The First Word My blood is red… and gold!

It’s been a promising start for pretty much all teams in 2014. Sure it’s early days but there’s a nice positive vibe around the club. The Prems signaled their intentions with a good start against Miramar but a hiccup at a windswept and very uninviting Karori Park saw us suffer a 1-2 loss. Refreshing to be back at Hutt Park with a game against the vastly different Island Bay side from the Ole inspired teams of the last couple of seasons.

They haven’t had the best start but to be fair have come up against two of the league favourites. And Island Bay are a big club with huge player depth so today will be a massive challenge!

Our 2nd team are unbeaten and also come up against Island Bay today on #2. The 3rds have also had a good start to their season with two from two. The Werewolves can’t stop winning and they are already eyeing mid-year promotion. And the Women’s Premiers have signaled their intentions to repeat their championship winning antics of 2013 with two wins and ten unanswered goals in their first two matches of 2014. Success on the field is one thing but it’s refreshing to see the club in full swing off the filed especially at after match festivities!

The Wynton Rufer tournament for 7/8th grade and 9/10th grade is back for its 20th year and the number of clubs already entered is encouraging. The aim is to surpass the 80 odd teams that entered last year. The sea of kids, footballs and goals across Hutt Park really is a sight to behold and proves that junior football is well and truly “alive and kicking.”

Enjoy the day out at Hutt Park and enjoy our Stop Out hospitality during and after the game! 3

JOHN SHARP RIP

One of the clubs all time great players John Sharp passed away recently. Here he presents his New Zealand jersey to Peter Hartstonge at the clubs 90th celebrations in 2009. The jersey holds pride of place in the clubrooms with details of John’s NZ appearances.

Reverend Fielden Taylor (founder of Stop Out through the City Mission) said when the club was formed that "the name Stop Out does not mean anything as of now, but we will make it mean something".

5 100 games up for teenager Steph reaches 100 not out! Steph’ Bremner

April 6th, 2008 on Hutt #3 on a chilly day for Women’s football we first managed to field a team of 11 young girls. Amongst them was Steph’ Bremner, who at 13 years old was one of the younger players at a time when CF rules on age were somewhat more accommodating. We lost that game 0-2 against a “mature” Stokes Valley team but the following week achieved a 3-3 draw up at North Wellington – the 13 year old Steph’ bagging one of our goals. It was a cracker – from a narrow angle after sneaking around the back of the defence and getting close to the bye line.

Now wind the clock forward to last Sunday the 13th at Weka Park. Steph, who is still a few months shy of her 20th birthday, played her 100th senior game for Stop Out.

She once again was playing her part in a positive team result, a 7-0 demolition of the local team. Sadly she “celebrated” being Captain for the day by having to leave the field early after a nasty turn of her knee.

In between Steph’ has played her heart out for the club, Steph’ (Front row 1st left). Other “Originals” still usually in a wide role on either playing are Alana Marsh (Back row 3rd left) Amelia side of the park with an engine that just won’t quit and a level Stewart (Back row 4th left) and Brooke Mildenhall of fitness that puts most of us to (front row 2nd left) Also in the team was Tamsin Brown shame. currently playting for Massey in the Central League (Front row 3rd left) and Belinda van Noorden a current Over those years she’s been NZU20 representative (front row 4th left) part of two Premier League winning teams and in the early years won lower grade senior titles and cups as our first team ascended through the ranks.

We wouldn’t be where we are now if it wasn’t for the application and dedication of players like Steph’ (and the support of her mum & dad) and it’s a special time for all of us associated with Women’s football over the years to acknowledge her part in our success and congratulate her on a magnificent achievement.

As a footnote from the day in early 2008 there are three other girls still turning out for the club, the other “Originals” are Amelia Stewart, Brooke Mildenhall and Alana Marsh. 6

Sorting through the records as I wrote this note on Steph’ I turned up a few interesting numbers to share with you. At Weka last week the Premier team scored th the 250 goal of first team football since 2008. The 7 last weekend included a fifth career hat trick for Melanie Macdougall, one more than Mel’ Adams achieved in her time with the club (Mel’s now living on the West Island, in the village of Sydney). Past players; Nicola Bowden (twice), Laura Dobie and Tara Connell have also scored hat tricks for our first team.

Looking ahead I’d suggest coming to see the Premiers play on June 15th. Why? Well it seems to be a happy weekend for the team in recent years. On June 16th last year they recorded our biggest ever win, 12-0 vs. North Wellington which broke the th record they’d set on June 17 in 2012 when we put Waikanae to the sword and won 11-0.

