The idea is to put forward a paralel code, in LRC of language and LOR quest, to the focus on separate wide swaths of straight cognations. At present the only representatives of the southern Samoyeds are the Selkups, who live in the Tomsk and Tyumen regions. According to the census of 1989 the total number of Selkups is 3,612 people, of which about 2,200 live in the Tomsk region. The language situation is different for the two Selkup groups: It is disturbing among the northern Selkups (Tyumen region) and disastrous among the southern Selkups (Tomsk region). This report will consider cer- tain measures that are being developed to mitigate the process of assimilation among the southern Selkups. Several factors have tended to accelerate the extinction of the Selkup lan- guage and culture in southern (Tomsk) dialect areas: (1) Administrative disconnection. At present the level of ethnic consolida- tion among the Selkups is not high. Unlike the earlier Tym national district, they do not represent an autonomous national entity. (2) The destruction of the traditional life-style, including the disappearance of villages and increasing urbanization among the younger generation. Con- tributing to this situation, there is also a low level of national self-conscious- ness. (3) The absence, for the Selkups, of a written language or educational and methodological literature. 2. Tomsk scientists have been trying to help Selkups to overcome this latter negative factor. -

Chapter 12 Structural case and objective conjugation in Northern Samoyedic Melani Wratil University of Düsseldorf In Samoyedic syntactic objects and, to a much lesser extent, syntactic subjects are morpho- logically marked in some way if they pragmatically deviate from the prototypical grammat- ical relation they represent. The present paper focuses on the Northern Samoyedic branch in this respect, where morphological case and possessive marking, the selection of conju- gational patterns and even argument drop is employed to a variable extent in order toas- sign grammatical functions and to distinguish between the involved arguments and their semantic and pragmatic characteristics. It provides evidence for the fact that the synchronic variation in the manifestation and application of these means in the Northern Samoyedic languages Nganasan, Tundra Nenets and Forest Enets can be explained by the interrelation between the individual developmental paths that specific nominal, pronominal and verbal markers have followed. Whereas in Nganasan the morphophonemic change of number and accusative case markers in conjunction with possessive morphemes and moreover the gram- maticalization of the latter to definiteness markers has resulted in a system of differential object marking (DOM) that exclusively applies to nouns, in Tundra Nenets and Forest Enets DOM is implemented by the verbal morphology. This variation in differential marking is attributable to the fact that the agreement suffixes of the objective conjugation inTundra Nenets and in Forest Enets – but not in Nganasan – have adopted substantial functional features of ambiguous object agreement suffixes and at the same time of topic markers. An instance of differential subject marking (DSM) only exists in Nganasan. -

Verbs of Motion in the Modern Turkish Language (Vertical Direction) The advancement of technology and scientific knowledge has generated the need to describe the new types of movement in above ground space by linguistic means. In contrast to the horizontal direction, movement in the vertical direction is not differentiated by the manner of the movement. The direct and secondary meanings of the verbs çık-, in-, kalk-, çök-, düş-, havalan-, yüksel-, alçal- are reviewed in the article. This group of verbs is characterized by active development of semantics and subjective compatibility, as well as by the absence of strict semantic boundaries between verbs and by a complex system of synonyms and antonyms. Analysis of archival audio materials on the Togur sub-dialect of the Middle-Ob dialect of Selkup In the article we discuss some evidence for the existence of long vowels in Proto-Selkup. These vowels are preserved in the Selkup dialects. We have analyzed the audio recordings of the Togur dialect of the middle Ob subdialect of the Selkup language, which were collected in phonetic laboratory in Novosibirsk in 1973 from Fiona Tobolzhina (born in 1911), using Praat phonetic software. The resulting glossary is currently available online at http://lingvodoc.ispras.ru. We have found that minimal pairs for long and short vowels exist in this dialect.
