REQUIEM ALL

‘This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’ (John 6:40)

Welcome to St James’s Church

ALL Souls’ falls on 2nd November, the day after All , and near the more recent of Remembrance Sunday. This makes November a time of gathering and giving thanks as we remember those that the Church calls saints and our own departed family and friends.

At All Souls’, we give thanks for those we have known and loved who have died, praying that they may have peace and rest in God’s nearer presence. There is no way that we can ever forget those who have gone before us, and all of us have our own bereavements that make us who we are, and which we carry with us throughout our lives.

Today is an opportunity to affirm our faith in the Risen Christ who as Paul says is the ‘first fruits of those who have fallen asleep’ (1 Cor. 15.20). It is why the stands among us as it does at a , to proclaim the even in the face of . It is with this hope in our hearts that we keep this solemn and beautiful day, praying for those whom we love but see no longer.

Our prayers for the departed take place in the context of the Mass, and it is at the heart of the Eucharistic Prayer which recalls Christ’s saving passion, death and resurrection, that the names of the dead are read. In this way we express that our belonging to one another in Christ as one on earth and transcends death, united in prayer with those who have gone before us and now live with the risen Christ in glory. The 20th century Anglican theologian Austin Farrer wrote:

‘May they and may light perpetual shine upon them - those millions among whom our friends are lost, those millions for whom we cannot choose but pray; because prayer is a sharing in the love of the heart of God, and the love of God is earnestly set towards the of his spiritual creatures.’

The Mass setting tonight is that of Gabriel Fauré, kindly sung by members of Northwood Choral Society.

GREETING

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The President introduces the Mass.

PENITENTIAL RITE

We know that our old self was crucified with Christ so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. Let us therefore confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Kneel

Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned again you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done. Through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault, we have wounded your love, and marred your image in us, we are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins; for the sake of your Son, Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past, and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen

3

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE

Let us pray for the peace and well-being of the whole Church.

Silence is kept.

Everlasting God, our maker and redeemer, grant us, with all the faithful departed, the sure benefits of your Son’s saving passion and glorious resurrection, that, in the last day, when you gather up all things in Christ, we may with them enjoy the fullness of your promises; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

Sit for the FIRST READING Romans 5.5-11

And hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person— though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John Glory to you, O Lord

Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 5

Stand for THE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will with have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. † Amen.

THE PEACE

Jesus says: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

The peace of the risen Lord be always with you and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

PREPARATION OF THE TABLE

Look upon us in mercy not in judgement; draw us from hatred to love; make the frailty of our praise a dwelling place for your glory. All Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

7

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth, giver of life, and conqueror of death. By his death on the cross, your Son Jesus Christ offered the one true sacrifice for sin, breaking the power of evil and putting death to flight.

Through his resurrection from the dead you have given us new birth into a living hope, into an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.

The joy of resurrection fills the universe, and so we join with angels and archangels, with all your faithful people, evermore praising you and singing:

Sanctus, , Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. in excelsis.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

8

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus: dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life: Lord Jesus, come in glory.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

Remember your servants whom you have called from this world to yourself: [the names of the departed are read here] Grant that they who were united with your Son in a death like his, may also be one with him in his Resurrection.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom, all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint James, St Paul, and all the holy Angels and Saints, may praise and glory you forever, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

9

by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the . Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
