Typically by Christmas Day, retailers are confident they’ll make their numbers. It’s not quite the case this year, based on how retail sales have played out thus far. Store executives and analysts contacted Monday Shopper and Tuesday said there were two peak periods — Black Friday weekend and last weekend, and an un- usually prolonged shopping lull in between. In other Style words, it was feast or famine, and mostly the latter. ’Tis the season for procrastinating shoppers — famous models included. WWD recently snapped Carolyn Murphy picking up some last-minute gifts on Howard Street in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. For more stylish shoppers, see page 8. ® THEY ARE WEARING Retailers accelerated markdowns last week and will keep them going this week and throughout January. “The year is not over for us yet. We have to continue to stay focused,” said Edgar Huber, chief executive of- ficer of Lands’ End. He said Lands’ End will be driven through January by the usual end-of-season sales as well as new product arrivals, though he was positive about the state of his business. “We will bring in Q4 as we planned. Everyone was waiting for the last weekend. At least for us it worked. We doubled our numbers. We had a strong Thanksgiving, record-breaking cyber sales, then business was very soft until last weekend which was very, very strong.” Others were circumspect. “There’s so much at stake with post-Christmas. We’ll see,” said one retail ceo who requested anonymity. “There were two extra days of shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas but it just pushed the business later. Retailers became ner- vous,” and increased markdowns. “I suspect there is a lot of inventory out there and a lot of good things to buy on sale,” he added. “It’s time to rethink Christmas,” suggested Lou Amendola, executive vice president of merchandising for Brooks Brothers. “The whole holiday and what fam- ilies do and how they spend their money seems to be changing. It’s time for everyone to make adjustments.” He said retailers need to “evaluate the emphasis we put on the shopping period between Thanksgiving and Christmas and thinking that all our profits are made then. People today shop all year long on the Internet and don’t need to wait until Christmas anymore. They’re just not shopping like they used to.” James Fielding, ceo of Claire’s Stores Inc., said, “We had a terrific November, including Black Friday, and then we had some softness at the beginning of December and the last week has been really terrific,” though the calendar, with 34 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas compared to 32 last year, didn’t help PHOTO BY THOMAS IANNACCONE SEE PAGE 4 2 WWD WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2012 TJX Acquires Sierra Trading Post THE BRIEFING BOX “We will be able to build upon IN TODAY’S WWD By EVAN CLARK Carol this platform as we continue to de- Meyrowitz velop our e-commerce strategy,” OFF-PRICE GIANT The TJX Cos. she said. “Further, we are confi- Inc. is starting to flex its muscles dent that TJX can help grow the in the online world.

  • Fashion's Autumn/Winter 2014 Ad Campaigns | Financial Times
04/01/2020, 10:22 Page 1 of 1 Luxury goods Add to myFT Fashion’s autumn/winter 2014 ad campaigns A deconstruction of the industry’s ads for the season reveals a sombre economic mood Share Save David Hayes AUGUST 8 2014 Hemlines may once have been a cute way of monitoring the state of the economy – rather aptly, they are all over the place these days – but nothing gives a snapshot of global hard-currency health better than a flick through the September issues of the world’s glossiest fashion magazines. Landing on newsstands with a reassuringly weighty thud early this month, the current edition of US Vogue has more advertising than any other American fashion or lifestyle magazine, with a whopping 631 ad pages. Yet it is still down 4.5 per cent on last year’s Lady Gaga extravaganza of 665 pages – which in turn was down on the magazine’s peak of 727 pages of ads in 2007. The luxury sector may not have turned an economic corner – yet. And in fashion terms the mood is not exactly upbeat, either: think brown and black set against brutalist concrete architecture (Prada); corseted women hanging around in a drab hotel suite (Dior); and models trapped in a surrealist crazy golf course from hell, wearing equally disturbing knitwear (Kenzo). Yes, advertising matters, not only as a barometer of the spending trends of the fashion world, but also as a tone-setting exercise. The following images are how fashion should look this autumn/winter, straight from the designer’s eye, so take note.

  • Präsentation Des Kalenders 2020 “Looking for Juliet” Von Paolo Roversi in Verona

  • Organized Crime in Bulgaria: Markets and Trends
ORGANIZED CRIME IN BULGARIA: MARKETS AND TRENDS The present report builds upon various studies published by the Center for the Study of Democracy throughout the last decade which have focused on specific aspects of organized crime in Bulgaria (contraband, the drug market, tax fraud, human trafficking, arms proliferation, etc.), the systemic spread of corruption, and the linkages between the two. The report presents the latest trends and manifestations (or “market niches”) of syndicate crime and its particularly damaging effects. It goes further to offer a historical review of the facts and available expertise in the area, and to draw conclusions about the origin, characteristics and developmental features of organized criminality in Bulgaria in the context of the transition to democracy. This report attempts to present an authentic picture of organized crime in Bulgaria, by identifying its constitu- ent features and major trends. The research team has used information from all available sources, analyzing it through several, complementary methods. Collecting empirical data about clandestine and hidden markets is a hard task, which can sometimes put the researchers at risk. However, it cannot be dispensed with, particularly as the so called objective data (police and judicial crime statistics) provided by public bodies is often incomplete and sometimes manipulated. This paper also furthers expertise exchange through a public-private partnership. This publication has been produced with the financial assistance of the European Union.
