  • City-REDI Policy Briefing Series
City-REDI Policy Briefing Series March Image Image 2018 Part B Carillion’s Collapse: Consequences Dr Amir Qamar & Professor Simon Collinson Carillion, the second-largest construction firm in the UK, were proud of their commitment to support regional growth and small-scale suppliers. As part of this commitment they directed 60% of project expenditure to local economies. Following the collapse of the firm, this positive multiplier effect became a significant, negative multiplier effect, particularly damaging to small-scale suppliers in the construction industry. The aim of this policy brief is to examine the consequences of Carillion’s demise, many of which are only now surfacing. One of the fundamental lessons that we can learn from Carillion’s collapse is about these ‘contagion’ effects. As we saw in the 2008 financial crisis, the businesses that underpin the economic health of the country are connected and strongly co-dependent. When a large flagship firm falls it brings down others. This does not mean we need more state intervention. But it does mean we need more intelligent state intervention. One of the fundamental lessons that the Government can learn from the Carillion episode is that it has a significant responsibility as a key customer, using public sector funds for public sector projects, to monitor the health of firms and assess the risks prior to issuing PPI and other contracts. 1 Introduction The collapse of Carillion, the second-largest construction firm in the UK, has had a significant, negative knock-on effect, particularly on small-scale suppliers in the industry. In total, Carillion was comprised of 326 subsidiaries, of which 199 were in the UK.

  • Annual Report Message to Shareholders Alimentation Couche-Tard - Annual Report 2011
Couche-Tard 2011 Annual Report Message to Shareholders Alimentation Couche-Tard - Annual Report 2011 STRONG, STABLE AND SUSTAINABLE In a notoriously fragmented industry, Couche-Tard continues to set the standard for strength of performance, sustainability, and stability. We continued to grow profits organically in 2011, despite the ongoing challenges of the marketplace, advanced our in- store efficiency still further, and pruned more underperforming assets from the network. The balance sheet has never been stronger thanks to our capital management. It has been rewarded with investment grade corporate credit rating issued by Standard & Poor’s. These encouraging trends are apparent in growth rates over the past five years: the network has been growing at 4% compound annual growth, merchandise and service sales are growing faster at 8% and EBITDA faster yet at 11%. Motor fuel volume has been growing at 11.5% and the outlook is promising for improved and more stable fuel margins. These are the progressions that create true value for our shareholders. They are a tribute to the skills, imagination, and hard work of every member of our large family. Double-Digit Earnings Growth in 2011 Net earnings grew more than 22% to $370.1 million, equal to $2 per share or $1.97 diluted. This is the third straight year of double digit growth. If we look at this on a comparable basis year over year, stripping out exceptional items, the growth in 2011 reached 31%. The 15.4% increase in revenues to $19 billion was due mainly to a 20.7% increase in motor fuel revenues coming mostly from higher prices at the pump.

HSE Health & Safety Executive A survey of UK approaches to sharing good practice in health and safety risk management Prepared by Risk Solutions for the Health and Safety Executive CONTRACT RESEARCH REPORT 412/2002 HSE Health & Safety Executive A survey of UK approaches to sharing good practice in health and safety risk management E Baker Risk Solutions 1st floor, Central House 14 Upper Woburn Place London, WC1H 0JN United Kingdom The concept of good practice is central to HSE’s approach to regulation of health and safety management. There must therefore be a common understanding of what good practice is and where it can be found. A survey was conducted to explore how industry actually identifies good practice in health and safety management, decides how to adopt it, and how this is communicated with others. The findings are based primarily on a segmentation of the survey results by organisation size, due to homogeneity of the returns along other axes of analysis. A key finding is that there is no common understanding of the term good practice or how this is distinguished from best practice. Regulatory interpretation of good practice is perceived to be inconsistent. Three models were identified: A) Large organisations, primarily in privatised industries, have effective Trade Associations where good practice is developed and guidance disseminated industry-wide. B) Large and medium-sized organisations in competitive industries have ineffective trade associations. They develop good practices in-house and may only share these with their competitors when forced to do so. C) Small organisations have little contact with their competitors.

NOTES ON THE FINANCIAL TIMES–ACTUARIES EQUITY SHARE INDICES IN 1989 BY J. C. H. BRUMWELL, M.A., F.I.A. ABSTRACT The process of updating company classificationscontinued. Seventy Index constituents were replaced during 1989,mostly as a result of takeovers, not quite a record. Only 46 replaced them, reflecting the difficulty in finding suitable new non-industrial constituents. The Mining Finance group was discontinued, but Engineering–Aerospaceand Water were introduced. Shipping & Transport was renamed Transport. KEYWORDS FT Actuaries Index; Ordinary Shares; London Market 1. Classification of Stock Exchange Securities by Industry The original classifications were set out in the 1970 note in this series (J.I.A. 97, 111–12). Subsequent amendments were set out in the notes for 1971–74, 1977, 1979–80 and 1983–88 (J.I.A. 97, 403; 99, 89; 100, 109; 101,199; 105, 85; 107, 81; 108, 85; 111, 203; 112, 87; 113, 173; 114, 143; 115, 333 and 116, 179). On 1 July 1989, a new category No. 21 (Aerospace) was introduced and 12 companies were reclassified in it from, with one exception, category No. 27 (Miscellaneous Mechanical Engineering). At the end of 1989, category No. 78 (Foreign Banks) was discontinued. All companies so classified joined category No. 77 (Banks), and the definition of the latter category was expanded additionally to include that of the former. The name of category No. 85, ‘Merchant Banks’, was simplified by dropping the words ‘and Issuing Houses’. Minor amendments were also made to the definitions of five categories during 1989. As a result of the quarterly meetings of the Classification Sub-Committee of the Joint Investment and Index Committee, the classifications of 56 companies were altered.
