July Information Where in New Jersey? By Brian & Phyllis Stratton Our first ever “Where in NJ” was the IFF Creative Center located on Rt. 36 South in Hazlet. Correct answers were received from, Peter McIntyre, Marlene Letwenski, Joseph Durnya, Peggy Yuhas, Bill Mattsson, Jean Marie Pelkowski, Andrea Hulsart, Tom Hulsart, Ed English, Maureen Enright, Terry Erickson, and Pat and Bill Scully. Thanks to everyone who played and best of luck with this month’s challenge. Here are some interesting facts about IFF. You may not realize that you have products in your home and work that were developed by IFF, their research has produced many unique scents and tastes that can be found in common cleaning supplies, household goods, foods, beverages, perfumes and beauty products. IFF is short for International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc., a global company with headquarters in New York City and three locations in NJ: the Sales Offices for Flavors in South Brunswick, the Plant for Flavors and Fragrances and Research & Development Greenhouse & Complex in Union Beach and the Plant for Fragrances and Creative Center in Hazlet. The Union Beach and Hazlet structures are directly across from each other on Route 36. The pictured structure which houses the Creative Center was designed by architect Der Scutt in 1985. Construction was completed in 1991, Governor Florio and other dignitaries attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new building. It is clad almost entirely in glass with an interior diagonal corridor with open skylights. The structure cost five million dollars to build and it was a last minute decision by IFF to move the structure from the Union Beach side (Rt36 North) to the Hazlet side (Rt 36 South) of the highway. IFF has been a New Jersey employer since 1958.

How to Cope with Heat Emergencies The summer sun can lift our spirits and warm our bodies. Every year summer also brings heat exhaustion and death when people get too hot, for too long. When the heat and humidity both rise above 90 degrees, about four to ten cases of heat-related illness show up each day in the emergency room at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston,” says Stephen Bohan, M.D., clinical director of the department. “That’s as high as any other single complaint.” Heat exhaustion is the most common syndrome complicating physical exertion in warm or hot weather. Both the degree of outside temperature and the intensity of physical activity play important roles. Intense physical exertion in moderately warm weather may be as dangerous in this regard as moderate exertion in hot weather. Heavy sweating resulting in dehydration, excessive hyperthermia, and failing cardiovascular functions causes symptoms of heat exhaustion. On average, 371 people die each year in the U.S. of “excessive heat exposure” according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention statistics from 1979 through 1997, the most recent available. The death rate among people age 65 and older is three times the average. The age groups most adversely affected by the heat are small children, the elderly, and those infirmed and bothered by mental illness. Among people who are not elderly or impaired, the most common heat emergencies occur when people exercise at mid-day, between 10 a.m. and 3 m. on hot humid days, and don’t drink enough fluids. The body’s cooling mechanism depends on evaporating perspiration, but if the humidity is really high that can’t happen and those people become rapidly hypothermic. As always, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after exercising; wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. If you feel not only hot, but lightheaded or weak as well, it may be time to seek help. Fishing Flashes By Teo “Weebles” Weber

Salt Water Fluke fishing in the bay has seemed to slow up. There are still enough shorts around, plus a few nice keepers, but the fish are moving out into the ocean. The bay waters are too warm. There are loads of Peanut Bunkers all over the bay. Small Blues about a pound are chasing them. In the surf, especially to our south, there are short Fluke and increasing numbers of King Fish. There are sharks to be had at night. Check the law on keeping them. Most species must be released. Party Boat Blue fishing is very slow in fact; they are fishing for anything they can catch. What Blues they do catch are small. There are a few Benito around and the large numbers of Chub Mackerel that they had been catching has dwindled. Bottom fishing on the Party Boats now consists of Porgies, a few Sea Bass and a few Trigger fish mixed in. Blowfish are in Barnegat Bay. Fresh Water The heat has taken its toll! Low water and heat have put a damper on fishing in upstate lakes and ponds. Carp and Catfish are being caught, but decent fishing for Bass is mostly in the evening hours. There are some Pike in the Passaic River off Route 46, if you want to travel that far. Hybrid Stripers are hitting at Spruce Run. You will need a boat, the bait and it’s on evening bite.
