The First Word My blood is red… and gold!

Well we’re only 5 games into the season but already the train spotters are having a field day comparing our 2013 season start compared to that of 2012. In 2012, five games into the season we were on 4 points… In 2013 five games in we’re on 12 points. Amazingly It took us until Round 11 in 2012 to get past the 12 point mark… Of the 5 matches we’ve played this season, relative to the corresponding fixtures played in 2012 we’ve had 3 more wins, 9 more goals, 4 less goals conceded and we’re 8 points better off. Our first clean sheet in 2012 was round 15… In 2013 that was achieved in game 1! In 2012 we amassed 2 clean sheets. We’ve Steve Gulley surpassed that in 2013 with already 3 clean sheets! And we’ve also had two away wins this season compared to a staggering zero, zilch, niente, none, zip- away wins in 2012.

So what conclusions can you draw from all of those stats? Apart from a big thank you to ACC for the “Stat Man’s” time!

Well you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to realise we’ve had a better start in 2103… But no one’s getting ahead of themselves. Competition favourites Island Bay and have also had very strong starts to the season and will be competitive come seasons end.

One of the pleasing factors this year is the quality recruitment in key areas. Every week the combinations are gelling and with depth across the squad the options for Stevey and Scott are endless. And unlike many teams we’ve played this season our desire to play Martin Packer attacking, entertaining football is to be applauded.

After a comfortable first up romp against the school- boys of Wellington College it would be wonderful to again mirror our Cup run of 2012. Wharfies are our next opponent!

Today it’s old timers Day and back to league action. It’s fitting that are our opponents because in the halcyon National League days of the 70s Stop Out and Wellington Diamond United were firm foes on the football field. Both clubs are on the rise again with Wellington United’s first team back in Central league. Today we welcome their reserve team and it’s top versus bottom. And across on #2, the 2nds take on… you guessed it Wellington Eddie Burnett United. So welcome to Hutt Park, enjoy the football and enjoy our hospitality!

Women’s Capital Premier

NME ELECTRICAL The Premiers sit handily placed, one point behind leaders BNU after 5 matches. Goals have been raining in as the team puts together an unbeaten league run of 4 matches before tackling Lower Hutt tomorrow at Hutt Park1, 1:00pm.

Stand out result for the young squad is the 6-2 win over fellow title challengers, Victoria University. After an early lead was hauled back by the Uni’ team the Stop Out girls fired in four unanswered goals over the last half hour to make an emphatic statement to the rest of the league. Youth is once again a feature of the side, the sum of the players age only marginally exceeding the combined ages of Elliott and Craig on the sideline (Elliott’s the one with hair). Sadly the team has lost the youthful April Gallagher for the season, the young at heart midfielder felled by a broken metatarsal - a self inflicted injury at her 40th celebrations (and Craig thought it was the young one’s he should worry about on Saturday nights!!).

Despite their young age the squad recently had Mel Macdougall & Kathryn Burt play their 50th games in senior football for the club – while stalwart keeper Kath McGuinness has also joined the growing number of the “50” club.

On the pitch the team is improving their performance week by week, with new faces such as Aimee Sanson, Olivia Browne, Madison Bibby & Adele Lonergan making their mark in red shirts (all are still at high school). The engine room of the two Mel’s with support from Maddy, Alysa, Steph and Amalia is a delight to watch – their short passing game a feature as they put 5 goals past North Wgtn, and 4 past both Karori & Wellington United.

The team went to Maycenvale in the Hawkes Bay for the First Round of the ASB Women’s Knock Out Cup on May the 5th. While the 0-3 result was disappointing the team had more than half the shots on goal during the hot afternoon. Sadly, their shooting boots must have fallen out of the van at BP Dannevirke and an even contest had an inflated outcome with 2 goals scored in injury time when the Stop Out players were up the other end chasing an equaliser.