Goals have been scored at the rate of 2.49 per game over the years (conceding 1.25 per game). Our top first team scorer of all time is Melanie Macdougall with 55 as of last week and there have been 34 different goal scorers (35 if we include oggies) over the past 6 years. Any mention of goals for the Women’s club isn’t complete without a tip of the hat to Nicola Bowden. Nic’ scored a staggering 128 goals in her few years with the club, 100 of them in second team football and 28 coming in first team football before she headed south to Univerity for study when she left school…yep, 128 goals while still at school in Senior football. Staggering!

Mathew Foot of Brendan Foot Motors has come10 on board as a vehicle sponsor of the Stop Out club.

It’s a warm welcome to new Men’s Sambo’s view first team coach Chris Sambrooke

Firstly as this is my first opportunity to write in the match day programme I would like to extend my thanks to the Chris, Pat and the committee for giving me to opportunity to work at such a fantastic club. Another thanks to my assistant Paul Commerford and the returning squad for a great welcome, your input and efforts have made the transition period much easier.

In terms of our approach, it was initially looked at as an “evolution rather than a revolution” in terms of the first team group as we looked to retain the majority of the 2013 Champs Premier League winners squad for 2014. However, due to various reasons, injury, an opportunity at another club etc. we unfortunately said good bye to 11 players and wish them the best if they are playing in season 2014. I am also excited with the new players that we have brought to Hutt Park, Matthew Everard, Joe Sambrooke, Enrico Meirelles, Simon Conway, Sam Zarka, Scott Williamson & Paora Porter. I’m sure they will all make a great impact in the campaign ahead.

Around the new players is also an established core from last season that have the experi- ence and the driving force to get everyone together and really push to defend our title. Whilst we can’t expect the perfect performance from day one with the amount of changes we have been going through the signs are there that it is not too far away.

The way we will play will not differ too much from last year. We have a core of technically gifted players and the ones we have brought in have been approached because of their ability to play a certain way and in a way that will complement the group. The focus will always be on our ability to maintain the ball and play attractive, attacking football. That being said, my background as a defender will always mean that the defensive structure will always be pushed to give us a sound platform from which we can play with more freedom higher up the park.

Another key focus is on developing the youth players that we have at the club and getting the Reserve team performing well and pushing for promotion. It is a fantastic result to be able to bring Stu Pyne on board to take the reserves this year. With some promising youth players and some added experience with Steve and Kev, we are looking forward to seeing them build on a very good start to the season.

- Stop Out vs Miramar MENS PREM Match reports. Chris Sambrooke 5th April, Hutt Park

First game of the season was at home to Miramar Rangers. After a strong pre-season in terms of results it was great to be at home for opening day. Miramar came with a good mix of experienced players and a host of the Team Wellington Youth team that had recently finished their summer league campaign. They played as we expected them to trying to build the play with the ball on the ground. The game started competitively but I always felt that we were in control although we couldn’t convert our good play into goals, our best chances in the first half came from Alistair Yates being one on one with the Goal keeper, who made a fantastic save albeit outside his area, after a long discussion we received a free kick but not the man advantage that should have been applied by the letter of the law. Later in the half saw a good build up from the back and through midfield to isolate Sam Zarka with his full back to provide a great cross for Regan who found the goalkeeper with a header. Late on in the first half we conceded from a corner which left the half time score 1-0 Miramar. Half time was calm and it was clear that we needed to continue playing in the same way and the chances and goals would come. We totally dominated the start

of the second half, without being able to score until

midway through the second half where a defensive mistake allowed Regan to expertly lob the goal- keeper from outside the area to make it 1-all. Miramar were rocked by this and within 3 minutes we were ahead with a tenacious run, challenge, and finish from Fiz to make it 2-1. After a year with the Reserves, James Houpt came on shortly after to bring some energy into the front third and was rewarded with being put through one on one by Guls to score with a great finish past the keeper. Miramar scored in injury time to make the score 3-2 and flatter them slightly. After a slow start the boys recovered and keet a fantastic set of results at home going.. Stop Out 3 Miramar 2. Goals: Steele, Aden, Houpt. MOM: Brandon Tai & Fisum Aden.

Waterside Karori: The first away game of the season was to Karori Park on a Stop Out vs Waterside dour wet and windy day. The team was in high spirits and looking forward to a 12th April, Karori Park big challenge so early in the season. We set ourselves up knowing what to expect in the game and weren’t disappointed. Karori were visibly up for it and were closing down space and physically strong in the tackle. When they weren’t comfortable in possession they would play very direct. This caused us problems as we were being forced back and were constantly trying to bring the ball out from our own half and left Joe isolated upfront. After about 35 minutes we conceded a corner which they scored from with a fantastic header. We had a couple of half chances after that but for the second week in a row we went in 1-0 down.

