PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICAL EVALUATION FORM (PPE) The IHSAA Pre-participation Physical Evaluation (PPE) is the first and most impo1tant step in providing for the well-being ofIndiana's high school athletes. The form is designed to identify risk factors prior to athletic participation by way ofa thorough medical history and physical examination. The IHSAA, under the guidance ofthe Indiana State Medical Association's Com mittee on Sports Medicine, requires that the PPE Fo1m be signed by a physician (MD or DO) holding an unlimited license to practice medicine, a nurse practitioner (NP) or a physician assis tant (PA). In order to assure that these rigorous standards are met, both organizations endorse the following requirements for completion of the PPE Form: I. The most current version of the IHSAA PPE Form must be used and may not be altered or modified in any way. (available for download at www.ihsaa.org<http://wwwJhsaa.org/>) 2. The PPE Form must be signed by a physician (MD or DO) holding an unlimited license to practice medicine, a nurse practitioner (NP) or a physician assistant (PA) only after the m~dical histo1y is reviewed, the examination performed, and th~ PP~.Form completed in ' , :· ... its entirety. Straddling the Great Divide: Intersections in Gameplay and Narrative in Contemporary Japanese Role-Playing Games by Sarah Michelle Helland A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Okanagan) August 2013 © Sarah Michelle Helland, 2013 Abstract This project explores questions concerning whether digital games should be studied in terms of narrative, ludology (gameplay), or both. The project begins by discussing the current state of Game Studies and the ‘narrative vs. ludology’ debate. The author provides a brief outline of contemporary theory surrounding the debate before asserting her central thesis that both gameplay and narrative are integral components of player experience and that both must be acknowledged. The author then outlines her research methodology, which includes textual analyses of two popular Japanese role-playing games. By examining the ways in which morality is depicted in both games, the author posits that the functions of both gameplay and narrative in constructing player experience will become evident. A brief discussion of what constitutes a role-playing game is provided, followed by a discussion of the ways in which digital role-playing games are cultural products. The author includes an analysis of narrative conventions in contemporary Japanese role-playing games in order to resist Eurocentric readings of the two games to be examined. The textual analyses begin with an examination of gameplay in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. An analysis of the game’s narrative elements such as plot, characterization, and theme follows. Through this analysis, the author observes a marked focus upon collectivist morality, which is clearly observable in both the gameplay and narrative elements of the game. -

Surgidos há quase 50 anos, numa tentativa de transformar os computadores em algo divertido, os videogames foram ganhando complexidade com os sucessivos avanços tecnológicos até se transformarem em um dos objetos culturais mais instigantes da virada do século 20 para o 21. Presentes na vida dos jovens de praticamente todas as sociedades nas últimas duas décadas, os games passaram a influenciar e a serem influenciados por outras linguagens estéticas da cultura popular, como o cinema, a música, os desenhos animados e as histórias em quadrinhos. -

Resum 516 El panorama dels videojocs comercials de qualsevol consola es pot dividir en diferents categories. Axí hem vist que a la Nintendo DS hi ha: jocs de taula, videojocs musicals (incloses aplicacions de música), arcade i acció, els de trets (anomenats també shooter), de rol, aventures, destacant-ne l’aventura gràfica i conversacional, educatius i minivideojocs o microjocs. Després d’haver vist els videojocs que hi ha al mercat per a la Nintendo DS, ens hem centrat en els videojocs no comercials. Així, hem vist una interacció entre la indústria del manga, la indústria de l’anime i la indústria dels videojocs. Videojocs basats en sèries de manga o anime, manga o anime basats en videojocs i videojocs que integren elements de manga o anime a la seua estètica o estructura narrativa. Finalment, hem estudiat els aspectes concrets i particulars de l'actual producció no comercial a Espanya per a la Nintendo DS. Destaquem d’aquest panorama el videojoc Raruto DS, no tant per les seues qualitats intrínseques sinó perquè és una mostra palesa de què és un videojoc no comercial de la Nintendo DS basat en un manga no comercial. -