Women’s update

All three of the club’s other women’s teams have strung together good results since our last update. With the bald Mourinho (Russ) assisting the Editor on the sidelines the D1 team have strung together three wins on the trot – all against “mature” opposition. Each win has been by the odd goal, each win showing that the young charges can hold their nerve seeing out games up by a goal – though contributing to the aging process of the coaches!

Jaimee Bialy, Danielle Thorne and Sophie Burley add some experience into the mix each game & are well supported by their younger team mates. A 40 yard winner from Jaimee the difference in a win over Wellington, likewise a powerful header from Alana as the team beat Seatoun and then a cracking hat trick from Jade last weekend as the team beat Petone on their turf. This weekend, BNU at their turf (5:00pm).

Three wins from their last four games have shot the D2 Reds up the table. Heather Williamson has her shooting boots on, notching a string of braces in the last month of Sunday’s. The nature of the squad & a variety of kick off times has meant most weeks there’s a new face or two in the team but the good work ethos (most weeks says Dean) and a strong team ethos (every week says Dean) has got them through often in emphatic style. This weekend they’re at IBU for a 5:00pm kick off on the turf as the chance for a mid-season promotion takes shape.

The D3 Blacks hit a speed bump last weekend, beaten in their top of the table clash by a very polished Paekakariki. That aside though the dream team coached by Angus has been in great form, notching 24 goals in the previous 5 games an conceding none. The team is a good mix of maturity and youthful endeavour…and mature endeavour…and a little Irish craic…that is enjoying themselves as they push for mid-winter promotion. Melissa Hodgson is finding the back of the net with regularity, as is young Letesha Townsend both of these two ensuring the contest for Women’s golden boot is across the squad going to be a very good contest.

Stop Out vs Marist. 4th May 2013, Kilbirnie Park.

Marist 0, Stop Out 3 (Gaughan, Gulley, Burnett)

We went to Marist knowing that points are very hard to come by at Kilbirnie Park.

Last year we escaped with a 1-1 draw, and this was our best result in years on a

park that everyone struggles with. With this in mind we had a great week training

in preparation for the game.

We went out fired up and from the first whistle we really put the heat on Marist. Despite the difficult conditions we were really getting our passing game going, and once again Silao and Eddie were causing problems in wide areas. After so much sustained pressure, something had to give and it eventually did. Funnily enough it came from a mis-hit through ball that somehow snuck through the Marist back four. The ball fell at Joes feet who took a few touches towards goal to set himself up, and put us in the lead with a classy finish into the bottom corner. At 1-0 up we knew we had taken the crucial first step towards 3 points. The rest of the first half was a niggly affair, with Marist seemingly taking the physical approach to put us off our game, we dealt with this well and went into halftime ahead.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, we were dominating, Marist were frustrated. They had a good period just after halftime where they managed to get behind us but our back four and Jacko dealt with this well. Once we managed to get back on top we really took the game to Marist and before long it was 2-0. After some great play through the midfield Packer released Eddie down the right who cut the ball back to Packer, who then squared it to Steve to finish. A great team goal. “When I was at school you could only Virtually from kick off Eddie got himself out wide again, get black boots!” before he cut inside four players and bury a low finish to make it 3-0, a great individual goal. From here we saw the game out, we could have had a couple more but the game ended in a very satisfying 3-0 win. MOM Joe Gaughan

13 Action in the Cup win over Wellington College.

The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out fan Mike Barton The Best Stop Out Eleven that I Never Saw. picks his best Stop Out Any football club’s big argument always is... team of all time! just what is the best eleven in the club’s history? It must be safe to say that more than a few of us have had that discussion. For all that, just how can you know? After all, Stop Out started in 1919 and, in my case, I went to my first match, against Blockhouse Bay, in 1971 I believe. Forty two years since my first game. That still leaves fifty years of players and matches unseen. So to be safe, I am only giving the best Stop Out eleven that I have seen in my years.

