The thought persisted that I was experiencing only what had happened to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of others in the great city … I was sure that there must be many other young men who had come from farms and small villages to establish themselves in Chicago ... Why not bring them together? If others were longing for fellowship as I was, something would come of it.

Did You Know? The tradition of singing at Rotary club meetings began in 1905 with Rotarian Harry L. Ruggles, of the Rotary Club of Chicago. New Rotary clubs formed, and the practice of singing at club meetings caught on. Ruggles's company published an unofficial Book of Songs -- a collection of patriotic tunes, familiar standards, and Rotary songs (many penned by Rotarians) -- to help clubs make singing a regular part of their meetings. The first official edition of Ruggles's songbook, Songs for the Rotary Club , was published in 1920 and provided lyrics only. Editions with musical notation appeared in 1925. Songs for the Rotary Club: Words and Music is available from www.Shop.Rotary.org for $5.00 (Source: Rotary Global History Fellowship) Harry L. Ruggles

“Silvester Schiele, my most intimate Chicago Groundhog Day friend, and one of the three who first met with me, was made our first president, and has been a February 2nd constant member. Gustavus Loehr and Hiram Shorey were the other two but they failed to follow through. On the other hand Harry Ruggles, Charley Newton, and others who were quickly added to the group, with hearty zest joined in developing the project.”

- - Paul P. Harris, My Road to Rotary

"Just as Rotary itself can never keep its place unless it is constantly growing, so each individual Rotary Club cannot afford to stand still while the stream of life moves onward."

Update on School Construction in El Sauce, Nicaragua

…….The school has been under construction for the last four weeks. We have had 7 volunteers who have come from to help out. We had the Lupisella Family, a returning Enlace Project vol- unteer (Sophie) and her brother, and some Geneseo students. The Lupisella wrote a blog about their experience here, this is the link in case you want to share it: http://lupisellasinnicaragua.tumblr.com/

Community members and 4 masons have been the ones in charge of building the school. The four walls of the school and its sidewalks are up. This week they have started building the floor, we are planning to bring the tiles for the floor up next Monday, so that they can finish it next week. After that, the plan is to have the Mayor's Office take charge in building the roof, in that mean time we will start buying the supplies that will go in the school. We are planning to have the school finished by January 27th. We are planning to have an opening ceremony for the school on February 11th. The school year will start February 13…...

Rotary International 2012-13 Theme Announced

RI President-elect Sakuji Tanaka will ask Rotarians to build Peace Through Service in 2012-13.

Tanaka unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2012 International Assembly, a training event for incoming Rotary district governors.

"Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a realistic goal for Rotary," he said. "Peace is not something that can only be achieved Sakuji Tanaka through agreements, by governments, or through heroic struggles. It is some- thing that we can find and that we can achieve, every day and in many simple ways."

Peace has different meanings for different people, Tanaka said.

"No definition is right, and no definition is wrong," he said. "However we use the word, this is what peace means for us.

"No matter how we use, or understand the word, Rotary can help us to achieve it," he added.

Tanaka, a businessman from the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, shared how becoming a Rotarian broadened his understanding of the world. After joining the Rotary Club of Yashio, in 1975, he said, he began to realize that his life's purpose was not to make more money, but to be useful to other people.

"I realized that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could help to build peace," Tanaka said. (Source: Rotary International News, 16 January 2012)
