No Snap Polls, Macedonian PM Says

here will not be any snap polls in the country after Several Hague Trials November’s NATO summit, Macedonian Prime Minister TNikola Gruevski told local media in response to opposition calls for early elections. The prime minister and head of the ruling centre-right VMRO- DPMNE party said on Monday that “such a thing was not planned”. Gruevski is currently in his second term in office after winning the 2008 snap polls. His party holds about half of the seats in parliament. At a protest rally on Sunday, the opposition Social Democrats called for the parliament to be dissolved directly following the NATO summit scheduled for November. They said that elections before that date could harm the country’s chances of joining the alliance and progress in its EU bid if there is a breakthrough in the name talks with Greece. Speaking about the Athens-Skopje name row, Gruevski main- tained an optimistic tone, saying that a solution to the long

Neighbourhood news in brief Neighbourhood news standing spat is “probably possible, if there is will, understand- ing and respect by the other side for what is considered [Macedonia’s] state and national interest”. He reiterated that the UN mediator in the dispute, Matthew Nimetz, had intensified his contacts with both sides, but that there was still no clear signal as to whether he would present a fresh and concrete proposal soon. Gruevski noted two major issues that have been taking up most of his time: “The global economic crisis and its impact in Macedonia as well as the issues arising with the name dispute which obstruct our plans for NATO and EU integration. These are the two major issues and we will remain committed in the future to seeking solutions”.

Serbia Shown Without Kosovo on World Cup Map

he world football federation FIFA has published a map of Serbia without Kosovo in the official bulletin for this Tyear's World Cup in South Africa. The authors of the brochure, Nikolaus Eberl and Herman Schoonbee, wrote that Serbia has a population of 7.38 million, which corresponds to the number of people living in the country

Culture in brief Culture without Kosovo. The map comes as a surprise for some because FIFA, football's global governing body, has refused to recognise the Football Association of Kosovo because Kosovo is not recognised by the United Nations. After Kosovo declared unilateral independence in February 2008, Serbia, which bitterly opposes the independence declara- tion, took the case to the International Court of Justice. The Court's public hearings lasted from December 1 to 11, with judges expected to deliver an opinion this summer. Meanwhile, Kosovo has been recognised by 69 out of 192 UN member states, 22 out of 27 EU member states and 24 out of 28 NATO member states. Official maps of Europe, however, still present Serbia includ- ing Kosovo. Representatives of Kosovo’s Football Association and FIFA and UEFA (the Union of European Football Associations) met last November to negotiate the country’s footballing future on the international stage but no progress was made on Kosovo’s key demand – membership in the international football community. The rest of the text on Serbia in the brochure describes the footballing results of Serbia and the former Yugoslavia in previ- ous events, customs of the country, favourite dishes and drinks. According to the brochure, pointing a finger at someone is not recommended in Serbia, while hanging around on public squares when drunk is considered distasteful behaviour.
