year ago. Our last home win against United was our 10th win in a row. Victories over Wests, (2) Wainui, Petone, Miramar, Waterside (2) Marist and Island Bay… Fortress Hutt Park! So look for more fireworks today. Enjoy the football and enjoy our Stop Out hospitality!

May 26, Karori Park v Karori 4-0 (0-0) Mel Macdougall 2, Jade 2

A great day in Karori with the wind as normal. A bit of an early start NME ELECTRICAL with an 11.00am kickoff and a game against a mid table team. We need to keep winning as we welcome Kels and Kathryn back from injury but make a sluggish start with our players not really switched on which made the 1st half hard to watch as we struggled to get on top of an average Wharfies side. The halftime score of 0-0 was not where we should have been.

A pointed and blunt half time talk certainly did the job. It looked like a different team that started the 2nd spell and in the 50th minute Jade scored to break the drought. More came from Mel MacD with a 54th minute goal and then a penalty in 76th minute. Jade finished the scoringoff with another in the 85th minute.

After a frustrating 1st half the 2nd showed what these girls can do if the put their minds to it if they stick to the game plan. To be honest it’s these type of games that you can slip up on—but we didn’t! We left Karori with 3 points and a game on the turf next week.

3 pts Aimee a rock in defence. 2 pts Jade 2 goals & good runs. 1 pts Alysa Hard work on both wings.

Top of the table - even if it is courtesy of BNU playing Cup football last weekend, but it's a great spot to be & simple maths says if we keep winning we'll stay top too! Since our last update a couple of wins to note, 2-0 versus Lower Hutt and then 4-0 versus Waterside Karori. Both matches saw the team with slow starts (both games 0-0 at the break) but strong finishes ensured 6 points collected. Elliott and Craig pleased that as they juggle a few walking wounded, other players have stepped in and looked comfortable at this level - youngsters Sian Feeney and Christine Hosie amongst the players making their debut at this level - just one year out from playing juniors at Stop Out.

Tomorrow it's a late kick off, 5pm versus Marist, in what will be a tough match. Marist never make it easy & in recent years we've had some cracking matches against them. Now we don't want to be getting ahead of ourselves but the following week it's the all important return fixture versus BNU.

Women’s update

For the trainspotters'

50' club: Since the rebirth of women's football at the club (2008) we now have a group of players clocking up their 50th matches in senior football, the latest members of the 50 Club means we could field a team of these veterans. Recent inductees include Louise MacKay (50), club captain Kathryn Burt (55), Courtnee Cropp (52), Jenny Hibbert (50), Hannah Schenkel (56) & Kath McGuinness (53).They join four of our 2008 originals - Steph Bremner (83), Brooke Mildenhall (82), Amelia Stewart (79) and Alana Marsh (66) who are still playing each weekend. Other members of the club are; Melanie Macdougall (57), Letesha Townsend (61), Kelsey O'Connor (59), Sophie Burley (66) and Melissa Adams (61).

Goals: 93 goals scored so far in 2013 across the four teams, so there's some side bets on just who might tuck away goal #100 tomorrow. There's also a great contest unfolding for this year's Golden

Boot. Laura Dobie with 9 and Mel' Macdougall with 7 are putting them away for the Premiers, while Jade Morrissey also has 7 despite being away for a few weeks. New face to the club Mel' Hodgson has 9, 18YO "veteran" Letesha Townsend has 10 but with her nose in front, Heather Williamson on 11.

Women's Update: Tomorrow sees the D3 Blacks tackle Vic' University in a winner take all clash. It's

the final round of the first half of the season and our ladies need to win to gain promotion to D2. Both teams have 6 and 1 records, tho' the Uni girls shade us by goal difference. So to Te Whaea and your support would be most welcome at 2:30pm as coach Angus and his dream team go for gold.

D2 sit comfortably mid table having bagged a win and a narrow loss in the past two weeks. The girls are playing a typical SO brand of football under coach Dean, and not surprisingly it's a team of youth brimming with enthusiasm and intent to make a push for promotion in the second half of the winter. Tomorrow they wrap round one up with a game at Upper Hutt - now a big win (5 or more goals) and a slip up by Stokes Valley would actually see that goal achieved a couple of months early…just saying.

D1 roll along with a run of 5 wins; sizing up the teams in this grade and having tucked away two 4-0 victories in the past fortnight. 11 Steve’s 1st team match reports

Stop Out 5 vs Wellington United 1. 18th May 2013, Hutt Park. (Malo, Gaughan, Gulley, Yates 2)

Today was old timers day at Stop Out. Old timers day is a special day for the club, where club legends and ex players spend the day at the club supporting our teams. One of theseclub legends, Chatham cup winner Jim Blair, came in and gave us a pre match talk. Ashort history of the club and some motivational words.Wellington United are a side we had a costly loss to last year in one of our worstperformances, with that in mind and with Jims speech, the lads were well and truly up forthis game!

The game started with us on the front foot. Our wide men, Eddie and particularly Silao were getting in behind causing problems with their pace. Wellington United had watchedus the week before, and their tactics were to play an offside trap which we struggled toadjust to. It didnt take long for our pressure to pay off, with Silao getting the ball out wideand cutting inside two players to send a deflected shot off his right foot to put us 1-0 up.Within the space of five minutes it was 2-0.