At half time we changed shape to provide some more support and options up front but went with the 12 same attitude to play positively in the second half. There was unsurprising no let-up in the intensity that Karori provided when pressuring the ball. Something that I think we lacked to match over the 90 minutes. We conceded again from a ball that we should have cleared with about 30 minutes remaining. To chase the game we went 3 at the back and brought Houpty and Yates from the bench to get at them as we knew a goal could change it. From this point we dominated a game that to be honest we had been second best in up until then. We started collecting a number of attacking set-pieces which was making it very hard for them to get out of there half. We scored via an Enrico header from a corner with about 10 minutes left to make it 2-1. We kept pressing and causing problems but unfortunately could not find the equaliser.

Result: Stop Out 1 2 Goal: Enrico Merielles Man of the Match: Jason Tipping

Stop Out vs Karori Craig Darby WOMENS PREMIER Match reports. 6th April, Hutt Park

First game and were raring to go with Hutt Park looking nice and green. We have lost a few but have made some good gains with younger players stepping up. The squad looks well balanced and there’s good depth. Waterside also look to have a young squad too but we are eager to stamp our mark. For the first 30 minutes we looked the business, playing some good football, 2-0 up after 20mins (Steph 11mins/ Christine 15mins). For the rest of the half we drop off a bit with the play becoming patchy at best. HALFTIME 2-0 UP

We move Aimee into the midfield which works well. It soon pays dividends with her scoring in the 65th minute. The game is now out of Karori’s reach finishing at 3-0.

Fulltime 3-0 (Steph/Christine/Aimee) POD 3pts Aimee

(awesome runs forward adapted well to new position) 2 pts Mel, 1pt Christine.

BIG DAY FOR STEPH BREMNER 100 GAMES FOR STOP OUT Stop Out vs Karori 13th April, Weka Park Our second game and a road trip to Raumati. The grass is long, surprise, surprise – it’s an issue with the council around the length it needs to be. The wind is strong from the SE and we start playing into it - Captain for the day Steph’s good call. There had been some chatter about this KCU side with their impressive move up from Div1 last winter. However, we dominate from the kick-off controlling possession into the wind playing some great football. Unfortunately Steph’s big day is spoiled as a bad knock to her knee in a tackle sees her carried off after 35 minutes. At halftime we are up 2-0(Mel 39mins/Aimee 44mins).

With the wind behind us the girls were unstoppable in the second half with KCU struggling to keep up. We banged in another 5 (Adele 2 in the 53rd&60th minutes, Mel completes her hat trick, 75th& 87th straddling a goal from Alysa in the 83rd.) Coach and Manager pleased with another clean sheet and good performances all around.

Fulltime 7-0 (Mel 3/Adele 2/Aimee/Alysa) POD 3pts Kathryn13 (Superb effort ran all afternoon never gave up) 2pts Mel (Hat trick) 1pt Christine.

The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out

fan Mike Barton The Worth of a Good Coach! gives us his personal view on the beautiful After Wellington Phoenix lost by four game! goals to one in their final match of the season I made a big mistake. My guess is it is one that a lot of us have made... reading a football forum online. It is not that I have a problem with people expressing their opinion. No, it is more that I wonder just how they formulated their idea in the first place. Some of the 'criticisms' of Ernie Merrick, the Phoenix coach, were eccentric to say the least. One of the more polite entries described how he had been unlucky with injuries whilst trying to introduce a new playing style... and if the same squad stayed injury free they could be title challengers. That seemed reasonable. Then the same writer, in the last sentence, wrote that Merrick would have to sign a lot of new players as 'this lot are just not good enough'. Did I miss something? My head is still spinning.

I guess what I missed is that coaching is the easiest job in the world. After all it is quite clear, from standing on any sideline, that quality coaches are absolutely everywhere... One of my friends, and a former Stop Out colleague, turned to coaching. He has some success in Wellington and then moved up to Auckland where he ended up in charge of a Northern League team. The side was ageing and but had some great youth coming through. He made the choice to shed some of the older players and get the young ones into the first team. Inevitably there was resistance. In this instance from the Chairman's son. The son was in his early thirties and my friend thought he was not contributing as he has done in the past. So the guy was spending time in the bench.

The team was doing well. It was top of the league and eventually reached the quarter finals of the but all the time my friend's coaching expertise was being called into question. The basic drift was play the Chairman's son and , some of the older brigade, and things would be even better. (Mostly according to the Chairman and his son.) Friend ignored them. He was on a mission and loving the response from his players. That is until breaking point. My friend's wife was at a match and was verbally abused by the players my friend had dropped. He simply decided that was unacceptable and when he realised that the Chairman would not support him he quit. On the spot. Of course the team with their old guard now back in their 'rightful place' soared to even greater height... showing the coach just how wrong he had been. Actually, NO, that did not happen, not even close. They lost their cup tie, that weekend, massively, then did not win again for the remainder of that season. At the season's end several of the youth players left the club...

It goes without saying, coaching is 15 easy.