There should be criteria for selection. The criteria will be those that played a ‘few games’, at least a season’s worth of first team matches. For example, players like Grant Turner and Wynton Rufer have fewer than twenty games between them for the club. For the formation I thought I would go with 4-4- 2. After some research, with Alastair Robb, I ended up with a shortlist of twenty eight names. The easiest choice has been that of goalkeeper and that place goes to Barry Pickering. There were other keepers who were good. The likes of Dave Houghton and Graham Petersen prove that. In my early teens George Flecknor was probably the keeper I most enjoyed watching. He was a burly guy and could kick the ball a huge distance. I remember him rushing from goal in Te Whiti Park match and having a ‘smash’ at goal from about sixty metres out. He missed. My sister and I would go down to training and were in fits at George and his training ethic. It would be safe to say he viewed training as a necessary evil, perhaps just plain evil. Barry was different in that he was much more focussed. On a wet day at Newtown Park, Barry stopped a volleyed attempt at goal. The shot had ‘goal written all over it’ and then, just like that the ball was behind for a corner. Was it the best save I have ever seen? Quite possibly so. I spoke to Barry, a while back, and he thinks it was a ‘good save’.

The back four to my mind almost picks itself. There have been some sound defenders at the club. Good names like Paul Cameron, Malcom Dunford, Gordon McCabney, Garret Maartens, and Glen Winter but I am going to pick four names from the seventies. At right back there is Keith Barton and on the left is Maurice Tillotson. Some will remember Keith as more of a midfield player, indeed in our best season of 1977 that is where he played. As Maurice Tillotson described him, ‘courageous and tenacious’ and ‘never shirked a tackle’. Maurice had professional experience in both England and Belgium, even playing in the European Cup. He was calm and unruffled but had a steely streak. He made the ball look precious and not to be parted with.

The two centrebacks are Ken Dugdale and Mike Jones. Mike Jones was like an immoveable wall and he could head a ball. It was worth watching him play just to see him head the ball. A lot of us, being only ten or twelve years old when we first saw him, could not head a ball. Mike made it look exciting and dangerous. We were hooked. In my team we all wanted to head a ball like Mike Jones. Ken Dugdale is often remembered for his confrontation with referee John Perkins in 1978. It is a shame if that clouds any view of his playing ability. He was immense. With Paul Cameron alongside him at that time most teams gave up any hope of beating us down the middle.

The midfield posed a lot of problems for me. The14 club has been blessed with talent in my watching time. At their best who wouldn’t want Bruce Polyanszky, Steve Boyland, David Cramer, , Robbie Ten Broeke, or Gary Welch in their team.

So who gets the nod? Ian Ormond from that Evening Post 21st June 1922 fabulous 1977 team As John Mutimer, a big fan of Ian, put it to me several years ago, ‘all I did was win the ball and give it to the star, he did the rest....’ Alongside Ian I would have John

Mutimer, who else? John simply just got stuck in and won the ball with a real single-mindedness. At the time John was playing my friends and I were a couple of years younger than him. He was the player we wanted to be. To John’s right I would play Alan Jeffery. He was in his late thirties and still playing National League football. When he was thirty eight Glen Winter was in the team and Glen was half Alan’s age. Alan was just so competitive. Alan Jeffery and John Mutimer together would just batter you with attitude. To complete the foursome I am going a little contemporary and putting in Andy

Le Prou. In the 2005 season when we got back into the Central League he displayed wonderful form. He was quick, in the same way that Gary Welch was thirty years ago, but beat his man far more easily. On top of that Andy scored goals, good goals.

Finally, it is the matter of two strikers to set the team off. Gary Paddison and Derek Gibson- Smith immediately came to mind. Derek scored a hugely impressive nineteen times in the 1977 season. He had great first touch, presence, if a little lacking in mobility. Gary had a fearsome shot. I know as I got behind one of his shots one night, at training, and ended up with a bruised chest.

However, my front two will be Sam Malcolmson and, from 1972, Geoff Brand. Why? Well for no real reason other than two stunning strikes. Sam’s against Blockhouse Bay in 1977. Geoff’s against Eastern Suburbs in 1972. If you ever have a spare hour I can tell you about them…. In an upcoming programme Jim Blair will pick his best 15 ever Stop Out team.
