Norwest Holst Seven Dials, Covent Garden The London and Northern Home Counties region of Norwest Holst’s Building division has successfully completed an £11.5 million contract to refurbish and extend a fire damaged building at Seven Dials in London’s Covent Garden.

The five-floor building was formerly a Victorian warehouse that suffered extensive fire damage five years ago, leaving only the lower floors and outside walls, including a Grade II listed façade, which had to be partly demolished and restored.

A new glazed lantern brings daylight into the centre of the top floor, which has been doubled in size by the construction of a glass conservatory.

Work was undertaken with ground floor retail, first floor retail and basement restaurant tenants in occupation.

Stradform Limited Albion Street Nursing Home, Newport

Stradform Limited has been awarded a £5 million contract to design and construct a 70 bed community nursing home in Newport for Linc Cymru Housing Association Limited.

This is the second contract Stradform has undertaken for this client. The first comprised a £5.2 million contract to design and construct an extraCare Scheme at Usk View, Newport.

Crispin & Borst National Society for Epilepsy

The Thames Valley region of Crispin & Borst is underway with a £3.9 million contract for the National Society for Epilepsy. The project includes the construction of a new twenty- bed care home and an eight-bed extension to the existing facility at Queen Elizabeth House in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire. The Epilepsy Centre will remain operational throughout the 48 week construction period.

PEL Interiors House of Fraser PEL Interiors has successfully completed a £12 million contract for the fit-out of all seven floors of the 18,580m2 House of Fraser anchor store in Belfast.

A further contract has been awarded to the Company following the success of the Belfast project. This latest contract is worth £2.6 million and includes the refurbishment of the atrium on all floor levels of the House of Fraser store in London’s Oxford Street.

PEL Interiors Gordon Ramsay

Work has now been completed on a £2.2 million fine dining restaurant, situated in Terminal 5 at . The contract included full service installation and feature lighting rafts as well as retail display units and a reception area.

PEL Interiors Mercedes Benz

PEL Interiors has been awarded the £420,000 contract to refurbish an existing Mercedes Benz Dealership in Tamworth.

PEL Interiors M&S BP Simply Foods

The Building Services division of PEL Interiors has won the next phase of the BP Connect roll out. The five month contract comprises the complete fit-out of seven BP Connect sites involving the insertion of Marks & Spencer Simply Food stores.

PEL Interiors McDonalds

PEL Interiors has been employed by McDonalds to incorporate a new alfresco dining concept as part of a phased re-branding exercise. The Company has been awarded the contract to refurbish 18 restaurant sites across the UK, to incorporate a softer, more welcoming themed environment, with the introduction of timber slats and green frames.

Norwest Holst Tank Museum, Dorset f

The Southern region of Norwest Holst’s Building division has reached a milestone on the £10 million contract to design and build a new 5,000m2 display hall at The Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset.

A control tower features prominently as part of the new facility and will provide the point of control for activities involving tanks and pyrotechnics in the external arena.

The stainless steel top section of the tower, forming the observation platform, was recently lifted into position using a 250 tonne crane. The 13.5 tonne pod was fabricated in two halves and transported to site where it was welded together and clad before being placed on top of the lower section of the tower.

A month and a half away from completion, the new display hall will house the biggest and best collection of tanks in the world.

Norwest Holst Shannon’s Mill, Walsall dc

The West Midlands region of the Building division has received a Built in Quality award for the ASDA Store forming part of the Shannon’s Mill development in Walsall, a £21 million mixed use development contract awarded by St Modwen Properties (Norton & Proffitt Developments) Limited.

The contract also includes the construction of 41 residential units, which are nearing completion, a number of small retail units and a 1,000 space multi-storey car park over four levels.

This £45 million contract includes the design and construction of a new Sixth Form college in Luton. The new 15,800m2 building will be constructed within the grounds of the existing college which will remain in full occupation throughout the contract.

Norwest Holst East Barnet School

This £26 million contract is for the design and construction of a new school in East Barnet. The 12,500m² school will be situated to the south of the existing building, allowing construction to take place with minimal disruption to the 140 staff and 1,350 pupils.

VINCI Investments Newport Schools PFI f

Newport City Council and Newport School Solutions Limited, a VINCI Investments joint venture company, have signed a PFI contract for the design, construction and operation of the new Glan Usk Primary School on the Glebelands site in Newport, South Wales. This will replace the existing Durham Road Infants and Junior Schools and Rockfield Nursery.

The South West and Wales region of Norwest Holst’s Building division has been awarded a £14.9 million contract to design and construct the school and the Building & Facilities division of Crispin & Borst has been awarded an £8.1 million contract to fit-out and provide support services at the school for a period of 25 years upon completion in late 2009.

Norwest Holst’s Civil Engineering division is currently underway with a £4 million contract which includes site remediation and preparation in time for construction to begin later this year.

The Thames Valley region of Crispin & Borst has completed a £5.75 million contract for the construction of a new 660 pupil primary school in Ruislip, Middlesex for the Westminster Roman Catholic Archdiocese Trustees.

Norwest Holst Petchey Academy The Building division of Norwest Holst has completed a £27 million contract to design and build a 10,000m2, three-storey academy in Hackney, East London. The academy will provide an additional 1,200 secondary education places and will specialise in healthcare, catering and medical sciences.

The project is sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation which was established in 1999 by Jack Petchey, a successful East London entrepreneur. The aim of the Foundation is to allocate grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11-25.

