In that book, the authors discussed the principles of cultural history, not conning themselves to the obvious question ‘What is cultural history?’, but moving beyond it to investigate both the premises and the results of cultural history. How did cultural history to come into existence? How does it look at its objects? As such, the book was a continuation of the introspective process at the Department of Cultural History, the previous expression of which was the book Kulttuurihistoria. Johdatus tutkimukseen2. is introspection is a consequence of the strong anti-dogmatic tra- ditions of the Department, in which each researcher is encouraged to formulate his/her own answers to the question ‘What is cultural history and how it should be conducted?’ Unsurprisingly, such a question has no single answer. Research elds – be they popular culture, spatial practices, or constructions of identity – carry their own jargon and conceptual categor- ies, the nuanced expressions of which often escape those not well versed in them; and research traditions regarding di erent eras and geographical locations, be they sixteenth century England, nineteenth century Finland, classical antiquity, or the American south-west, carry with them their own grand narratives that need to be appropriated, challenged, contested – or rewritten. erefore, ‘What is cultural history, and how it should be 1 ‘ e Gaze of Cultural History’, edited by Heli Rantala and Sakari Ollitervo, Turku, k&h, 2010. 2 ‘Cultural History. Cultural history is di erent for someone who is studying gendered constructions of identity in sixteenth century Prussia as compared with someone studying the everyday spatial practices in a South American metropolis of 21st century. And yet, each of these researchers will recognise the ‘cultural history’ in the works of the other. It is perhaps because of this introspective process that it was decided that an international version of the book should also be produced, not so much to impress on others our own view of cultural history, but more in order to invite others to take part in these discussions. e authors of the original book were invited to express their interest in preparing an English-language version of their article. An anonymous board of referees then helped the editors to choose a selection of essays that should be included in the nal book; my thanks go to the members of that board who took on themselves the thankless task of choosing which of the excellent contributions to leave out and which should be included. At this point, Prof. Bruce Johnson was invited to take part in the editing process. e individual essays were then submitted to further peer review, the results of which are seen in the eight articles appearing in this book. Consequently, this is not the same book as the the one edited by Heli Rantala and Sakari Ollitervo but nonetheless it would not exist without its Finnish-language predecessor. is collection of essays did not emerge out of thin air, but from a ‘point of convergence’ which was provided by the excellent editorial work on the original articles. Our grateful thanks to Rantala and Ollitervo for their work. Without Bruce Johnson, this book would be much less of a book than it is. Harri Kiiskinen viii List of Contributors Mervi Autti (PhD) is working now at the Unit for Gender Studies, Uni- versity of Lapland, Rovaniemi. Her doctoral thesis on art ‘Women on their Own: Single Female Photographers of Rovaniemi at the Beginning of the 1900s’ is multidisciplinary and interdisciplin- ary. She has developed a special method of historiography that utilizes expressions of art – historical documentaries and photo- graphic exhibitions. She has published several articles on the topic of microhistorical study of female photographers. Her interdiscip- linary approach has its background in her previous profession as a photographer. Ritva Hapuli (PhD) is docent in Cultural History. She acted as the su- pervisor in the project A Pen of One’s Own – Cultural History of Women’s Writing, 1880-1950, funded by e Finnish Academy, 2001-2005. e project concentrated on the spiritual and material conditions of women writers, concerning their private and pub- lished materials. Her own studies deal with Finnish female travel writers and theirs texts: Ulkomailla (Abroad. e World between the two World Wars Seen by the Finnish Female Travellers, 2003) and Matkalla kotona (Study on the Writer and Translator Kyllikki Villa’s Travel Diaries, 2008). Her most resent research interests focus on questions what kind of textual strategies (travel) writers use to represent their presence and roles as eyewitnesses even at the most terrible actions against other people. What are ethical consequences of these descriptions; or are there any? ix Bruce Johnson formerly a Professor in English, is now Adjunct Professor, Contemporary Music Studies, Macquarie University Sydney; Hon- orary Professor, Music, University of Glasgow; Visiting Professor, Cultural History, University of Turku. His current research lies in acoustic cultural history and the role of sound in the emergence of modernity. A jazz musician, broadcaster, record producer and arts policy advisor, he was prime mover in the establishment of the Australian Jazz Archive, and is co-founder of the International Institute for Popular Culture based in Turku. His publications include e Oxford Companion to Australian Jazz, and most recently (with Martin Cloonan) Dark Side of the Tune: Popular Music and Violence (2008), and an edited collection Earogenous Zones: Sound, Sexuality and Cinema (2010). Marjo Kaartinen (Ph.D.) is professor of cultural history at the Univer- sity of Turku. She has published especially on English early modern cultural history. She has won an award for her work against racism, and was the Scholar of the Year in Finland in 2006. Her books include Religious Life and English Culture in the Reformation (Pal- grave 2002). She has also written on women’s history, and racism in Finland. Her current projects include the history of childhood and emotions, friendship, and the history of the body on which her monograph Cancer in the Breast. e Cultural History of an Eighteenth-Century Illness will soon be published. Kari Kallioniemi (PhD) is docent of cultural history and lecturer in Cultural History, University of Turku. He has specialised on the history of popular culture, and is currently writing a book on the history of stardom. Kimi Kärki (Phil. Lic.) is the coordinator of Turku Institute for Ad- vanced Studies. He also coordinates European master’s programme European Heritage, Digital Media and the Information Society, which aims at building new bridges between cultural content, his- torical heritage and information technology. He is also a member of Academy of Finland project e Starnet: Changing Discourses of Popular Music Stardom, funded 2005—2008. is project goes x on as a research group within the International Institute for Popular Culture, http://iipc.utu./. His PhD work-in-progress is about the stadium rock stage design, stardom and aesthetics. During 2006 he spent six months as a Research Fellow in Institute of Popular Music, University of Liverpool, UK. He has written articles and edited several books on cultural history, popular music studies, and cultural integration, and is the editor of IIPC Online Series. He is preparing his PhD-dissertation in the production and commerce of pottery in the area of Roman Etruria during the rst centuries CE. His research interest include GIS and quantitative methods in cultural history, practices of trade and commerce, and economic activities in general. Maarit Leskelä-Kärki (PhD) works at the moment as a post-doctoral re- searcher at Turku Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Turku. She is a cultural historian, and her thesis in 2006 dealt with the literary lives of three Krohn sisters. Her main research areas focus on the history of women’s writing, gender history, autobiographical sources and methodological questions concerning life-writing re- search. Currently, she works with women’s biographical tradition in Finland between 1890 and 1980.

