TRANSPORT - COMMUNICATION At the crossroads of Europe’s main transport routes, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is serviced by the following first class facilities:  A network of airports used by more than 10,678,569 commercial passengers in 2016: Lyon-Saint Exupéry (9,554,687 passengers), Clermond-Ferrand Auvergne (399,149), Grenoble Isère (304,256), Chambéry (208,923), Saint Etienne (155,818), Aurillac (31,175) and Le Puy Loudes (7,005).  TGV trains: 22.5 million passengers in 2016.  A dense network close to 1 700 km of motorways linked to the Swiss and Italian networks.

With numerous logistic platforms, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a major hub for the flow of goods:  Road: 233.9 million tons in 2016.  River and river-maritime: 2.5 million tons handled by public harbours in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in 2016. Total traffic in the Rhône- river basin amounted to 1.28 billion tonnes* km. ECONOMY

In terms of GDP, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the second French region and the fifth largest region in the European Union*. It has a solid industrial base as well as a substantial tertiary sector, with strong tourism activity. The region is well equipped with economic decision-making centres, making it attractive to foreign investors. At of the economic infrastructure, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry represent 377,000 industrial, commercial and service establishments. *According to list NUTS 2 Eurostat

⇢⇢Main industrial branches Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a major industrial area in terms of what it contributes to the value added of French industries as well as its reception of establishments in this sector. Its areas of activity are diversified, with intermediate goods and equipment industries being highly represented, and is widely open to export. The region boasts many strengths in the high-tech industries such as machines, digital technology, electronic components, energy, pharmaceuticals and medical technology, bar turning, rubber/pneumatics, plastics and eco-technology. The Michelin group, with its headquarters at Clermont-Ferrand, is the largest regional employer.

⇢⇢Main commercial activities Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes boasts a broad range of businesses. Despite the tendency of business hubs to be centralised, sales outlets are spread over a large area of the regional territory (3,052 municipalities count at least one shop, corresponding to 75% of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes municipa- lities), strongly contributing to the quality of life of its inhabitants. Many leading national retail chains were founded in the region. Intercompany trade, highly influenced by the industrial nature of the region, is another major sector in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

⇢⇢Main activities in the tertiary sector The service industries play a predominant role in terms of value added and employment. They represent 2/3 of new business creations. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes offers a wide range of services (engineering, computer services, temporary work, etc.) to businesses and financial establishments in France and around the world. It is also one of the main French hubs for transport and logistics. Tourism contributes to the development of services for individuals.

⇢⇢Assets for tourism Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the 8th leading region in Europe in terms of nights spent by tourists. It is the third destination in France chosen by French tourists. ⇢⇢Higher education Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has 8 universities, 50 private Schools and 69 graduate and post-graduate institutes. Three major communities (Lyon, Clermont and Grenoble-Alpes universities) gather these various academic institutions. These centers of Lyon and Grenoble are labeled “Initiative Excellence” (IDEX) and Clermont Auvergne carries the project I-SITE “Cap 20-25”. ⇢⇢Research and innovation Six major research centres are located in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The region boasts strengths in many fields of research such as health and biotechnologies, environment, chemistry and materials, digital technology, engineering, nanotechnology, energy and Earth sciences. 35,800 researchers (in FTEs) are working in public and corporate research centers. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is home to 15 competitiveness clusters out of the 71 projects selected in France. Companies in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes increasing spending to €6.6 billion in R&D (2014), worth 13.8% of national spending or 2.7% of regional GDP. It is carried out 2/3 by companies. 16% of French companies receiving a research tax credit are located in the region. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is ranked fourth among the regions of the European Union for the number of European patent applications. 2,812 patents issued were from Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 20.5% of the total for France.
