Biographical/Historical Note

The collection consists of financial records of Wilmington Station, Confederate States Navy, kept by Charles Lucian Jones. A second cousin of Robert E. Lee, Jones served as the chief station paymaster for the Savannah Squadron from 1861 to 1863. He was promoted to assistant paymaster of the Confederate States Navy in 1863. He was paymaster first on the CSS North Carolina, then on the CSS Tallahassee; also for Batteries Buchanan, Campbell, and Meares.

Wilmington Station, located in North Carolina, served as an important Confederate port, and was the CSA's last open Atlantic port, captured by the Union army February 22, 1865.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains vouchers, invoices, returns and accounts of provisions, medical supplies, clothing, contingents, small stores, salaries, and submarine defense. Included are some letters, orders, requisitions, and receipts. Some of these records pertain to vessels other than the CSS North Carolina and CSS Tallahassee. Three publications of the Confederate States of America Navy (Confederate imprints of which one is a unique copy) are also in the collection.

The records were arranged by Work Projects Administration (W.P.A.) workers in the 1930s, probably in the original order which would account for the package designation. A card file index, also prepared by W.P. A. workers, is also included in the collection. It consists of an alphabetical list of names with service records on each card, alphabetical list of transfers from Confederate States of America Army to the Navy, lists of vessels, merchants, survivors, etc.
