University of Tennessee-Martin Quotes Head Coach Donley Canary

On early run in the first “I think it really helped us. It did put us up early as far as; loosening us up and everybody playing. JB (Jenny Bain) started us off early with a base hit and our senior Savannah (Roberts) gave us some confidence.”

On managing score “I am happy that we competed. This year we have played Georgia Tech, SIU-Carbondale which were ranked 24th in the nation, and SIU-Evansville. We competed against all of them and beat them a couple games. We competed against all of them. We just wanted our kids to play hard and they did play hard. It was unfortunate after the rain delay that we made a mistake in the outfield, gave them two more runs. It was 7-3 and we could have brought the tying run to the plate and load the bases up. The kids have played hard all year and never quit not matter what. We just wanted to compete against them. They (Arizona) are a great ball team and you cannot give them with four and five outs.

On Arizona’s home run history “We talked to Kara (Harper) about keeping the ball in the ball park. We were going with a lot of change ups, keeping the ball in stride. The harder you throw it the harder they hit it. When (Stacie) Chambers hit the ball over the scoreboard it was a screwball away from her and she is a left-handed hitter. It seemed like there were a lot of doubles and we were chasing the ball all over the fence a lot. They swing the bats extremely well. They are going to compete nationally. If they pitch and play defense well, they are going to compete because they can swing the bat so well.”

On Arizona’s record home run “One of the keys to the game was keeping the ball in the ballpark. They only hit it out of the ballpark once on us. They are a great hitting team.”

On UT-Martin’s first NCAA appearance “It was a great experience. We have a young team. Next year we have three seniors and five juniors that have played for me. Jenny Bain was the Freshman of the Year in our conference and our pitching is solid. The hardest thing for us was to get here out of our conference. We just wanted to play hard.”

On Kara Harper Kara was 20-7 she deserved the opportunity to pitch here today. She pitched a good ball game against a great hitting team. She pitched a fine ball game the entire way through. She gave us an opportunity to win.”

Jenny Bain, Freshman UT

On UT Martin’s energy “It felt like we were confident right from the get go. We did not have anything to lose in this game. We were all ready to play and compete in it. It was really excited when I lead off with a hit. We were really pumped up for the first inning, I just wish we could have kept going and we kind of did. We played really well.”

University of Arizona Head Coach Mike Candrea

Opening Statement “At this time of the year a win is a win. There is no time to think too much about it. I do not think we played exceptionally well, but I am not going to complain about it. Our mindset at this time of year is one game at a time. No matter how you play as long as you end up on the right side of the score, you have to be happy, move forward and not think that much about it.”

I have really high expectations, I think. I am always trying to play the perfect game. There are moments this year where we have come close to that. It is little things like that in a close game, against a good team. It may end up costing you. We try to away from those types of situations. I felt that we got ourselves in a few of those today and we did not fare well. We swung that bat and put some runs on the board. That has been the key for us this entire year. I have a lot of faith in our pitchers to do what it takes to win. We may give up a run or two, but the bottom line is that we focus and we can get it done. I thought we played a little tight today. I thought we were a little bit tighter than we normally are and mentioned it after the game. I think we play better when we’re loose.”

On Jill Malina “She did a great job. She is one of those kids that comes out and practices hard everyday. She has been waiting for an opportunity and I felt very comfortable putting her in. I knew that she was definitely going to give us everything that she had. She laid down a good bunt. She played a decent right field. I was excited for her.”

On the home run record “I do not think they gave a national championship on home runs. It is games that you win. This time of year it is great pitching, great defense and getting a timely hit. That is what we have to get in the mindset to do. It is nice to know that are able to break a game open. I told our kids I felt like all the time we can have a big inning; it is just a matter of good quality at-bats. I thought we had some at-bats today that were not real quality. For whatever reason I am not going to blame it all our on hitters, I will not blame it on anyone else in our circle.”

On facing Louisville and Purdue “Louisville and Purdue have had a great year, but we know this is going to be a tough road and it should be. They are both very good teams. Louisville has had a great year and I am anxious to get a chance to see them. This is going to be a tough one and it should be at this stage. If NCAA does there job there are not going to be any games that you are going to curse through. I do not think anyone who walks into a regional game today expects that. There is a lot of parity across the country. People all over the country are putting a lot of money into this sport and it shows . There are a lot of good teams in this field. I think it is a very wide open field.”

Stacie Chambers, Junior Catcher

On her record home run “I just try to make contact. It felt good to hit it. Honestly, I do not think we pay very much attention to that. We just go out there and try to hit the ball hard. That is what we are supposed to do when we get in the box.”

On managing the game “For the pitchers I just try to go out there and talk to them. I give them a little breather and tell them to relax. They throw everyday and they know how to do it. That is all I can do for them. As far as everybody else talking with them and telling them to keep their heads in the game, give it their all.”

Jennifer Martinez, Senior Pitcher

On redshirt experience “A year ago I was redshirting and I had to watch things from the dugout. It was tough red shirting. It definitely helped to understand what is expected of me and to know the hard work it takes to make it at this level.”

On in-game change up “I was one of the players who was pressing today. I was having a hard time making adjustments on certain pitches, but I am really happy that my off speed (pitch) was working. I was definitely one of the tight players today. I need to go out tomorrow and be a lot more relaxed.”

Laine Roth, Senior 1B

On pinch hitting “Coach and I talked about it and my role now is to become a pinch hitter. So, they needed me to come out there. All I need is one swing and hopefully I will hit it.”
