OBITUARY REFERENCE MR. CHAIRMAN: I refer with profound sorrow to the passing away of Kishan Maharaj, an eminent Maestro, on 4th May, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Born in in September 1923, Pandit Kishan Maharaj began playing tabla when he was still a child. Initially, he learned the art from his father, Pandit Hari Maharaj, and, thereafter, he came under the tutelage of his uncle, Pandit Kanthe Maharaj, one of the great masters of his time, from whom he started taking his lessons further. Pandit Kishan Maharaj had the ability to play cross- rhythms, particularly, in tihai patterns which made him one of the most popular and cherished tabla players of his time. Pandit Kishan Maharaj had the distinction of playing any kind of accompaniment, be it with the , , , Dhamar or dance. His enthralling solo concerts and jugalbandis with accomplished artistes would be long remembered.

CHAIRMAN: Hon’ble Members, you are aware that in Myanmar more than 10,000 people are reported to have been killed in a cyclone that struck the Irrawady delta during the last weekend. I am sure that the whole House will join me in expressing its sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families. (One minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased.) ______