Cherbel and Joe exchanged passes onhalfway putting Cherbel in behind the back four. Cherbel took the ball towards the keeper and showed great composure to square the ball back to Joe who finished to put us 2 up. From here Wellington United started to come into the game, getting in behind us and looking dangerous from a couple of sloppy passes from us. We held out to go into halftime 2-0 up. We came out second half knowing that if we scored next we would kill the game off. Wewere playing some great football, creating chance after chance without being able to put the ball away. A combination of some great scrambling defence, and some bad luck meaning a frustrating period for us. We finally made it 3-0 when JT played a ball over the top for Steve who went past the keeper and slotted home. From here we put the foot down. Yatesy was on and causing havoc up top, and after he ran onto a through ball and cut inside two defenders he put a great finish into the top corner. At 4-0 the next goal was the goal of the game. The ball fell to the Wellington united striker just inside our half, who sent a volley into the top corner of our net! Great finish. We made it 5-1 when Yatesy poached another from a goalmouth scramble, which was eventually given as an12 own goal. A 5-1 win and a good performance from the lads. MOM Cherbel Khouchaba

Petone 2 vs Stop Out 2. 25th May 2013, Memorial Park (Gaughan, Gulley)

Today we were playing Petone on their great new artificial turf. Whilst you can't beat a nice grass surface, lets be honest, they are few and far between in Wellington! Petone had come off a good result last week, unlucky to draw with Island Bay, so we knew we would have to be at our very best to get the 3 points we wanted.

The game began evenly with neither side able to get on top early, both sides tactics were obvious from the start. We tried to play through the midfield, and release our wide players to create chances, while Petone were crowding the midfield, pressuring us to give the ball away and catch us on the break. We did a reasonable job of keeping possession, but were struggling to break them down, with a strong northerly blowing into our faces we were pinned in our own half. A turnover from us allowed the Petone right winger to get up the line, Fizz had tracked him down but his deflected pass into the box somehow found the strikers feet who hit a shot beyond Jack to make it 1-0. From here we started to get our game going, Silao and Ed were getting in behind and causing problems, we just couldn't get that clear cut chance we needed. The game continued like this right up until just before half time. We conceded a corner which we cleared to Packer who played Eddie in down the right, Ed blitzed his marker and whipped in a pin point cross to Joe at the back post who buried his header. Counter attacking at its best. 1-1 at half time, and we were confident knowing we had the wind at our backs for the remainder of the game.

We came out second half fired up and straight from kick off we attacked, Packer ran at the midfield and played a ball to Joe who made his way into the box to win a penalty after an over aggressive challenge from the centre back. Steve put the penalty away to put us 2-1 up. We continued to press Petone and put their back four under all sorts of pressure, they could not get out of their own half with the wind playing havoc! Despite the pressure, they continued to defend well, and some good goalkeeping kept the score at 2-1. Ed was making defenders look silly on the right, but we could not seem to get the crucial 3rd goal we needed. Petone were continuing to counter attack, and came into the game as the half wore on. From one of these attacks they won a corner. A great ball was played in and a Jacko punch fell to their player who hit it first time, Brandon cleared the ball off the line only to be pulled up for a handball. A straight red card and a penalty, very harsh for what seemed a fair block. The penalty was scored and the game finished at 2-2. Credit to Petone who played a great game, though we couldn't help feeling like this draw was a loss.

The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out fan Mike Barton gives us his personal

Should Masters Football view on the beautiful game! be shown on the telly?

The UEFA Champions League Final has become something of an annual highlight. I argue that it now occupies the watching space that the FA Cup Final did for many years. Sunday’s match between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich was, I thought, a pretty decent match. The match had

drama, atmosphere and passion in huge amounts.

That said my watching companions kept pointing out to me that television does not do the football world justice. They argue that the big, and small, television companies fail to understand that not all football is played in huge stadia in front of huge crowds. Further, that there is an audience out there just waiting for Capital Football’s Masters Football. It was about there that I rolled my eyes in

disbelief but attempted to humour them. Then I looked at them and they both had the glint of total (maybe not total) seriousness in their steely gaze. The look that says committed believer. For a moment I did think of using the word fanatic but before I got it out I was reminded that the term fan is derived from the word fanatic. Looking at an etymology dictionary it points out that fan is ‘probably a shortening of fanatic, but may be influenced by the fancy, a collective term for followers of a certain hobby or sport (especially boxing)’. (A fancy of boxing followers? Hmm…)

The other big discussion of the morning was shirt culture. I was in a room that had Sporting Lisbon,

Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool shirts on display. At the point that I dismissed it all as part of the culture of consumption that, broadly speaking, seems to be part of our way of life. The football shirt,

when I was younger, was something in the back pages of the football magazines that so many of us pored over but rarely saw. Now they have a certain ubiquity.

By way of example, I was passing a Petone Rugby Club kids event recently and in the crowd I saw a Juventus and a Besiktas shirt. There are so many shirts and so much shirt interest that there is even a website purely given over to shirt discussion. ( http://www.footballshirtculture.com/ )During the chat it was pointed out that, despite my cynicism, I am not immune to shirt culture. The Algeria, Everton and Stop Out shirts are evidence. The Stop Out one is a particular favourite. It was given to me in 1979, I think, and was; I was told, worn by Mike Jones during his National League days at the club. This would have been early seventies. The thing is the shirt looks way too small for him ever to have got into it and I am sure that we wore shirts bearing the logo of a large and now extremely popular European company. Either way, when Masters Football makes it to television and I get to be the half-time pundit I am wearing my Stop Out shirt.