The methodology involves qualitative perusal of literary handbooks from 1915 to 1999. The author Fredrika Runeberg is taken as a window, in that I have examined if and how she is described in the selected handbooks. The main purpose has been to see if subjectivity in disparaging terms and condemnation of authorship have become more evident during the years under consideration. I have related the twelve selected handbooks to Hallberg´s five methods for literary historiography. This has been done to see if the degree of explicit subjectivity correlates to the method chosen. Professor of Literature Gunnar Hansson states that explicit subjectivity has become more extreme with increased space given descriptions in Swedish literary handbooks during recent years. The authors of the handbooks present their judgements as ”objective” and generalized facts. Fredrika Runeberg is mentioned in eleven of the twelve selected literary handbooks. She is mainly portrayed in relationship to her husband, the national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. In handbooks from the 1980s and onward the sociological method dominates. This means that interest in the social situation pertaining to Fredrika Runeberg´s authorship is shown by the increased space given to her presentation.

    As if Alive before Us: The Pleasures of Verisimilitude in Biographical Fiction Films Anneli Lehtisalo (University of Tampere) Introduction The biopic, or biographical fiction film, is characterised by the real or historical per- son as a protagonist (Custen 5; Taylor 22; Bingham, Whose Lives 8). Despite the acknowledged potential for artistic freedom in fiction film, this generic feature— the reference to the real world—informs the genre. Film-makers, reviewers and film scholars repeatedly ask, how truthful or verisimilar a portrayal, an actor or a performance is or how well a biographical film depicts a historical story. Tradition- ally, film-makers have defined “the degree of truth” of a film at its opening (Custen 51). A title card or a voice-over might assert that the film follows known facts. The declaration can serve as a disclaimer, where the audience is informed that a film is only inspired by real events or the story is only partly factual. Thus, it is possible to specify a biopic as fictional. In any case, some definition is expected. Contempo- rary newspaper criticism commonly estimates the truthfulness and verisimilitude of a film. If a film portrays a famous or respected public figure, the authenticity of the depiction will almost inevitable be debated. In addition, the truthfulness and verisimilitude of biopics are constantly discussed in scholarly criticism. George F. Custen, in his seminal book Bio/Pics: How Hollywood Constructed Public His- tory, devotes a whole chapter to the discussion of the relationship between a real person and a protagonist in a film (110–47). His aim is to illustrate how certain cir- cumstances of the film industry shaped the biopics of the studio era.

