The captain had a private state room, and higher ranking officers had small cabins, while lower ranks only had individual lockers. -

by Richard c. Brown How did the Union fight-and win-the Civil War? Experts agree that it took a plentiful supply of the Four M's: Men, Money, Material, and Morale. Erie County, New York, played a part in the victory by contributing its share of the 4 M's to the Union cause. The Census of 1860 showed Erie County to have a population of 141,971. Three-fifths of these people lived in the rapidly growing city of Buffalo, where 81,129 persons resided. Amherst had the largest popula- tion of any town in Erie County, 5,084. It was one of only three towns that exceededthree thousand in population, the other two being Clarence and Newstead. Traveling by railroad on his way to his inauguration in Washington, newly-elected President Abraham Lincoln arrived in Buffalo on the afternoon of Saturday, February 16, 1861.After an enthusiastic reception at the railroad station, he and his family were taken to the American Hotel. There they remained overnight. On Saturday afternoon, President-elect Lincoln made a brief and cautious speech to a crowd assembled on the street underneath a balcony of the American Hotel. In the evening he and Mrs. Lincoln greeted hundreds of men and women at receptions held in their honor. The next day they went to church with ex-President Millard Fillmore, Erie County's most distinguished resident. Sunday night the Lincolns con- tinued on their journey. Only a little more than a month after the new President was inaugurated, Confederate guns fired on Fort Sumter. -

Yonge Library of Florida History, Special Collections, George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida. Diaries and family collections are stored by the name of the major creator/writer. The 1863 Diary of William H. Carroll, Mess No. 2, Company D, 24Th Indiana Volunteers
The 1863 Diary of William H. Carroll, Mess No. 2, Company D, 24th Indiana Volunteers illiam H. Carroll came from a family of farmers. His father Dixon and Wmother Luticia moved with their family from North Carolina (vari- ously, in the late 1820s or early 1830s) and settled on land in Daviess County, Indiana. Carroll (born in 1834 or 1835, depending on the source) grew up on the family farm with his five brothers. When war came, five of the six brothers fought for the Union: William and John in Company D of the 24th Indiana; Robert, Nathaniel, and Dixon in Company G of the 42nd Indiana.1 William was mustered into the 24th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment on July 2, 1861. He fought at Shiloh; was wounded at Champion Hill and remained with his regiment through the siege of Vicksburg; reen- listed on December 31, 1863, in Louisiana; and fought almost until the end of the war, mustering out due to multiple disabilities on May 29, 1865. Porras* I. INTRODUCTION hroughout history, and across the globe, peoples and nations have Tencountered and entered into relationship with one another. While keeping in mind the dangers of oversimplification, it could nevertheless be argued that despite their variety, international relations fall mostly into either of two familiar types: The first takes the form of war or con- quest, while the second pertains to commerce or international trade.1 It is evident that these two categories are not mutually exclusive; war and trade have often gone hand in hand. -

The Latest Chapter of the American Law of Prize and Capture
THE LATEST CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN LAW OF PRIZE AND CAPTURE. With the distribution of a small prize fund in the case of Charles H. Davis, Captain, U. S. N., et al. v. The Paz, Ventura and other vessels and properry, under a decree of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, entered April 24, 1905, the law of naval prize in the United States became a purely historical and academic subject. That decree was the last to be entered in regard to property captured by the American naval forces in the Spanish war, and Section 13 of the Act of March 3, 1899,' had repealed "all provisions of law authorizing the distribu- tion among captors of the whole or any portion of the pro- ceeds of vessels, or any property hereafter captured, con- demned as prize, or providing for the payment of bounty for the sinking or destruction of vessels of the enemy hereafter occurring in time of war." Hereafter, in what- ever wars the United States may be engaged, the property of the enemy's government and of its citizens may be subject to capture, but the captors will have no personal interest in such capture as long as the law remains as it is to-day. Theoretically speaking, of course, Congress may at any time restore the old prize system, but such action on its part is most improbable. With the advance of civilization, war has gradually been losing its predatory character, and the abolition of prize rights is but one of many steps in that advance. -

Abstract This thesis sought to investigate why the British retained their policy of neutrality throughout the American Civil War, 1861-65, and whether the lack of intervention suggested British apathy towards the conflict. It discovered that British intervention was possible in a number of instances, such as the Trent Affair of 1861, but deliberately obstructed Federal diplomacy, such as the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. This thesis suggests that the British public lacked substantial and sustained support for intervention. Some studies have suggested that the Union Blockade of Southern ports may have tempted British intervention. This thesis demonstrates how the British sought and implemented replacement cotton to support the British textile industry. This study also demonstrates that, by the outbreak of the Civil War, British society lacked substantial support for foreign abolitionists’’ campaigns, thus making American slavery a poorly supported reason for intervention. -

Prouty* In the early days of the Civil War, Florida felt little effect of the conflict waging to the north, but this soon changed. On April 16, 1861, just six days after the surrender of Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a naval blockade of the Confederacy. The intent was not- to invade, but rather to hold key positions along the coast, break up supply routes and generally disrupt the Confederate economy. The Union blockade was at first ridiculed by the South, but by the end of 1861 the acquisition of 200 ships by the U.S. -

“MANY OF THEM ARE AMONG MY BEST MEN”: THE UNITED STATES NAVY LOOKS AT ITS AFRICAN AMERICAN CREWMEN, 1755-1955 by MICHAEL SHAWN DAVIS B.A., Brooklyn College, City University of New York, 1991 M.A., Kansas State University, 1995 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2011 Abstract Historians of the integration of the American military and African American military participation have argued that the post-World War II period was the critical period for the integration of the U.S. Navy. This dissertation argues that World War II was “the” critical period for the integration of the Navy because, in addition to forcing the Navy to change its racial policy, the war altered the Navy’s attitudes towards its African American personnel. African Americans have a long history in the U.S. Navy. In the period between the French and Indian War and the Civil War, African Americans served in the Navy because whites would not. This is especially true of the peacetime service, where conditions, pay, and discipline dissuaded most whites from enlisting. During the Civil War, a substantial number of escaped slaves and other African Americans served. Reliance on racially integrated crews survived beyond the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, only to succumb to the principle of “separate but equal,” validated by the Supreme Court in the Plessy case (1896). As racial segregation took hold and the era of “Jim Crow” began, the Navy separated the races, a task completed by the time America entered World War I.
