Well it was an interesting Easter break that saw the ―Prems‖ earn a last minute penalty to record an away draw at Marist. It was a game the coaching staff and players felt we did enough to win but football’s all about finishing and perhaps an away point is better than a loss!

And then for the game on Monday Besim was able to rest a couple of senior players and blood some youth as we cruised past the hapless Naenae side 4 nil. It was an emphatic victory based on our quick passing game. It’s nice to see the squad system working effectively and player depth is crucial to the success of any campaign as we work around the inevitable A broken wrist will keep player suspension and injury. “Fizz” out for a few weeks Today we host the youthful Western Suburbs team who have had a torrid time of it lately leaking a few goals. But Wests have some high quality young talent and won’t be a pushover by any means.

Besim’s match reports

Round 3 vs Waterside Karori 2-0 win (SGulley JMason)

Waterside Karori were our opponents on a wet miserable day for round 3 of the season. Desperate for a win to kick-start our season we started exceptionally well with all the players fired up for the match. Only 5 mins in n a and Fisem was upended by the keeper for a penalty and a dismissal to the keeper being the last man. Steve slotted in the pen for a much needed early advantage. 1-0. So keen to get more goals we attacked constantly and at times without patience which saw many moves frustrated and at halftime we went in with only the 1-0 lead.

Patience and spreading the field to move the ball was the aim for the 2nd half and that is what we did. Ball possession was excellent and when Steve found Jamie from a free-kick we had our 2-0 goal buffer and game over. The rain was torrential and at times the puddles were simply stopping us from adding to our tally. Our front 3 were a constant threat all game especially James Houpt who has been terrific in working his way into the starting line-up for the 1st team.

The 2-0 score was a fair reflection and a much needed victory. I was extremely pleased with the desire shown by all players to get the win and by continuing to play quality football. MOM- Blair Easthope

Round 4 vs Marist 1-1 draw (S Gulley) Kilbirnie Park was the venue for our round 4 fixture. Never an easy surface to play on we were always in for a difficult match. Playing into a stiff breeze we got the ball down and attacked Marist through the flanks where Vath constantly got in behind Marist leaving their fullback for dead.

Clear chances were wasted though with Steve, Vath and James all having good opportunities to give us the edge. Mike had a shot cleared off the line and their goalkeeper was simply having a great day. The unwritten rule that when a team doesn’t take its opportunities it gets punished was ever so true when on the stroke of halftime we conceded to go 1-0 down. I sensed that the players were so disap- pointed to be down at the half having so many chances go begging.

The 2nd half was a true disappointment with simply no rhythm to our play. Playing with no width we lacked penetration and got drawn into a battle. With time running out Nathan Canton was pushed forward as an extra attacker and was upended in the area with 3 minutes to play.

Steve slotted from the spot to give us a late equaliser and a point. I truly felt that we dropped 2 points today as we should’ve wrapped up the match by halftime.

The positive thing was that we refused to lose the match and played through to the end and were rewarded with a point which could prove valuable come the end of the season.

Chatham Cup Preliminary Round vs Naenae (SGulley3 DFussell) We travelled to Naenae Park for our prelim cup game against Naenae. The first half was played at a frantic pace with end to end attacks from both teams. Steve hit a bullet to give us the lead on 10 minutes and although further chances fell to Vath and Nash we only went in at 1-0 up.

We wanted to control things a lot more and maintain controlled dominance and after only 10 minutes of the second spell Steve had his second after a lovely dinked pass by Blair for 2-0. Soon after Damo had a shot blocked off the line by their defender with the use of an arm and a red card. Steve dispatched the pen for a 3-0 lead. Damo wasn’t to be outdone though and found himself on the score sheet for his first goal of the season and 4-0.

With 15 minutes to play we introduced 2 youngsters who have come through the grades at Stop Out. James Marsh and Alex McDonald junior had a taste of first team football having last season played JPL!!! The future looks bright. The team perfor- mance was excellent today and hopefully can be used as a catalyst for more triumphs this season. MOM- Steve Gulley

Sam Blackburn has joined Stop Out Sam a mercurial talent comes to us from the University of Mobile in Alabama where he has been studying on a Football scholarship.