The external façade of the building has been constructed mainly from curtain walling comprising glass panels in three shades of blue which represent the Petchey brand colours.

The Civil Engineering division of Norwest Holst is underway with a contract for Hammerson UK Properties Plc near London’s Liverpool Street Station.

The 36 week contract includes the construction of a 500 tonne steel bridge deck which will span the existing railway lines outside the station.

Ten sections of the bridge deck, each weighing approximately 55 tonnes, were lifted into position using a 1,000 tonne crane (the largest in the UK), along with 236 tonnes of steel plate girders and box girders during a 52 hour possession over the first May Bank Holiday weekend.

Crispin & Borst STOP 24 Motorway Services The South East region of Crispin & Borst has completed this £11.3 million flagship facility for Henry Boot Developments. Located at junction 11 of the M20, the facility provides the largest motorway services amenity in the UK.

The tapered steel frame, Flowcrete in-situ terrazzo flooring and innovative structure provide a high class environment for the public to enjoy the 15 retail and restaurant outlets. Extensive soil stabilisation and ground improvement works were required on the 16 acre site to transform the poor soils present into a suitable bearing strata for the building and for car/coach parking.

The Civil Engineering division of Norwest Holst carried out the £3.5 million road works contract which formed part of the overall scheme.

Crispin & Borst Spital Square c

As part of the Spitalfields redevelopment project in the City of London, the London region of Crispin & Borst is constructing 14 high specification apartments over four floors as part of a contract worth £2.3 million. The one and two-bedroomed development will be clad in terracotta baguette tiles with a sedum roof.

The Company is also undertaking a refurbishment contract on the adjacent Grade II St Botolph’s Hall building which is being brought back into use to provide an atmospheric restaurant environment. The ground floor of the residential development also forms part of the overall restaurant complex.

There is a clear space between the apartment building and the Hall which incorporates a single storey glass structure with steel columns and glass beams which will link the two sections of the restaurant together.

Norwest Holst RAF Northolt c

The London and Northern Home Counties region of Norwest Holst’s Building division is underway with a £106 million contract to redevelop RAF Northolt in Middlesex. The contract forms part of Defence Estates’ Project MoDEL (Ministry of Defence Estate in London).

A number of buildings are now nearing completion including brand new accommodation for 222 Junior Ranks and 40 Officers, as well as five new hangers, offices for 32 Squadron, offices and archive facilities for Air Historical Branch and Defence Aviation Safety Centre and a fire station.

2008 will see the demolition of a number of existing buildings in order to construct a further seven facilities, including further new accommodation for service people. Work this year will also include the complete refurbishment of the existing Officers’ Mess which is a listed building. Work is on schedule for completion towards the end of 2009.

Crispin & Borst Metropolitan Police f

The Building and Facilities division of Crispin & Borst has installed an eco friendly heating and hot water system for the Metropolitan Police. The installation consists of 385 roof mounted photovoltaic modules which will drive six inverters connected directly to the building’s electricity supply. The system will provide 40,500 kWh of energy per year.

Stradform Limited South Wales Police Authority d

Stradform Limited is underway with the construction of the new Divisional Police Headquarters at Cardiff Bay, a £17 million contract being undertaken for South Wales Police Authority.

The six floor headquarters facility is the largest capital project ever undertaken by South Wales Police and provides a state of the art building with the latest technology. The 60 cell custody suite is one of the largest in the country and features the most up to date electronic control and surveillance systems.

Norwest Holst Innovative Remediation Technology

Complementing the Civil Engineering capability of Norwest Holst, Norwest Holst Environmental (NHE) specialises in the remediation of brownfield sites.

Central to the division’s capability is an innovative soil washing plant which uses a high pressure water system and several mechanical separating stages to treat soils, even with high fines content which are prevalent in the UK.

A full size plant is capable of treating up to 60 tonnes of contaminated materials per hour, producing the following reusable by-products:

• Fine sand • Coarse sand and gravel • A small percentage of fines in a sludge (for disposal) • A concentrated liquor for safe and cost effective disposal

The cost for excavation and disposal of hazardous soil materials is typically £85-£150 per tonne. Clean up costs using the Norwest Holst soil washing plant could be as little as £15-£35 per tonne.

Norwest Holst Veolia Environmental Services

Among the projects recently awarded to Norwest Holst in the waste management sector are three for Veolia Environmental Services:

Hollingdean Material Recovery Facility and Waste Transfer Station c The Southern region of the Building division is underway with a £9.7 million contract which includes the design, construction, completion, testing and commissioning of a combined Material Recovery Facility and Waste Transfer Station at Hollingdean in Brighton.

Once fully operational, the Hollingdean facility will handle up to 160,000 tonnes of waste per annum, separating recyclable materials and transporting the remaining waste to the incinerator.

Nottinghamshire Waste PFI The Civil Engineering division has been awarded two contracts by Veolia ES Nottinghamshire Limited, the largest of which is an £8 million contract for the design and construction of a Materials Recycling Facility in Mansfield. The facility will have the capacity to process 85,000 tonnes of household waste per annum.

The second contract is worth £1 million and involves the design and construction of a Household Waste Recycling Centre in Worksop. The contracts form part of Veolia’s PFI agreement with Nottinghamshire County Council to deliver waste management services. As well as the construction of the facilities, the contracts include associated activities such as earthworks, infrastructure and the provision of building services.