(HaF, 210) He saw, with a nameless feeling that he had never before experienced, this girl from a faraway and forgotten land; he had hardly surmised that even here love and beauty could wield their power over the human heart. In the passage above Scottish Jacob Keith, a commander in the Russian Army during the war 1741−1743 between Russia and Sweden (Finland), has met a young Finnish lady by the name of Eva Merthen for the first time. The story of the two lovers is told in the first Finnish historical novel,Hertiginnan af Finland (“The Duchess of Finland”, 1850=HaF), alongside the events of the war and political history. The passage dem- onstrates a keen interest in depicting Jacob’s mind, his inner feelings and thoughts as he suddenly falls in love. It uses the narrative mode of free indirect discourse (=FID), which carries traces of the discourse both of the character and the third person narrator as it depicts a character’s thoughts or speech. As Brian McHale (2005, 189) concisely defines it, “FID is ‘indirect’ because it conforms in person and tense to the template of indirect discourse, but ‘free’ because it is not subordinated grammatically to a verb of saying or thinking.” The proximity to a character’s free discourse is marked by, for instance, the use of idiomatic language and deictic adverbs pointing to the character’s own here and now (McHale 1978, 264−273).

    Emotional and Social Ties in the Construction of Nationalism: A Group Biographical Approach to the Tengström Family in nineteenth-century Finland REETTA EIRANEN Tampere University Introduction Nations and nationalisms have typically been understood and approached in the framework of public sphere. The context of the private sphere has been regarded as apolitical, and hence irrelevant. This has contributed to an emphasis on male actors, who have been associated with the public, and to the exclusion of women, who have been connected with the private. Consequently, in many national histories, men are treated as actors, whereas women represent the nation’s tradition in a metaphorical and symbolic role. More often than not, conventional national historiography fails to take gender into account or to incorporate women’s experiences and activities. The ‘Emancipated Ladies’ of America in the Travel Writing of Fredrika Bremer and Alexandra Gripenberg1 By Sirpa Salenius2 Abstract The Swedish novelist Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865) and the Finnish Baroness Alexandra Gripenberg (1857-1913), both active women’s rights advocates who toured in the United States in the 1850s and 1880s, respectively, used their travel writing as a powerful medium in promoting their ideological agendas. They articulated their gender politics through presenting American women as pioneers, leaders in women’s suffrage and models of female emancipation. Women’s activism in America was perceptible not only in the formally organized women’s rights movement but also in various reform movements (abolitionism, temperance, and labor movements) that contributed to women’s suffrage on a worldwide scale.

Platsen var arkeologiskt utforskad på 1800-talet av professor Sven Gabriel Elmgren (1817–1897). Fil.dr Reinhold Hausen (1850–1942) tog upp hans arbete och grävde ut området på 1870-talet. Samtidigt etablerades Bir- gittaminnena i Sverige som kulturarv. Hausen publicerade sin utgrävning år 1922 som kom att utgöra en kontakt med följande generation av aktörer på platsen via direktör Amos Anderson (1878–1961), i samarbete med lektor Julius Finnberg (1877–1955) och arkeologen Juhani Rinne (1872–1950). De reste kommemorativa monument m.m. på platsen i Nådendal och skapade sålunda ett minneslandskap där. För dem representerade platsen den goda hembygden, som ingick i en västorienterad syn på Fin- lands historia. Such nationalist approaches may, however, lead to a fragmented view of history. We should remember that many current European nation states have fairly short histories, and, even old kingdoms, such as Sweden, have changed shape several times. During the 17th and 18th century, the Swedish Empire included Finland, Estonia, Livonia, Ingria, Pomerania, Wismar and Bremen/Verden, and the previously Danish areas in the south and northwest. Later, Sweden even had small colonies in Africa and the Caribbean. The empire, however, began to disintegrate during the Great Nordic War. During the 18th century Finland, Estonia and Livonia belonged to the Russian Empire. My purpose is to provide an overview of the development of the press in the Swedish Empire and the 19th century Finland, Estonia and Livonia, and discuss limitations of national perspectives.