Sam represented New Zealand u20s in 2009 and has played in the NZFC for Team in 2008 and 2009. Sam playing for Team Nicknamed ‘Ginger Ronaldo’ is indeed a huge compliment Wellington in 2009 and one deserving of Sam’s tremendous skills. We look forward to many fine displays by Sam as he sets foot on the magical surface of Hutt Park.

The Capital Premier Women’s ALEX MOORE 1 team remain top after 4 games without defeat and a massive Women Div 2: 20 goals for and just 2 against. Not bad for a side that started Nth Wgtn vs Stop Out 2010 in Division 1.The conservative aim was for a top half finish . It’s still early days in the season and no one in the Sun 1st May -11.30am player or management group is getting carried away but the TE WHAEA results speak for themselves. Women Div 4: This is a very talented and determined bunch pushing hard Brooklyn vs Stop Out to achieve success for the club. And so far its looking good! In 2011 the clubs “new look” Women’s football squad has grown to 3 teams. Since 2008 there have been a number of stalwarts who have been integral to that success!

So far in the appearance stakes the leaders are Brooke Mildenhall (46) Steph Bremner (45), Alana Marsh and Amelia Stewart (41) followed by Nicola Bowden (38) Sophie Burley (37) Steph McMillan (36) and Gabby Ranford (32). And you’ll find they're all teenagers! Just imagine how many “club caps” they will achieve if they play into their 40’s?

Nicola gets a hat trick, Alysa swooped onto a ball Porirua C 4 0 0 4 1 18 0 from slightly wide and drilled the 4th goal long, low and hard into the corner . Just reward for superb support play earlier. Cathy and Amelia resisting the temptation to kick long, played wide to either Jess or Danielle and again goals were con- structed from the back.

Notable was the way in which Cathy, Amelia and Gig directed play and Jess and Danielle executed the plan . Danielle had 70% of play down her flank and made Island Bay pay for it. Brooke the smiling assas- sin on the end of it and backing up with stout defence. Rachel plus wind was never going to be caught only Emma using her speed could keep up and the two worked in tandem.

Letesha jumped on the right mid field and gave Island Bay no chance , crunching tackles and putting dangerous ball back into the middle. What few chances Island Bay got they took up the middle and met the wall of Gig, Cathy and Amelia. Louise joined the attack and holding ball up on the edge of the box attracted too much attention and Nicola ran in unopposed for goal no 5. Just prior to half time Alysa delivers her trademark ball through the defence and Nicola left foot curls one around the keeper—6 nil.

Second half turning into the wind didn't appear to slow our momentum at first Nicola getting a double Hat trick 7 nil , and ruing many missed chances to make it 8, 9 or 10 later. The game was effectively over and followed a pattern of extended build up followed by huge kicks down field from the keeper to anchor play at our end. Eventually Island Bay were rewarded with a goal and as promised Natasha given a re- prieve sent wide for a run. With no volunteers to take her place, Emma was reluctantly badgered into Gloves and a blue shirt. Natasha’s speed and strength took the attack to Island Bay but the goals dried up. The rest of the half was groundhog day, more Stop Out total football followed by mindless Island Bay booting downfield towards our goal. The tactic kept pressure on Danielle ,Cathy, Amelia and Jess but a drop off of focus, perhaps boredom from our front 5 resulted in a second half score of 1 all.

Player of the Day, Nicola 3 points for a ruthless display in front of goal, Dan- ielle 2 points for a massive work rate We and and play maker of the day. " Emma 1 11 point for putting the " E " in Team and a typical selfless, honest effort- again!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggghhhhwoooooooooo!!!! Another 2 weeks have gone by and more great results for the Werewolves. We have started the season really well still unde- feated but with a couple scratchy draws. We have a large squad this year and every- one is putting in 100% i am really proud of all the boys. 2 more games to go for the first round but this is how the following 2 weeks have gone.

Surprisingly enough it wasn't your typical cold and wet day at Wakefield park but the field was nothing to brag about. I have seen goat tracks that look better and the hump in the middle didn't do much justice for anyone. We started off well moving the ball around nicely but the intensity from the last 2 games wasn't quite there.

They never really looked like scoring and when they got the ball it was because we gave it to them. The last 10 minutes of the first half were painful and with a few silly mistakes we gave away a very soft goal in the last minute of the half.

After an inspiring half time speech we went back out there and got on with it. We had a small breeze behind us in the 2nd half and Thomas was doing a great job between the sticks as they had a few good attacking chances which he made look like nothing when he saved them. They gave away a stupid free Kick 40 yards out and Blair put- ting an amazing floating ball in right on the penalty spot was nodded home by Dave to give us the Draw.

I was really happy with the Div 11 P W D L GF GA Pt way we came back out after the half and lifted ourselves Karori Meke 5 4 1 0 18 6 13 that's something we didn't do very well last year. After giving away a shocking goal in the last minute of the first half he came out in the se- cond half and made it up to the team by running all day and winning heaps of ball. Well done Keith. Dick of the Day went to Michael Burt after self destruct- ing with 5 minutes to go and he even had the other team con- vinced he had just broken out of a mental hospital.

Today we host the Karori Stags a team we really enjoyed playing against last season. They would be one of the fairest teams in all of the Wellington competitions and we are looking forward to the game.

Today is a special day for our team it is the 25th birthday of our dare friend Tim Turner. Tim was a huge part of our team and the founder of our name "The Werewolves". It is also coming up 2 years since Tim passed on and we will be celebrating this on the 28th of May at the Club rooms so please feel free to come sit with us and join us for a drink or three. The 2 years have really flown by since this tragic event and on behalf of the Stop Out Werewolves i would like to say Happy Birthday Tim and that we will never forget you mate. Your always with us when we are playing on the field and especially when we are sitting in the club rooms having a cold one.

Good Luck to everyone today and we will see you all in the club rooms after the game

The Last Word! Stop Out fan Michael Barton shares his views on football!

(This report was written after watching our Cup win over Naenae)

Morality and obligation in football?

Albert Camus was a French-Algerian goalkeeping philosopher who attempted merging two of the world’s greatest muses, sport and existential thought. Probably his most famous quote is “All I know most surely about morality and obligations, I owe to football.” Whilst watching Stop Out playing Naenae in the Chatham Cup today I think, just think, I caught a glimpse of what it was he was talking about. Firstly, what is obligation in the sense of the football team? A dictionary defines obligation as “the condition of being morally or legally bound to do something”. Clearly, within our sphere of the game we are not legally bound to play. So then in the team sense is the obligation the commitment to train and to be there? Is it to remember that you are part of the group and not an individual? Is it to remem- ber that you have agreed to play and not been forced to play? Now what is morality in our football sense? The dictionary, to go to it again, defines morality as “principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behaviour. So I would argue that for us that morality is respect and observation for the rules of the game and the same that is respect, for team discipline.

So how does that relate to the game today? It might be safe to say that the opposing player who was sent off breached obligation and morality. He failed the obligation to his team, as the contest is eleven against eleven, when he ceded the player advantage to Stop Out. He failed the morality test because the game has a set of rules which he breached in an attempt to secure his team an unfair advantage. To go back to Albert Camus. In 2008 a new goalkeeping academy was established in France, founded upon the principles of sporting excellence and morality propounded by him. With the support of patron Fabien Barthez, the former France and Marseille goalkeeper, the facility has stated that it aims to put education and philosophy ahead of the relentless pursuit of simply “winning”. The academy founders talk very much in terms Camus would have related to, “Every time a child saves a ball it’s similar to every difficult situation they will face in life. Every time they jump to catch a ball, or go into a tackle, they need courage and commitment, and it’s similar in life.” Words that are well worth remembering. Finally, and as an end note. The sight of the two youmgsters -McDonald and Marsh coming on late in the game was also a bit of a shock. Here am I, and I suspect one or two other spectators, having something of a mid life crisis and they came on. Their combined ages are only a margin more than half of mine. They both carried themselves well with confidence and composure. That begs the question. Is confidence a matter of nature or nurture?15 Michael Barton
